The
Woodman pub, 181 High Road, Lee, Kent ·
the author does not have Alexander Anthony’s exact place of birth (1844), but
his father was living at this pub in 1840, so there is a fair chance he was
born here |
18
George Street, Greenwich, Kent ·
it has not been possible to find the original house – apparently King George
Street is a renumbered composite of three partial of George Streets, and 17A
(the next house on the census sheet) would have been down near the east end
by the park ·
this house however is a possible candidate ·

the row of houses in Roan Street, Greenwich, Kent
that Alexander Anthony owned · the plaque over the houses, 1846, is
presumably the year they were built · two of his descendants still live there · his cousin William Jacob Smith Durham lived in Roan Street in the
1860’s – his 2nd son (the author’s grandfather’s brother) was born
there, and his 1st wife died there – but there is no indication as
to where in the street, and whether he lived in a pub or in a house –
however, the cemetery record for his wife’s burial mentions THE
GREY COAT BOY pub, which is further down the street ►
DURHAM PUBS ·
the houses were built while the law still forbade the now-standard
construction of roofs with slates/tiles extending beyond the walls, so the
whole row has a front wall that carries on up above the eaves, which creates
a flat area of roof to leak |
4 Nevada Street (formerly Silver Street), Greenwich, Kent · this house was
eventually sold to pay death duties in the 1970’s |

St Alphege
Passage (formerly Church Passage), Greenwich, Kent · Alexander Anthony is variously recorded as
owning nos. 1-4 OR nos. 12,13,16 – perhaps they are the same houses,
having been renumbered |

southwest end, corner of Roan Street |
northeast end, corner of Evelyn Street, A206, next to the church of St Alphege · the shops shown are not part of St Alphege Passage |
