● in the 1861 census Charles Jacob quotes his place of birth as “Bedford Street, Hatton Garden”, but there is no Bedford Street in Hatton Garden today, only one in Covent Garden, which is a couple of km away, so either there was formerly a Bedford Street in Hatton Garden too, or his statement was incorrect Bedford Street, St John the Evangelist, HOLBORN YYY

● the 1841 census does not show the place of birth, in 1851 he just put “Middlesex”, and he died before the 1871 census

● he had land dealings in Lee, Kent in 1867, together with his brother-in-law, William Steward, but possibly died in debt – see DURHAM PUBS

● as of JAN 2015, 758 (known) descendants of Charles Jacob have been counted

● Frederick Thomas was a doctor

● his probate details give the date of death as 15 FEB 1947, family sources as 18 FEB 1947

● Pamela Watts Lye’s son’s wife (see below) comments:

● after the death of Matilda Louise’s brother, Percival William Norfolk, the latter’s daughter Doris Matilda Mary Norfolk went to live with Frederick Thomas and Matilda Louise, and they brought up their niece, who knew them as Uncle Nampie and Aunt Da [author’s note: Percival William Norfolk died Q1 1907, and his wife died 1955, but Doris Matilda Mary was already at the Knott home in the 1901 census, albeit as "visitor" (although relatives living with the family were sometimes shown as "visitor"), and in the 1911 census was at her Norfolk grandmother's home]

● a member of the Norfolk family recalls having her tonsils removed by Nampie - at home!

● Doris Matilda Mary married a Leopold G. Watts, and Frederick Thomas was the family doctor to the Watts family in Brighton, Sussex

● Frederick Thomas and Matilda Louise’s daughter Gladys Matilda was 5 years older than Doris Matilda Mary Norfolk - although they were cousins, Doris Matilda Mary encouraged her children and grandchildren to call Gladys Matilda "Auntie Gladys"

● Doris Matilda Mary and Leopold Watts’ daughter Pamela married a J. Lye

● “my husband recalls staying with "Auntie Gladys", her daughters and granddaughters, at 30 Wish Road, Hove - my late Mother and Father-in-law enjoyed visiting Diana and Harry on the I.O.W [Diana Margaret Zelma Carpenter, Gladys Matilda’s daughter, and her husband Henry William Harold Paul “Harry”]”

● her daughters comment:

► Diana Margaret Zelma and Robert Marshall Cowell met as fellow engineering students at London University in 1941

► during their marriage they were in a car accident which resulted in her sustaining a broken back

► following her divorce she also had a nervous breakdown, and later contracted polio (presumably from her brother, Peter, a doctor, who died from it), which also contributed to her difficulties with mobility

► she died in a house fire caused by, her family thinks, her electrically heated duvet - she suffered smoke inhalation and despite having one of those emergency help alarm pendant things, she wasn't reached in time
