DURHAM FAMILY HISTORY

page 3

SHEPHERD

page 2:

that part of the Shepherd family connected with the Durham and Smith families

THE SHEPHERD FAMILY, GREENWICH, KENT

including THE BELL FAMILY, BIRMINGHAM, WARKS

THE MONTGOMERY FAMILY, SURRY

that part of the Shepherd family that is most connected with the Durham family, the children of CHARLES MESSINGHAM SHEPHERD I (1823-87), is descended from the Smith family, but the whole of the Shepherd family, as far back as it has been traced, has been included as so much information about it exists – most of the research was done by a Shepherd descendant, Cayman Islands

A POTTED HISTORY OF THE SHEPHERD FAMILY

(by a Shepherd descendant, Cayman Islands)

· the first known ancestor was ROBERT SHEPHERD, joiner, of St Clement Danes, Westminster, Middx, died 1752, married 1718 at  Greenwich, Kent, Elizabeth Tyrell, widow, née Messingham

· their son, MESSINGHAM SHEPHERD,1727-1783, joiner, then carpenter, married 1751 at Greenwich, Ann Adams

· their son ANTHONY SHEPHERD (I), 1752-1819, undertaker, married 1774 at Greenwich, Mary Land – they do not appear to have had children

· the undertaking business was taken over by his wife Mary on Anthony’s death

· after Mary’s death the undertaking business seems to have passed to Anthony's brother Jesse's son JOHN ANTHONY SHEPHERD (I) 1785–1841 (Jesse is described as a Broker)

· it then passed to John Anthony’s son, ANTHONY SHEPHERD (II), 1817–1881 - unmarried, no issue, he committed suicide

· it then passed to his brother, CHARLES MESSINGHAM SHEPHERD (I), 1823–1887, who lists himself as assistant undertaker (1851), undertaker (1853), coal merchant (1861,64,71,81), gentleman (1884 ), and on his death certificate is described as retired coal merchant

· his great-granddaughter thinks the undertaking business, which was in London Street, Greenwich, closed down about the time the railways were being built in that area

· Messingham Shepherd owned properties in Church Street and Church Fields, Greenwich, Dogkennel Road, Deptford, and in Blackheath - he bought 23 perches of the Roan estate from Greenwich church for £350 pounds sometime after 1744 - he died at Church Fields in 1783

· houses built on some of this property, in today’s Roan Street, are still in the possession of the DURHAM FAMILY, presumably transmitted via John Anthony’s daughter Sarah Jane to her husband Alexander William James Durham, and thence to their descendants

· the name Messingham has been given to various males in the family up to the present

GENERATIONS ARE NUMBERED FROM THE FIRST TRACED ANCESTOR OF THE SMITH FAMILY  (that part of the Shepherd family that is connected with the Durham family is descended from the Smiths), JOHN SMITH I (about 1757-1801), AND HAVE THE FOLLOWING BACKGROUND COLOUR:

● the Shepherds were undertakers, but the business may have died out when Anthony died 14 MAR 1881

● his nephew, Charles Evan Durham, who was his assistant in the 1861 census, and is shown as an undertaker in the 1871 census, may have carried on the business, but he died in 1875, age 33, and his only son, Charles Samuel, became a clergyman

● nothing more is known about Mary Brown

Sarah Norris:

● James Norris and Sarah Simmons had 5 children of which the 3rd was Sarah

● James and Sarah were married by Licence (not found)

● James left a pretty comprehensive will, of which his 3xgreat-granddaughter has a copy

● somewhere James married again after Sarah's death and produced at least another 6 children

● perhaps, but this is only the author’s speculation, her name was Sarah Morris, and she was related to Elizabeth (Morris?), William Smith I’s wife

● in her baptism record, her father’s name is definitely Norris

KENTISH MERCURY - INQUEST REPORT – ANTHONY SHEPHERD

Found Monday a.m. by housekeeper (Mary Ann Read). Couldn't rouse him at 10.30. Room looked as usual. Door had to be broken down. Found in bed with throat cut. Razor was near his left hand though he was right handed. Doctor reports he was afraid as his sister (died 29th Jan 1881) had died of apoplexy. Doctor examined him, could find no sign of the disease, but suggested he gave up the business. Doctor was surprised to see a notice in window the following morning saying that he had retired from the business. [Was this the end of the undertaking business, about 14 MAR 1881?]. Doctor thought he had been dead 6 - 8 hrs when found. Verdict Deceased committed suicide whilst labouring under temporary derangement

i

● Anthony was an undertaker

● he left £20,813-17s-1d - there is a will – the residue of his estate went to his younger brother Charles Messingham Shepherd I

● this is the only death in Greenwich, Kent R/D for a Charles Jesse Shepherd after the 1861 census, when he was definitely alive, and the 1871 census, where he cannot be found in St Alphege, Greenwich in 1863

● no burial record can be found in St Alphege, Greenwich in 1863

● no will record can be found

● 1 son evidently died as an infant, 1 in his twenties, and the 3rd son and his father disappear after the 1861 census

● so it would appear that the family became extinct, and with them, the “Senior Line” of the Shepherd family

● Hannah definitely died before 1851, and this is the only death for a Hannah Shepherd in Greenwich, Kent R/D 1841-51

OBITUARY

i

● if Florence Thomasine died in or as a result of childbirth, why did the birth take place in Dorking, Surrey, and her death in Herne Bay, Kent?

● Florence Thomasine’s sister, Jessie Morris Shepherd Durham, named her (possible) son HUGH MONTGOMERY DURHAM in 1886, before Florence Thomasine was even married

● however, HUGH MONTGOMERY was also the name of the Henry Greville’s father, so perhaps there is some connection with him

● Henry Greville married (2) 22 SEP 1892, Brixton, Surrey, Emily Caroline Wallbank Lewis, and had 4 daughters by the 1911 census

● a Henry Greville Montgomery, described as journalist in 1892, trained in the school of journalism founded by David Anderson in London, started organizing exhibitions in 1895, and was MP for Bridgwater, Somerset, 1906-10

● it is not definite that this was the same man

● the exhibition company still exists today – their site mentions “the fifth generation of this family business”, although Henry Greville, his son and grandson are only 3 generations, so perhaps there is some more descent

Henrietta Sarah’s granddaughter says she thinks, with the war on and the blitz starting, it was very bad in the Croydon area because of the proximity of Croydon airport, so she sold her house and took her young granddaughter down to Cornwall out of harm’s way - they lived in boarding houses and hotels until her granddaughter started there at boarding school, and then Henrietta Sarah moved back to Croydon and lived in hotels – her granddaughter came back for the holidays – by then her son Edwin Messingham and his wife  were in rented accommodation - at the end of the war they bought their own house and lived at 25 Nottingham Road, and later at 49 Upfield, both in Croydon - eventually Henrietta Sarah moved from the hotel where she was living to 49 Upfield, where she eventually died – her granddaughter can't remember the names of some of the hotels, nor when she moved from one to another - the name of the house at 49 Upfield was “'Melbury”, but they rarely bothered to use it!

● Edwin Messingham was a Master of Arts, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and a Chartered Accountant, ACA

● his elder daughter (born 1935) comments: “my grandmother [Henrietta Sarah Durham Shepherd Godfree] 'evacuated' me at the beginning of the war, although what stage I cannot remember, but we went first to Fryett's family in Swindon (?)  (Fryett was Granny's companion up to Fryett's death in early 1955) - I have no idea what their name was, whether they were Fryetts or had married - I know that happened but I remember none of it - we then moved on to Cornwall, near Newquay, where I went to a nursery school - by September 1940 we were up in Malvern [Worcs] and I started the term at Malvern Girls’ College – I really can't remember anything else.  I have no idea who Henry Matten was or whether he might have been Fryett's brother-in-law”

● in the 1939 REGISTER (29 SEP 1939), Henrietta Sarah was staying in Crediton, Devon, in Horace Alfred Matten’s household, along with Isabella Victoria Fryett, while Edwin Messingham’s elder daughter was probably still at home with her parents

● Horace Alfred Matten was Isabella Victoria Fryett’s nephew

● nothing more is known about (Jean) Bertha Colley
