DURHAM FAMILY HISTORY

THE DURHAMS IN LAMBETH, SURREY

● of William Durham I’s 6 sons, 3 went to live in Lambeth (William II, Jacob I, Richard I) – 1 stayed in the Watford area (Joseph I), and there is no record of the other 2 (John I, James I – perhaps they died young) – so either these 3 moved to Lambeth as a starting point as part of a migration trend towards the city, or, as the Durhams cannot be proved to be a Hertfordshire family in the first place, perhaps they originally came from the Lambeth area, and simply moved back to their ancestral area

● certainly, whether or not the Durhams were a Hertfordshire family to begin with, they did not leave much trace there!

CONCLUSION

William II seems to have lived in Lambeth for the rest of his life – his only Durham descent disappears after the 1891 census, but his female descent continued to live in the area

after Jacob II left Lambeth and moved into the pub business in southeast London/Kent, his numerous descent never seem to have lived in Lambeth again

Richard I’s family all disappear after the 1851/61 census, although his son William IV may have been the father of the first of the Durhams of Tottenham, who was born in Lambeth – on the other hand, this may have been a pure coincidence

NOTES:

● so Asylum Place and Meads Row seem to be the same address

● Asylum Place is no longer on the map, but there is still a Mead Row, in an area where there was once an asylum

● an 1870’s Ordnance Survey map shows that Asylum Place was roughly half way along Mead Row, on the east side

● the name Asylum Place seems to have disappeared from the map by the end of the 19th century

● the area once occupied by Asylum Place is now covered by modern buildings

● New Cut, now called The Cut, and Lower Marsh are still there, and are parts of the same geographical road

● Asylum Place/Meads Row and New Cut/Lower Marsh are not particularly near each other

● * as the insurance document does not give the first name, it could be for either Jacob or Richard

not living in Lambeth
