Letter from Father Pious to Father Benedict, on 21st August 1918
(In the evening of 5th August, while he was confessing young people, he was wounded by a man with a long tipped iron blade)
"... I cannot tell you what in this period of superlative martyrdom happened.
While I was hearing the boys’ confessions on the evening of the 5th [August] I was suddenly terrorized by the sight of a celestial person who presented himself to my mind’s eye. He had in his hand a sort of weapon like a very long sharp-pointed steel blade, which seemed to emit fire. At the very instant that I saw all this, I saw that person hurl the weapon into my soul with all his might. I cried out with difficulty and felt I was dying. I asked the boy to leave because I felt ill and no longer had the strength to continue.
This agony lasted uninterruptedly until the morning of the 7th. I cannot tell you how much I suffered during this period of anguish. Even my entrails were torn and ruptured by the weapon, and nothing was spared. From that day on I have been mortally wounded. I feel in the depths of my soul a wound that is always open and which causes me continual agony...".

"... I complained with the little angel who after a beautiful preaching added:" Thank Jesus, who has chosen you to follow Him closely on his way to the Calvary. Soul entrusted to my care by Jesus, I see with joy and emotion the behaviour of Jesus towards you. Do you believe that I could be so happy if I would not see you so shaken? As I wish your good I enjoy your condition more and more. Jesus allows these assaults of the devil, because he loves you so he wants that you are like Him in the anguish of the desert, the olive garden and the cross.
Fight, take away and refuse always any malicious insinuations and where your forces are unable, do not worry, beloved, I am close to you. "What devotion, my father! What have I ever done to deserve such exquisite love from my little angel? ...".

(Father Pius spurs Raffaelina to entrust her angel guardian)
"...Use to always think to it. Beside we have a celestial spirit that never abandons us, from cradle to grave, who guides and protects us as a friend, as a brother, and always consoles, especially in the saddest hours. You must know, Raffaelina that this good angel pray for you; offers all your good actions to God, your most holy and pure wishes. When you feel lonely and abandoned, do not complain of not having a friend to talk to: please, do not forget this invisible companion, always ready to listen, always ready to console. Oh, delicious intimacy! Oh, happy company...".
