The earliest definite Durham ancestor we can find
is WILLIAM I, born about
the 1750’s?, although details are beginning to emerge about his possible
family, who married twice in the Watford, Herts area, and who had at least
six sons, baptized in Sarratt ► PHOTOS – there is very little online about the Durhams
in the Watford area, and there don’t appear to be any Durhams buried in the
Sarratt graveyard (although they might not have been able to afford gravestones, or
the latter have disappeared), so we don’t know whether they originally came
from Hertfordshire, or from somewhere completely different – the fact that
a grandson was called Alexander hints at a Scottish descent, but on the other
hand, no other Scottish names come up in the family, so perhaps he was called
Alexander for some other reason.
Durham is not an uncommon surname – presumably they once came from
county Durham. Only a handful of mentions have been found of Sarratt or Watford in the records so far (see ► DURHAM STRAYS), leading us to believe that that was not the
Durhams’ area of origin. Of the six sons, provided our records are correct,
one stayed in Rickmansworth, Herts, and two turn up in Lambeth, Surrey, now
in Greater London ►
DURHAMS IN LAMBETH - perhaps the family originally came from London, and they just moved
back. We have little record of these two families, although one of the Lambeth
families MAY have descent still living in the Tottenham, Middlesex area. Another son, JACOB I, the author’s ancestor,
seems to have moved to Lambeth as well, and eventually to other parts of
London, and became a pub keeper (we don’t know whether he actually owned the
pubs, or just managed them – certainly he had land dealings in Lee, Kent in
1832 and 1852) – perhaps he had relatives there who helped him set up in
business. Although Jacob I was married twice in
Westminster, the family must have gradually moved towards what is now
southeast London: he had two (surviving?) sons, Alexander William James and
Charles Jacob. ALEXANDER WILLIAM JAMES’ family left the pub
business and the London area, and have since spread to Scotland and the Isle
of Wight, and include two clergymen and two doctors. Two of
Alexander William James Durham's descendants inherited some property in Roan
Street, Greenwich (which appears in William Jacob Smith's family documents in
the 1860's, although no house number or pub is mentioned), as well as other
property in the area, and it seems that they inherited this property through
the Durham line, so it would appear that property possibly originally owned
by Jacob Durham or his son Alexander William James Durham, fruit of their pub
business, still remains with members of the family today - this is the
opposite of what happened to any estate Jacob's other son, Charles
Jacob Durham, MAY have owned, as he possibly died in debt, probate being
granted to a firm of brewers. CHARLES JACOB, the author’s ancestor, also had
land dealings in Lee, Kent in 1867, together with his brother-in-law, William
Steward, and had seventeen children in southeast London, at least two of whom
went into the pub business, whilst some of the daughters made good marriages.
The pub business seems however to have died out with this generation – it is
not known what happened to it. One son went to South Africa, and his two sons founded families in the Gravesend,
Kent and Poole, Dorset areas, part of the latter moving to Nottinghamshire –
another son moved to east London, and his family are still going strong in
Essex, but it is not known what became of the descendants of the majority of
his children. Until now we do not know whether anyone emigrated
(except for the son who went to South Africa), but it MAY turn out that
someone did, as happened in all the families associated with the Durhams At least four of Charles Jacob’s descendants are
short in stature, so perhaps this is hereditary in the Durham family. ► PUBS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DURHAM FAMILY (IMAGE

NEW 21 MARCH 2013 · as
John Durham II, Elizabeth Durham I, Mary Durham I, and
William Durham I were all witnesses at each other’s marriages, they were possibly
siblings ·
however, strangely, of the "siblings", Mary could write her
name, Elizabeth, John and William could not write their names in the
marriage records · as
Elizabeth and Mary got married in Watford, and the John and William are
described in their marriage records as “of the parish of Watford”, there is a
fair chance that Watford is their home town · John I MAY
have been their father, but no baptism records have been found for the
four, other than that of an Elizabeth ● points in red still to be clarified yyy |

NOTES ON WILLIAM DURHAM V: ● the address
in the burial record was White Horse Street, where Jacob William was living
in the 1851 census ● this address
was also given in Sarah III,
Isabella II, Alice II and John Edward's baptism records ● also in John
Edward and Elizabeth III's
burial records ● no birth or
baptism record can be found in 1840 ● and the 1838
birth and baptism records would make him 11 years old at the time of death ● it might be
that the age given in is burial record was incorrect ● in the
baptism record the parents are given as William and Sarah, but there
were no William and Sarah Durham in this family who it MAY have been ● the address
given in the baptism record, Asylum Place, is where Jacob William's father
was living in the 1841 and 1851 census, and where Jacob William himself was
living in the 1861 census ● Jacob
William cannot be found in the 1841 census, so there is no way of knowing
where the family was living in that period ● the father's
occupation is given as gardener, which Jacob William and his father were ● it is
therefore only presumed that he was Jacob William's son, and not definite |
|||||||||||||||
NOTES ON THOMAS DURHAM: ● the address
in the burial record was also White Horse Street ● no baptism
record can be found, but if he was only a few months old when he died,
perhaps he died before he could be baptized ● it is
therefore only presumed that he was Jacob William's son, and not
definite |

● the author
previously considered Isabella’s husband’s name to be George Jacob Field (I), but in his baptism record, marriage
certificate, death record, and 1871 and 1881 censuses, the name is always plain
George Field; only in his children’s baptism record is he referred to
as George Jacob Field. But there his son is referred to as plain George
Field – so this must be an error made by the Vicar who reversed the names
of father and son ● nothing more

● Henry Jacob
was in the army 1868-82, being stationed in Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Singapore,
South Africa, Ireland and Malta ● his medical
record shows that during this time he contracted various diseases – might
they have led to the fact that not many of his children survived childhood,
whilst Henry James seems to have had mental problems? ● the first 3
children are also listed in the General Register Office Regimental Birth
Indices, 75th Regiment ● no death
record can be found in England & Wales for a Henry Jacob Durham,
only for various plain Henry Durhams ● as he cannot
be found in the 1911 census, the Author presumes that he died before - the
only death record in the London area before 1911 is for a plain Henry
Durham, age 53 (so born about 1853), Q4 1906, London City, Middx R/D, but
there is no indication whatsoever that is Henry Jacob’s death |

● the baptism
record is for a William Simpson, son of Thomas and Alice, residence Mead Row,
Lambeth, Surrey, father’s profession coach painter ● the baptism
records for Thomas and Alice’s children George Thomas and Charlotte I also show their father’s profession as coach
painter ● in the 1841
census, taken 6 JUN 1841, Thomas was shown as a “painter j(ourneyman?)”,
address 77 Tower Street, Southwark, Surrey, which is where William was
presumably born ● so Thomas
and Alice must have moved (back) to Lambeth between 6 JUN 1841 and 1 AUG 1841,
or perhaps St Mary, Lambeth was their “family parish”, and they preferred to
have William baptized there |

Eliza Jane’s granddaughter comments: ● Matthew Brice and John Henry were not the sons of Henry
William Akers [as has been suggested in some Ancestry.com family trees, and
especially as he possibly died several years before they were born] ● both of their birth certificates have no father's name on
them ● in the 1891 census Eliza Jane is already a widow with
Arthur John and Edith as her only children ● in the 1901 census she also has Matthew Brice aged 8 and
John Henry aged 6 and a lodger named William Sainsbury, a widower, aged 44 -
Eliza is aged 42 at this time ● now whilst this might not be the case, I have a feeling
that he is the father of Matthew Brice and John Henry, so this is the reason
they MAY not have been baptized ● in John Henry's army records there is his Casualty Form -
Active Service from when he was wounded in France in 1915, he was 21 then,
which gives his next-of-kin as (Father) William Sainsbury of Castelmain Road,
Peckham ● in his attestation papers when he joined up in 1914 aged
19 he has his next-of-kin as (Father) William Henry Akers of Commercial Road,
Peckham - he MAY have thought this was so at the time - this was then crossed
out and his married sister Edith Pilcher of Albany Road, Camberwell, was
named next-of kin later on as she had brought them all up after the death of
Eliza Jane, and he spent his leave there - Matthew Brice also had her down as
his next-of-kin ● both sons Arthur John and Matthew Brice were killed in
France in 1915 |
|||||||||||||||||||||
● nothing more is known about Alfred Akers ● the above death record is the only likely one that can be
found for or Henry William Akers ● nothing more is known about him |

● Henry James was listed twice in the 1939
Register, once at home with Rebecca, with his correct date of birth, both
“married”, and once at a lunatic asylum ● in the latter, his date of birth was
shown as plain “1877”, but if this had been written by the medical staff, it
was possibly only an approximation, “married” ● so why were they both shown as “married”,
when they did not actually marry until 1945, when they were both in their
60’s – 70’s? ● and Rebecca was listed with her correct
date of birth, but as “Rebecca G.
(= Grace?) Durham”, although her 1st husband had died in 1921 ● so it seems as though there might have
been some impediment for their not marrying until 1945 ● but no previous marriage can be found for
Henry James ● in the electoral registers for 1956-8 he was
living at Dorking General Hospital, and in 1960 at St Anne’s Home for the
Aged, Redhill, where he died in that same year ● so if he was a patient in a lunatic
asylum in 1939, and spent the last few
years of his life as a long time patient, he must have had serious medical
and/or mental problems ● in his marriage certificate, Henry James gave his age as 68
(so born about 1877), which is more or less correct, his profession as
decorator (jobbing) – in the 1939 Register
he was listed as a builder’s labourer, but his father as plain Henry Durham
(deceased), mechanical engineer ● however, as the Henry James Durham born 29
OCT 1878 was indeed living with Rebecca in the 1939 Register, there can be no
doubt that this is the correct maggiage ● he was the
last traced male Durham in the Senior Line |

(LOCAL
NEWSPAPER?) Folks – And Things They Do - 26 JUN 1964 There’s a surprise in store for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McKenzie,
of 75 Ridgenood[sic] Drive, Pensby, Heswall, this week-end. They are
celebrating their diamond wedding to-day and their nine children, 23
grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren have something up their sleeves
for this wonderful couple. Both Tom and his wife are 80 years old. For forty
years they lived at 20 Townsend Lane, Anfield. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
● so far, the births for a total of 9 children born,
but not living in 1964, have been traced, as the 9 includes Eileen
(1922-3) and Ramsey (1924-44) ● unless of course there were other children, not listed ● 23 grandchildren: so far, only 16 have been found (and
several of these were already dead), so there are several missing ● 16 great-grandchildren: so far, only 1 born by 1964 has
been found |

the death record is for a William Edward Littlejohns, born just “NOV 1901” ●
in the 1939 Register, at the same address as William Edward Littlejohns, born
1 NOV 1901, there is a Mabel I. Littlejohns, born 27 APR 1901, plus 1 person
born after 1916 ●
the only marriage found online for a William Edward Littlejohns and a Mabel
I. is in Q4 1941, Sheppey, Kent R/D, with Mabel I. Walker ●
his 2nd marriage is only speculation, as, is he died in Watford R/D,

●
James Christopher is shown as single in the 1939 Register ●
it was previously thought that he married Q3 1935, Prescot, Lancs R/D, EDITH
M. GLAYSHER ●
an unspecified source gives Edith M.’s date of birth as 1912 ●
the 1939 Register shows this entry: 18 Sefton
Road , Litherland U.D., Lancs Edith
M. Gibson born 13 APR 1912
Unpaid Domestic Duties Married James
C. Gibson born 19 JAN 1908 Shopkeeper (Newsagent) Married ●
a probate record shows: GIBSON
James Christopher of 60 Litherland Park Litherland Lancashire died 21 October
1965 Probate Liverpool 17 January to Edith MAY Gibson widow and Francis
Robert Gibson collector/clerk. £16863 ●
as no specific place of death is given, this means he actually died at
Litherland, Lancs, which was in Crosby, Lancs R/D ●
a James C. Gibson died Q4 1965, Crosby, Lancs R/D, age 57 (so born about
1908) ●
so it would seem that the James Christopher Gibson who died in 1965 was
married to Edith May, and was born in 1908, as per the death record and the
1939 Register ●
Francis Robert Gibson, presumably this James Christopher’s brother or close
relative, was born Q2 1900, West Derby, Lancs R/DBMD, son of Francis and Eliza Annie GibsonCENSUS ●
it has not been possible to find Francis Robert and James Christopher in the
same household in the 1911 census, but in Francis Robert’s family there was a
Christopher, his brother, age 3, (so born about 1908), so perhaps this is him ●
so it looks very much as though Edith M. married a different James C. Gibson |

●
the baptism record shows the date of birth as 25 MAR 1906, but there
are no birth records in 1906 for a Thomas McKenzie ●
the online records show a total of 11 children born in Lancashire 1927-42,
mother’s maiden name Anderson, of which 4 in West Derby R/D, so there is a
possibility that some or all of them 11 were their children ●
whilst it has not been possible to find Thomas himself in the 1939 Register,
a Florence McKenzie, born 25 OCT 1907, has been found at 11 Denford Road,
Liverpool, Lancs, with 7 persons born after 1916 ●
a Thomas Clifford McKenzie, born 20 OCT 1929, baptized 9 NOV 1929, Liverpool,
Lancs, was the son of Thomas and Florence McKenzie, was almost definitely
their son ●
of the 10 children born by the time the 1939 Register was taken, 3 had
already died, making a total of 7 living, which would correspond to the
number of persons born after 1916 in the 1939 Register ●
this would also partially help to explain the “23 grandchildren” mentioned in
Thomas’ parents’ diamond wedding anniversary newspaper article |

● Doris’

lot older than she was. She was in a wheelchair in her 50's and after the
shock of the death of my Grandad, aged 52, whilst on holiday in Spain from a
heart attack, my Nan kind of gave up a bit and let herself go as they say” |

A POTTED BIOGRAPHY
OF MALCOLM HUGHES (1966-2012) BY
HIS NIECE Sadly back in March
my Uncle Mal suffered a fatal heart attack. He had suffered most of his life
with health problems, he was always ill as a child with various problems, at
the age of 23 he had a stroke and brain haemorrhage. He then had kidney
failure a few years later and was on dialysis for a few years until he got a
transplant. After the death of my Nan and Aunt in 2004 he suffered from
severe depression, living alone in my Nan’s old house, and in March 2011 he
suffered a mild heart attack caused by the new (well, 12 years old) kidney
failing and was admitted to hospital. He had to go back on dialysis but this
was the turning point for him. He moved into a new bungalow and had a new
lease of life. He started driving again, socialising and was in contact with
all his old friends again. He was due to go for dialysis on this particular
day and they changed it from the morning until the night time. He was leaving
the house with his pet dog and collapsed in the driveway. Sadly by the time
he was found and taken to hospital the damage was already done. His heart was
still beating faintly and he was in intensive care, however, the damage to
his brain was irreversible and he died the next day. The hospital said he had
suffered a heart attack caused by high levels of potassium in his blood which
the dialysis would have sorted if he'd have had that earlier appointment that
he was due to go on. They also said that he'd been found by a neighbour and
when the paramedics arrived they would not treat him because the dog was sat
next to him on the ground and the paramedics had to wait to get the police to
move the dog first. Makes you wonder how long all this would have taken and
if it could have been prevented if they'd treated him sooner. He was only 45.
Anyway, he had a beautiful send off, and we all have fond memories of our
time spent with him. |

● NOTES: ► Roman numerals after a person’s
name, eg. William I,
are purely to distinguish different people with the same name ► The code before each name, for example
2D3, is based on the following principles: the 1st
figure, in this case 2, refers to the generation, ie. Generation 2 the 2nd
letter, in this case D, refers to the family, ie the Durham and associated
families the 3rd
figure, in this case 3, refers to the number of identified children,
including possible children, for that particular generation |
