Nella seconda metà dell'800 ci si arrampicava sulle sue vette, ma già nel 1936, quando con la prima bottiglia di champagne si inaugurava la funivia tra Breuil e Plan Maison, venivano qui a sciare da Oxford e Cambridge. Tre anni dopo, arditi calcoli ingegneristici e robusti mezzi completavano l'opera fino ai 3480 di Plateau Rosà. Poi non ci si ferma più. Soltanto la guerra, con le sue severe ragioni militari, impone la messa fuori servizio degli impianti. Ma subito dopo i lavori riprendono con rinnovi e ampliamenti continui. Agli anni '50 risalgono i primi ski-lift, del '72 è la prima seggiovia, nel 1986 e nel 1998 si realizzano due telecabine da primato... Intanto, vuoi per la bellezza vuoi per il successo della valle e delle sue montagne, sempre più famosa e numerosa la gente arriva sulle pendici del Cervino. Gina Lollobrigida e il suo primo marito, Arturo Toscanini, Marylin Monroe, Aristotile Onassis, Fausto Coppi, Renato Rascel e molti altri, quasi tutti allievi del mitico Leo Gasperl. Il Conte Rossi di Montelera lancia la moda di Breuil-Cervinia; ecco che così una gran clientela vip comincia a frequentare e inevitabilmente ad amare Breuil-Cervinia. La famiglia reale vi trascorreva ogni anno lunghe e dolci primavere. La fotografia del Cervino e della sua funivia si posano poi sulle scrivanie delle redazioni di Londra in compagnia di Albert Einstein e Enrico Fermi in posa, impegnati in questa zona nella sperimentazione sui raggi cosmici.

La storia del Cervino

Dopo una quindicina di tentativi sul versante italiano per la cresta del Leone e quasi altrettanti lungo la cresta svizzera dell'Hornly, il 14 luglio 1865 Whymper, Hudson, Douglas e Hadow con le guide Croz e i due Taugwalder sono i primi uomini che pongono i piedi sulla vetta del Cervino.Tre giorni dopo sarà la volta degli italiani J:A: Carrel (detto il Bersagliere) e J.B. Bich, che arrivano in cima lungo la cresta del Leone.
Nel periodo 1867/77 Giuseppe Corona, accompagnato dalle guide J.A. Carrel e J.J. Maquignaz, compie numerose prime sulle Grandes Murailles e sulle Petites Murailles. Nel 1879 A.F. Mummery, assieme alle guide A. Burghener, J. Petrus e A. Gentinetta, raggiungono la vetta del Cervino dalla cresta di Zmutt che è la via naturale, ossia quella di più facile accesso, ove non si considerino i mezzi artificiali attualmente esistenti lungo le creste dell'Hornly e del Leone. Nel 1906 è la volta della Punta Bianca, della Punta Carrel e della Dent d' Hérens saliti per la prima volta dal Colle Tournenche e da Ryan e Lochmatter. Pochi anni più tardi (1911) Mario Piacenza con le guide J.J. Carrel e J. Gaspard effettuano la scalata al Cervino per la Cresta di Furggen, aggirando però gli strapiombi terminali. Solamente nel 1942, in piena guerra, Luigi Carrel (detto il Carrellino) con Giacomo Chiara e Alfredo Perino porteranno a termine la prima integrale di Furggen. Nel periodo tra le due guerre mondiali assistiamo alla conquista della parete nord del Cervino ad opera dei fratelli Franz e Toni Schmid (1931) e, sempre nello stesso anno, alla vittoria sulla sud del Cervino compiuta da Enzo Benedetti con le guide Luigi Carrel e Maurizio Bich. Nel 1932 viene superata anche la difficile e pericolosa parete est. Sono due cordate: Luigi Carrel con Antonio Gaspard ed Enzo Benedetti seguiti da Maurizio Bich, Luciano Carrel e Giuseppe Mazzotti.
Alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale, il Carrellino ha già al suo attivo come prime salite sul Cervino, che considera la Sua montagna, l'integrale di Furggen e le due pareti est e sud. Resta ancora inviolata la parete ovest (compresa tra la cresta del Leone e quella di Zmutt), una parete di 1500 metri di dislivello sulla quale, a suo tempo, Whymper aveva espresso il lapidario giudizio: " I foschi precipizii che incombono sul ghiacciaio di Zmutt, escludono ogni tentativo da quella parte". Carrel vuole tentare egualmente e nel 1947 parte con Carlo Taddei. Rimarranno in parete per 90 ore, passando tre bivacchi e senza riuscire a superare l'ultimo tratto di parete per l'improvviso cambiamento del tempo. La prima diretta sulla parete ovest del Cervino sarà portata a termine nel 1962 dalle guide di Valtournenche: Giovanni Ottin e Renato Daguin.
Come avete notato, in questa breve e non certo esauriente cronaca delle prime più significative della Valtournenche, il Cervino fa, come sempre, la parte del leone.
Ormai siamo giunti alla storia contemporanea. Nel 1953 Walter Bonatti e Roberto Bignami compiono la prima invernale sugli strapiombi di Furggen e tre anni dopo Bonatti porta a termine la prima solitaria sulla parete nord del Cervino. E per finire il giorno 11 settembre 1985 Marco Barmasse in 15 ore percorre in solitaria le quattro creste del Cervino. Salita da Furggen, discesa da Hornly, salita da Zmutt e discesa dal Leone.
