Matthew Edward Gonzalez (born June 4 1965), is an American politician, lawyer, and activist prominent in San Francisco politics and as a vice presidential candidate. Gonzalez was a member and president of San Francisco County's Board of Supervisors.

He was also one of the first Green Party candidates elected to public office in the Bay Area.

In 2003, Gonzalez ran for mayor of San Francisco but lost to in a close race to Democrat Gavin Newsom.

He was announced on February 28, 2008, as the running mate of presidential candidate Ralph Nader. In 1991, he began working as a trial lawyer at the Office of the Public Defender in San Francisco where he earned a reputation as a skilled trial lawyer. He represented and won eight out of nine life-in-prison cases (the ninth was later won at appeal) and was named "Lawyer of the Year" by the San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association in 2000.

Gonzalez switched to the Green Party in what he called "a political or moral epiphany ." Gonzalez was attending a rally at the offices of KRON-TV in San Francisco to protest the absence of Green Party senatoral candidate Medea Benjamin at a debate between Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat, and her Republican challenger Tom Campbell.

Gonzalez described his conversion to the San Francisco Bay Guardian:

"I couldn't help thinking of how most of my support in last year's district attorney's race came as a result of being allowed into televised debates with my better-known opponents and how that support has eventually led to my being the frontrunner in the District 5 supervisorial race. The more I thought about it, the more I knew I wasn't OK with it. I didn't want to be a member of a party that was urging the exclusion of a candidate solely on the grounds that the candidate didn't have enough support, when it's precisely television coverage that could win that candidate public acceptance. So if the Democratic Party is working so hard to squelch valuable debate, why should I remain a Democrat? I was already discouraged by Al Gore's pronouncements, during the presidential debates, in favor of the death penalty and his equivocation on gay marriage. As I reflected on this, I realized I had less in common with Feinstein's party than with Medea Benjamin's.".

Era anche uno dei primi candidati eletti del Green Party all'ufficio pubblico a Bay Area.

Nel 2003, Gonzalez si candidò come sindaco di San Francisco ma perse dopo una sfida serrata con il Democratico Gavin Newsom. E' stato scelto il 28 febbraio 2008, come il vice presidente del candidato presidenziale Ralph Nader. Nel 1991, lui iniziò a lavorare come avvocato all'ufficio della protezione pubblica di San Francisco in cui ha guadagnato una reputazione di avvocato esperto. Ha difeso e vinto otto su nove cause che prevedevano l'ergastolo (il nono è stato vinto successivamente in appello) ed è stato "avvocato dell'anno" per l'associazione degli avvocati "La Raza" di San Francisco nel 2000.

Gonzalez ha spiegato al partito verde quella che ha chiamato "un'epifania politica o morale." Gonzalez assistette a un comizio davanti alla sede degli uffici di KRON-TV a San Francisco per protestare contro l'assenza del candidato verde al senato Medea Benjamin a un dibattito fra il senatore democratico Dianne Feinstein, ed il Repubblicano Tom Campbell.

Gonzalez ha descritto la sua conversione al San Francisco Bay Guardian:

"Io vorrei far capire che il primo motivo del mio successo nella corsa alla carica di avvocato di distretto dell'anno scorso è stata la partecipazione ai dibattiti teletrasmessi con i miei avversari più famosi e che quel sostegno mi ha condotto a essere il favorito nella corsa alla carica di supervisore del distretto 5. A questo proposito io pensavo e sapevo che questo non andava BENE. Non volevo far parte di un partito che spingeva l'esclusione di un candidato soltanto perché esso non aveva abbastanza supporto, quando solo la copertura televisiva aiuta i candidati a conquistare il consenso pubblico. Quindi se il partito democratico lavora così duramente per infangare un dibattito importante, perché dovrei restare un democratico? Già ero stato scoraggiato dalle dichiarazioni di Al Gore (durante i dibattiti presidenziali) favorevoli alla pena di morte ed equivoche sull'unione fra gay. Così riflettei su questo e realizzai che avevo meno in comune con il partito della Feinstein che con quello di Medea Benjamin.".
