To forgive means to drop resentments, misunderstandings and accept mistakes aware or unaware that caused us much suffering. Forgive, it must be recalled, stabilizes blood pressure, reduces stress and makes normal heartbeat. And, in the minds brainwashed by hate, revenge, resentment, forgiveness gives serenity, removes a great burden, restores the autonomy and freedom much positive energy that transforms the quality of our living.
Although forgiveness is an act of humanity and generosity that makes you cancel any desire for revenge, punishment and leads, as we have seen, calm, positive emotions and health, it is not easy to take this on. There are many problems and obstacles that strongly hinder the path, for example: the person who hurt me should, for one, take a positive action on which I can engage forgiveness. It should, as well, to publicly acknowledge his mistake and repentance. It should provide guarantees in order not to fall back in action and back evil to hurt me. And then, how can you forgive if the memory persists and you cannot forget what happened?
A first consideration: sometimes we get hurt by those who are not aware of their actions, nor harm it produces.
Jesus teaches us: If you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Jesus emphasizes the absolute generosity of forgiveness and reconciliation, and puts them to the rite of atonement. As if to say, without your forgiveness ritual is in vain, you ask God for forgiveness but you do not want to grant it to your brother. The concept is clarified further by meditating on the parable of the unforgiving servant, the servant fell down and begged him: "Lord, have patience with me and I will pay you everything" ... And the master let the servant goes and forgave him the debt. Just out, the servant found a fellow-servant who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him by the throat and said, "Pay what you owe!". His companion fell down, pleading with him ... but he would not agree, he had him thrown into prison ... Then the master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all the debt because you begged. Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow servant, even as I had pity on you?" (Mt 18.26 to 33). The exhortation of the Savior is: forgive if you have anything against anyone, that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
We can receive forgiveness from God for our sins, to the extent that the grant to our brothers.
Moreover, even in civil society, no one is allowed to take the law itself, but must go to court, which, through the living laws, imposes a sentence. We must not seek personal revenge but we must ask her the question, and that she is a perfect judge, will know how and in what time to intervene.
Our forgiveness does not cancel the sin of those who acted with violence or bullying, it will have to respond in due time to the divine justice. Many believe that sin, even the most serious is amended by Divine Mercy, it should be remembered that the qualities of God are infinite and perfect and He alone will combine perfectly the Mercy with Justice so that they are both satisfied.
Do not look for revenge yourself beloved, but give place unto wrath. For it is written: "Vengeance is mine, I will repay," says the Lord.
