The apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the three young shepherds of Fatima were prepared in advance by an angel who appeared three times and invited Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta to devote their time to prayer and penance.

First apparition in 1915
"One day we went eastwards in a propriety of my parents, called "Dam Vela", a land at the foot of the hill of which I have already talked before. Towards mid-morning it began raining, a drizzling rain little more than dew. Then we climbed along the side of the hill, followed by our sheep, and looked for a rock where we could repair. We had been plying for a while a wind came. It was strong enough to shake the trees and we were forced to turn our eyes up, surprised because the weather was good that day. Then we saw, over and above the trees, the same figure that I already mentioned, which was coming towards us. Jacinta and Francisco had never seen it and I had never told them about it. As it approached, we could better see its features. It looked like seemed a 14 or 15 year old boy, whiter than snow, which the sun made transparent as crystal. It was very beautiful. He came close and told us: "Do not be afraid, I am the angel of peace. Pray with me".
And, kneeling lowered his head to touch the ground and we had to repeat these words three times: "My God, I believe, worship, hope and love You! I beg forgiveness for those who do not believe, do not worship, do not hope and do not love You". Then he stood up and said: "Pray this way. Jesus and Mary’s hearts will answer your prayers. "These words were printed so deeply in our minds that we never forgot them.".
Second Apparition of the 1915
(The guardian angel of Portugal)
"One summer day, even if we had to stay at home and have a nap, we were playing among the wells owned by my parents at the bottom of the garden called" Arneiro. "Suddenly we saw the same picture, the angel appeared and told us; "What are you doing? Pray, pray a lot! Saints Hearts of Jesus and Mary have big mercy plans for you. Offer the Most prayers and sacrifices constantly." How could we make sacrifices?" I asked. "Offer God everything you can, a sacrifice, an act of reparation for the sins offending Him, and petitions for the conversion of sinners. In this way you will grant peace on your Country. I am its guardian angel, the angel of Portugal. But first of all accept and bear any suffering that the Lord will give you".
Third Apparition autumn 1916
"One day we went to graze our cattle in a land belonging to my parents, located on the side of the hill a little over “Valinhos”. It was an olive grove that we called "Préguerie" After eating something, we decided to go praying in the cave that was on the other side of the hill. As soon as we arrived we knelt with our face on the ground, and began to repeat Angel’s prayer. I do not know how many times we repeated it but suddenly we saw a light we had never seen before shining above us. We stood up to see what it was happening and we saw the angel again; He had a chalice in his hand with a host hanging over it. From the host drops of blood felt on the chalice. The angel left the chalice hanging in the air, knelt near us and asked us to repeat three times: "Very Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I worship You deeply. I am offering You the precious body, blood, soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is present in all tabernacles in the world, to repair all insults, sacrilege and indifference offending Him. And for the infinite merits of His very Blessed Heart and of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I ask You for the conversion of the poor sinners."
Then he stood up and took the chalice and the host in his hand. He gave all us the Holy Host and the blood in the chalice and then he said these words: "Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly insulted by ungrateful people. Repair their crimes and comfort your God." And, prostrating again, he repeated the same prayer further three times with us then went away".
