A POTTED HISTORY OF THE SHEPHERD FAMILY

(by a Shepherd descendant, Cayman Islands)

· the first known ancestor was ROBERT SHEPHERD, joiner, of St Clement Danes, City of London, Middx, died 1752, married 1718 at  Greenwich, Kent, Elizabeth Tyrell, widow, née Messingham

· their son, MESSINGHAM SHEPHERD,1727-1783, joiner, then carpenter, married 1751 at Greenwich, Ann Adams

· their son ANTHONY SHEPHERD, 1752-1819, undertaker, married 1774 at Greenwich, Mary Land – they do not appear to have had children

· the undertaking business was taken over by his wife Mary on Anthony’s death

· after Mary’s death the undertaking business seems to have passed to Anthony's brother Jesse's son JOHN ANTHONY SHEPHERD (I) 1785–1841 (Jesse is described as a Broker)

· it then passed to John Anthony’s son, ANTHONY SHEPHERD, 1817–1881 - unmarried, no issue, he committed suicide

· it then passed to his brother, CHARLES MESSINGHAM SHEPHERD (I), 1823–1887, who lists himself as assistant undertaker (1851), undertaker (1853), coal merchant (1861,64,71,81), gentleman (1884 ), and on his death certificate is described as retired coal merchant

· his great-granddaughter thinks the undertaking business, which was in London Street, Greenwich, closed down about the time the railways were being built in that area

· Messingham Shepherd owned properties in Church Street and Church Fields, Greenwich, Dogkennel Road, Deptford, and in Blackheath - he bought 23 perches of the Roan estate from Greenwich church for £350 pounds sometime after 1744 - he died at Church Fields in 1783

· houses built on some of this property, in today’s Roan Street, are still in the possession of the DURHAM FAMILY, presumably transmitted via John Anthony’s daughter Sarah Jane to her husband Alexander William James Durham, and thence to their descendants

· the name Messingham has been given to various males in the family up to the present

· the Shepherds listed below only start with John Anthony, whose children were the first to marry into the Durham family

the Shepherds were undertakers, but the business may have died out when Anthony died 14 MAR 1881 – his nephew, Charles Evan Durham, who was his assistant in the 1861 census, and is shown as an undertaker in the 1871 census, may have carried on the business, but he died in 1875, age 33, and his only son, Charles Samuel, became a clergyman

KENTISH MERCURY - INQUEST REPORT – ANTHONY SHEPHERD

Found Monday a.m. by housekeeper (Mary Ann Read). Couldn't rouse him at 10.30. Room looked as usual. Door had to be broken down. Found in bed with throat cut. Razor was near his left hand though he was right handed. Doctor reports he was afraid as his sister (died 29th Jan 1881) had died of apoplexy. Doctor examined him, could find no sign of the disease, but suggested he gave up the business. Doctor was surprised to see a notice in window the following morning saying that he had retired from the business. [Was this the end of the undertaking business, about 14 MAR 1881?]. Doctor thought he had been dead 6 - 8 hrs when found. Verdict Deceased committed suicide whilst labouring under temporary derangement

i

he left £20,813-17s-1d - there is a will – the residue of his estate went to his younger brother Charles Messingham Shepherd I

one of the witnesses at the marriage was a J. Montgomery - nothing more is known about him or her - perhaps he/she was the reason they called their son, assuming that he was, Hugh Montgomery – otherwise, the use of these names is interesting – Montgomery is the name of Jessie Morris’ FUTURE brother-in-law, as her sister Florence Thomasine Shepherd married Henry Greville MONTGOMERY in 1888 – however, HUGH MONTGOMERY was also the name of the latter’s father, so perhaps there is some connection with him or his family

the house is still standing – over the years it has been nos. 16 and 28 Southborough Road, and is now no. 34, and is used as offices by a firm of chartered accountants, who have kindly provided much of this information (Edwin Messingham Shepherd was also a chartered accountant working at home when he lived there) – most of the back garden was sold in the early 1990’s for redevelopment, and the houses in Chadd Close stand on what was probably the tennis court – the house cannot be found in the 1911 census, yet the property includes stables, presumably putting its construction in the horse-drawn era

before WW2 up to 1939

1 Luga(r)no(?) Mansion(s), Campden Road, South Croydon, Surrey

Henrietta Sarah’s granddaughter says she thinks, with the war on and the blitz starting, it was very bad in the Croydon area because of the proximity of Croydon airport, so she sold her house and took her young granddaughter down to Cornwall out of harm’s way - they lived in boarding houses and hotels until her granddaughter started there at boarding school, and then Henrietta Sarah moved back to Croydon and lived in hotels – her granddaughter came back for the holidays – by then her son Edwin Messingham and his wife  were in rented accommodation - at the end of the war they bought their own house and lived at 25 Nottingham Road, and later at 49 Upfield, both in Croydon - eventually Henrietta Sarah moved from the hotel where she was living to 49 Upfield, where she eventually died – her granddaughter can't remember the names of some of the hotels, nor when she moved from one to another - the name of the house at 49 Upfield was “'Melbury”, but they rarely bothered to use it!
