THE STANDARD – 31 DECEMBER 1866 – DEATHS

DURHAM-22d[sic], at Caerleon? Villa, Church-road, New-cross, Hatcham, Jacob Durham, Esq., in his 77th year

i

● Jacob’s death was registered by a Sarah Ann Durham - was this his (step-)daughter Sarah Ann I, who would have been married by then, and therefore have been called Sarah Ann Steward, or another daughter called Sarah Ann, or his granddaughter, Sarah Ann IV, who would however have only been 20 then?

● the death certificate states he died at 10 Church Road, Deptford, ie. at Caerleon? Villa, Church-road, New-cross, Hatcham, as shown above, which the author understands to be today’s St James (Church) Road

● Sarah Norris Shepherd died 4 June 1863 at 37 St James-place, New Cross Road, Hatcham, which was possibly the same road

● Jacob and Sarah must have known each other – his son married her daughter, and his granddaughter her grandson

● as the properties in St James Road seem to have been substantial, perhaps, being affluent, they both retired there, and were neighbours

● Jacob moved to London – his brothers William II and Richard I lived in Lambeth DURHAMS IN LAMBETH

why did Jacob marry both wives at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, Middx, although they were both from the other sides of London?

● in his will he refers to his step-daughter Jane Stone Vaughan as daughter, so Sarah Ann I? might also be a step-daughter

● a Sarah Durham was buried 20 JUN 1819, St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, abode Marsh? [Lambeth], no age shownCERT, which is the address given in their son Charles Jacob’s baptism record (6 FEB 1820, St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey), so it is likely that Jacob and Sarah were living in Lambeth then, and that this was her burial

● Mary Ann had at least one daughter by her 1st marriage, Jane Stone (see below)

● according to census records Jane was born about 1812, Soho, Westminster, Middx

● the only possible baptism record for her (see below) gives her parents as Timothy Stone and Mary Ann Bennett

● the only possible baptism record for Mary Ann Bennett in Lambeth about 1788 is the above one

● nothing more is known about her

FACTS CONCERNING MARY ANN STONE’s POSSIBLE BIRTH NAME:

● in the 1841 census a Jane Vaughan, age 3 (so born about 1838) was living in Jacob’s household, no relationship shown

● in the 1861 census a Jane “Durham”, “daughter-in-law”, age 49 (so born about 1812, in Soho, Middlesex), widow, was listed, plus 3 Vaughan grandchildren, including a Jane Vaughan, age 23 (so born about 1838)

● to be Jacob’s “daughter-in-law” in the modern sense, this Jane “Durham” would have to have married 1 of Jacob’s sons, but that is not the case

● so she must have been his stepdaughter, which “daughter-in-law” also meant in that period

● whilst the presence of 3 Vaughan grandchildren in the household does not explicitly state that they were the children of Jane “Durham”, it leads to that conclusion, and that therefore Jane “Durham”s’ name was really Jane Vaughan - the mother's maiden name of Jane and Mary Ann Vaughan was Stone

● a Jane Stone married Evan Vaughan in 1834, and Jacob was a witness (Evan died in 1840)

● so she must have been born by roughly 1814, which would be possible if she stated in the 1861 census that she was born about 1812

● a Jane Stone was born 29 APR 1811, and baptized 26 MAY 1811, St Patrick RC Church, Soho Square, Westminster, Middx, mother Maria Anna Bennett, father Timothei Stone [record in Latin]CERT

a Mary Ann Bennett married 5 OCT 1807, St George, Bloomsbury, Middx, Timothy Stone, bride and groom “both of this parish”CERT

● a Timothy Stone was buried 10 DEC 1815, St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, age 35 (so born about 1780), abode Marsh [Lambeth]CERT (which is where Jacob Durham later lived), which would explain why Mary Ann was able to remarry in 1823

● the only possible baptism record for Mary Ann Bennett in Lambeth about 1788 is 29 OCT 1786, St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, daughter of Fargus and Ann BennettCERT

● in Jacob’s Will, signed 1855, he mentions a “daughter”, Jane Vaughan, widow

CONCLUSION:

● so Mary Ann Stone might have been born Mary Ann Bennett

● it is unclear why Bennett and Stone baptisms, marriages and burials were celebrated in Church of England churches, with the exception of Jane Stone’s possible baptism in 1811, which took place in a Roman Catholic church - unless this was somehow connected with Catholic emancipation, which was evolving in that period

one wonders why, as first(?) son, he was given the name Alexander – there was already an Alexander Durham in London at this time – was he a relative? Did he help Jacob set up in business in London? Was there some Scottish ancestry? (no other Scottish names occur in the family, other than for Alexander’s son and grandson). It is understood that the Scots Durhams were pretty wealthy. On the other hand, Jacob was the business partner of an Alexander Grubb (partnership dissolved 1814) – could this simply be the reason? The name Alexander occurs in every generation of his descendants up to the present day

● Jane Vaughan and Mary Vaughan, of 81 Lewisham High Road, Deptford, Kent, are mentioned in the wills of James Thomas Smith and his wife Jane Ann Chivers – they are almost definitely Jane and her daughter Mary Ann, whose address this was, although Jane was only the half-sister of Charles Jacob Durham, John Thomas’ brother-in-law

● in 1837, when his daughter Jane was born, Evan’s address was the Joiners Arms, Camberwell, which features in DURHAM PUBS - in his will he gives the Cock & Lion, Lower East Smithfield, Middx as his address

● if the will was signed 29 DEC 1840 and the death registered in Q4 1840, ie. before 31 DEC 1840, he must have died between 29 and 31 DEC 1840

· Alexander Anthony part owned several houses in Greenwich, Kent (see below)

· it was thought that, unless he was able to buy them himself, he presumably inherited them from his father, and possibly from his grandfather, Jacob Durham I, and that they were possibly the fruits of the Durham pub business

· it now appears that the land originally belonged to the SHEPHERD family, so the property was presumably transmitted to the Durham family via his mother, Sarah Jane Shepherd Durham

· his 2 grandsons inherited some of them via their mother, Edith Eveline Dennis Durham (who presumably inherited the properties from her husband, Alexander Charles, Alexander Anthony’s only son), and his great-grandsons still live in two of the houses in Greenwich

· Alexander Anthony’s cousin William Jacob Smith Durham was living in Roan Street 1867-9, but there is no number, and it now appears that it was at The Grey Coat Boy pub, so this might have nothing to do with the presence of Durham properties in the street

● Adela Emma was Amelia Maria’s sister – it appears she moved in to look after Amelia Maria’s son when the latter diedFAM

● in 1908 the law about marrying a wife’s sister was changed, and they were married immediately

● however she is not in the census return for the household for 1891 or 1901, but then she is not found anywhere else either

● Alexander Anthony’s great-grandson, ACHD, who still lives in Greenwich, comments (2013):

“apparently Samuel Brewerton kept a stationery shop at 10 Royal Hill, Greenwich. He later lived in Sheen with the Clart family. Amelia Maria and Adela Emma Brewerton’s sister Caroline Ann married a Richard Clart”

In affectionate remembrance of Amelia Maria Durham, the dearly loved wife of Alexander, who fell asleep 10 June 1888 in her 30th year “Until the day break and shock flew away”

Also of Alexander Durham who fell asleep 2 MAY 1919 aged 74 years “I know that my Redeemer liveth
