Prendete

Aosta
Valley is the smallest (3262 kmq) and the least populated (118.000 inhabitants)
Italian region, a mountain territory lying in the heart of the Alps, an ideal
bridge between the Mediterranean and the centre of Europe. Divided into 13
lateral valleys, it offers a natural environments of breathtaking beauty. One of
these valleys is VALTOURNENCHE.
Entering
this valley from Châtillon, perched on the mountain ridges, you will find five
small towns: Antey-Saint-André, Torgnon, La Magdeleine, Chamois and
Valtournenche.
The
way to Valtournenche is easily found from wherever you come from, Italy or
abroad, thanks to the highway (you follow the A5 Turin-Aosta until reaching the
exit point Châtillon-Saint Vincent) and then onto the N.46 regional road (for
18 km).
The
two tunnels of Mont-Blanc and Great St.Bernard allow an easy entrance through
the Alps in all seasons. People coming via air have only to take their pick,
choosing the airports of Turin, Milan, Geneva or Zurich. The nearest railway
station is in Châtillon (20 km). Line coaches to and from Châtillon, Aosta (42
km), Turin (110 km) and Milan (180 km).
Situated
at 1524 m above sea level, Valtournenche is one of the greatest tourist resorts
in the Aosta Valley. It offers many opportunities in winter and in summer.
Tourists can spend a quiet and pleasant holiday in an atmosphere that maintains
the mountain villages' traditional lifestyle.
Modern
lifts are available to skiers and allow exciting downhill runs on powdery snow
slopes, with a network covering a 1500 m altitude difference, from 1524 m at the
departure of the cable-car to 2982 m of the Colle Superiore of Cime Bianche. The
connection with other lifts allows the enjoyment of Breuil Cervinia and Zermatt
slopes. During the spring, you can ski "off piste", practice alpine
skiing and during the summer you can enjoy skiing on the glacier.
Hospitality
counts on 5 *** star hotels, on 11 ** star hotels, on 3 * star hotels , on 1 Bed
& Breakfast and on 1 Farm-house.
Two
km away from the centre, in Glair (1328 m), there is a two star holiday camp
(Camping Glair), which is open all the year round. It has 91 camping spaces (each
of 50 mq) for a max of 365 people.
Otherwise,
there is the possibility to rent apartments directly from locals or with the
help of the local estate agencies.
In
Valtournenche you will find a post-office, two banks with automatic teller
machines, a tourist information office, a library, medical assistance, a chemist
and the ski school.
During
free time, guests can choose from facilities such as skating rink, swimming-pool,
sauna, turkish bath, gymnasium, artificial wall for free climbing, tennis and
there is also the possibility to rent ski-doos in winter and mountain-bikes in
summer.
A
riding-school in Loz for horse lovers organises one hour or one day excursions.
Also
in the village there are shops, typical restaurants and ski equipment hire.
Cross
country ski lovers have at their disposal, 2 and 4 km from the centre, two
courses (6,5 km and 4,8 km long), situated in Maen and in Champlève
respectively.
Valtournenche
is an important ski resort. The scenic chain of the Grandes Murailles is its
great background. Skiers have at their disposal 1 cable-car, 2 chair-lifts and 5
skilifts. Its territory (40 km of slopes) unfolds in the amphitheatre between
Monte Roisetta and the Gran Sometta and offers a marvellous view of the
Matterhorn. Ski slopes are of easy and intermediate difficulty and are suitable
for every requirement!
At
Colle Superiore Cime Bianche (2982 m) there is the connection between the
territories of Breuil-Cervinia and the neighbouring Zermatt, forming one of the
greatest "domaines skiables" of the Alps. Thanks to this combination,
it is possible to ski the whole day without repeating any slope. "Off the
beaten track" lovers can run from the Colle Inferiore and Colle Superiore
of the Cime Bianche to Courtod valley reaching Saint-Jacques in the Ayas Valley
(with the help of a mountain guide).
In
the basin of Cheneil, ski mountaineering tours are possible to Punta Falinère
(m 2763 - 3 hours), to Petit Tournalin (m 3207 - 6 hours), to Monte Roisetta (m
3334 - 5 hours), with departures from Hotel Panorama (open also in winter).
In
summertime, the valley of Valtournenche offers the mountain climber and the
hiker many opportunities, from the peaceful walk in the woods to climbing for
skilled mountaineers or for people assisted by a mountain guide.
We
suggest the following excursions: lake Cignana (2157 m), mountain hut
Perucca-Vuillermoz (2909 m), Cheneil (2088 m), lake Lod (2033 m).
Nobody
can forget the "Grande Balconata" of the Matterhorn, a stage ring for
hikes, including the higher side of the valley. This course (mountain hut
Barmasse, lake Cignana, Gilliarey, Antey Saint-André, La Magdeleine, Chamois,
lake Lod, Cheneil, Alpeggio della Manda, Blu lake, Breuil Cervinia) follows
terraces around the narrow valley - where the river Marmore flows - and offers a
panoramic sight, dominated by the magnificient profile of the Matterhorn, of the
Grandes Murailles and of the Breithorn.
Tourists
in Valtournenche cannot leave without having seen "Le Gouffre des
Busserailles", a 104 m long and 35 m deep ravine, cut in the mountain by
the strength of the Marmore, that cascades here heavily with a 10 m drop.
Finally,
folklore must not be neglected either, thanks to the richness of its costumes,
its local language (patois), its songs, its dialect theatre and all its cultural
tradition.
The
dry and temperate climate of Valtournenche allows a pleasant holiday in all
seasons.
