● George Isaac
must have emigrated to Canada sometime before the 1871 Canadian census, as he
appears in that – the reason for his emigration is unknown – it might have
been for family reasons – there certainly seem to have been some strange
circumstances with the children - he might have separated from Ann(e)
Frances, as sole executor of his will was his mother – in the 1871 census Ann(e)
Frances and Emily Louisa are at her mother’s address, listed as “Anne DURHAM, married” – in his probate
details he is referred to as “formerly of the ‘Gordon
Arms’ Tavern High Holborn in the County of
Middlesex ….. Licensed Victualler” ►
DURHAM PUBS |
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
● nothing more
is known about – Finn; no marriage has been found, but Ann(e) Frances is
referred to as ”Ann Frances Finn” in the will of her uncle, James Thomas
Smith, 1896, although he might be confusing her with her sister, Sarah Jane, who
married John James FENN |

● one of the
witnesses at the marriage was a J. Montgomery - nothing more is known about
him or her - perhaps he/she was the reason they called their son, assuming
that he was their son, Hugh Montgomery ● otherwise,
the use of these names is interesting: Montgomery is the name of Jessie
Morris’ FUTURE brother-in-law, as her sister Florence Thomasine Shepherd
married Henry Greville MONTGOMERY in 1888 ● however,
HUGH MONTGOMERY was also the name of the latter’s father, so perhaps there is
some connection with him or his family ● an H. G.
Montgomery was a witness at James Edward’s daughter Catherine Jessie’s
wedding – this was presumably her uncle, Henry Greville

ROWLAND PERCY B. DURHAM ·
in the 1922 electoral register, a Roland Durham and a Clara Durham
were living at 41 Thornford Road, Lewisham, Kent –
this is the address at which the family were living in the the 1911 census, so this this will be Rowland Percy B.
and his mother, Clara Charlotte ·
in the 1924 electoral register, a Roland Durham was living at 39 Thornford Road, Kent, alone, which is logical, as Clara
Charlotte died in 1922 ·
in the 1932 electoral register, Roland Percy Durham was living at 41 Thornford Road, alone ·
no electoral registers registers are available for
1932-44 · in the 1939 Register,
a Roland Durham is an inmate in the Casual Wards, Hackney Hospital, Middx · in the 1945-7
electoral registers, a Roland Durham is living in the Ladywell
Institution, Lewisham [a geriatric hospital], alone ·
so the death given above for plain Roland Durham, born about 1879, would be
feasible |

– 30 NOV 1943 On Nov. 25,
1943, at The Towers, Worthing, suddenly, but peacefully, SAMUEL MITTON WATERFIELD, in his 91st
year. Interment to-day (Tuesday), 1.15. p.m., Eltham

issued by Montague Burton Ltd mention the purchase on 8 MAY 1932 of a shop,

18 Blyth Road, Bromley, Kent |

i |
notes by a member
of the family: As far as I can detect, Samuel's father was a victualler and
won the army supply contract - hence the wealth. The name Mitton
as a second name is perpetuated down the to the present generation. There is
a silver rose bowl inscribed to celebrate Samuel Mitton
and Jane Ann's 60th wedding anniversary, 14 AUG 1937, signed by members of
the London Guild of Silversmiths - Samuel Mitton
had obviously lifted himself into this professional group from his pawn shops |

● Nora Marguerite and Philip John
Longworthy were last together at the same address
in the 1926 electoral register ● from the 1929 electoral
register onwards she was alone at her various addresses ● as the death record is for Nora
Marguerite Collins, even if they divorced, presumably she did not remarry ● they were not at the same
address in the 1939 Register – she was living at 60 Corner Fields, Streatham,
Surrey - 61 Corner Fields was her
address when she died – he at what seems to be a guest house at 11 Campden Road, South Croydon, Surrey |
|
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||
|
● it was previously thought that
Philip John Longworthy possibly died before 1935FAM,
but he appears in the 1939 Register, so that can’t be correct ● the only likely death record is
therefore this one, for Philip J. L. Collins, born about 1883 ● nothing more is known about him |

● an H. G.
Montgomery was a witness at Catherine Jessie’s wedding – this was presumably
her uncle, Henry Greville Montgomery, husband of
her mother’s sister ● Catherine Jessie and George were
last together at the same address in the 1937 electoral register ● Catherine Jessie appears alone
in 1938, after which neither can be found ● in the
1939 Register, the nearest to “Catherine J. Searles
born 1893” was a “Catherine J. Searles born 1894,
date unknown, inmate [NOT patient]” at Bow Arrow Hospital, Dartford, Kent ● she also died in Dartford, Kent
R/D ● so it is assumed that this is
the correct person |
|
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||
|
● in the
1939 Register, the only George Searles living south
of the Thames born in this period and not living with a wife was a “George Searles, born 1885, no date, unmarried, lunatic”
at the Longrove Hospital, Epsom, Surrey ● the above
death record is for a George Searles, born about
1885 – as Epsom was in the Surrey Mid Eastern R/D,
this is possibly the same man ● however,
George gives his age as 26 in his marriage certificate, making him born about
1892-3 ● there are
however no suitable George Searles born 1888-98 in
the 1939 Register ● nor are
there any death records for a George Searles born
1891-5 ● in the
1911 census, the only apparently plain George Searles,
son of George Searles, was the son of George Searles, born in Ireland, retired Inland Revenue officer,
and Sarah Mary Searles, age 19, so born about 1892,
in Stoke Newington, Middx, living at Ramsgate ● as George
gave Ramsgate as his residence at the time of marriage, this is possibly the
correct person ● nothing
more is known about him |

for Lillian O. Beamish, and the 2nd for Lillian O. Durham or Beamish
(with 2 “L”s), in the 1939 electoral register and
in William Charles’ probate details
her name is given as Lily Opha Clews, her 1939 Register record is still
inexpiably closed, and her death record is for Lily Opha
Clews, so it would appear that she used a different version of her name on
every occasiond ● the death record shows her date of birth as 12
AUG 1895, so the person who reported the death got the date right, but
the year wrong too, as sometimes happens, for example when this person is not
particularly close to the deceased · she married (2) Q3 1938, Birmingham,

● Frank was
referred to as colonel in his son John Francis’ wedding announcement ● the birth
record is for simple Frank ● in his
probate details he is referred to as “Frank otherwise Charles Frank”, and
probate was granted to “Caroline Waterfield widow”
and others ● an 1880
court case mentions a Mr Hargood, a pawnbroker, of
168 Vauxhall Bridge Road (see notes by a member of the family, BELOW) ● there is a
modern building there now |
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Frank’s 2nd
marriage: ● a family
source had indicated that Frank married 3 times, but was unable to name his 2nd
wife ● until
1924, Frank was in the electoral register at 10 Haydn Avenue, Purley, Surrey, with Minnie Marguerite – they divorced in
1924 ● besides
his residential addresses, he is also listed at 168 Vauxhall Bridge Road,
Pimlico (Westminster), Middx, where he had a shop (see notes by a member of
the family, BELOW), the last time in 1949 ● from 1929,
there is also a Gladys Waterfield at this address –
their residence is given as 86 Ebury Street, Belgravia,
Westminster, Middx ● in 1932,
Frank and a Gladys Muriel Waterfield are at 86 Ebury Street ● in 1939,
he and Gladys Muriel Waterfield are at 31 Heath
Rise, Kersfield Road, Putney, Surrey ● Frank’s
entry in the 1939 Register is not viewable, probably owing to some technical
mix-up (APR 2016) ● Gladys
Muriel’s probate details: WATERFIELD
Gladys Muriel of 31 Heath-rise Putney Hill Middlesex [sic] (wife of Frank Waterfield) died 26 October 1939 at Pelham House
Claremont-road Seaford Sussex Probate Liverpool 14 December [1939] to Guy Lorymer Riseley printer and
Eric Jackson Riseley managing director. Effects
£2233 10s. 3d. ● these not
only mention the Heath Rise address and Frank Waterfield,
but also show her connection to the Riseley family ● the only
problem is that the probate details state that Gladys Muriel died at Seaford,
Sussex, whereas the death record states that she died in Hailsham,
Sussex R/D – Seaford was NOT in Hailsham, Sussex R/D ● Guy Lorymer Riseley, born 1904
(mother's maiden name CLEAVER) was, according to one tree on Ancestry, her
son, and Eric Jackson 1904 (mother's maiden name alao
CLEAVER), born 1907, was definitely her 1st husband Stanley Riseley’s sonCENSUS
(Gladys Muriel was not at the family home when the 1911 census was taken) ● the only
marriage between a Frank Waterfield and a Gladys M.
in the 1920’s in the London area was with Gladys M. Riseley ● Gladys
Muriel Cleaver married (1) Q3 1901, Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorks R/D, Stanley RiseleyBMD,
ophthalmic surgeonCENSUS, (1868-1915BMD),
and had at least 9 childrenCENSUS ● nothing
more is known about her |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Frank’s 3rd
marriage: ● the same
family source as above had indicated that Frank’s wife was called “Carrie”,
but was unable to give her surname ● a tree on
Ancestry states that she was born Caroline Chilton, 15 FEB 1898, San
Antonio, Texas, USA, daughter of Charles S. Chilton and Edith Cumberbach Brydon ● and that
she died at Budleigh Salterton,
Devon - Budleigh Salterton
was in Exeter, Devon R/D ● she
married (1) Q3 1917, Honiton, Devon R/D, Reginald Emil OstBMD
(1844[sic]–1963[sic]) (actually born 1885BMD-1963, AustraliaFAM), and (2) Arthur Parry Richards
(1892–1937)FAM – this 2nd
marriage has not been found in the records ● an
Ancestry tree shows that there was a son from this marriage, David Richards,
and a daughter ● an
Ancestry tree also shows Reginald Emil married (2?) 4 APR 1925, Union Church,
Hong Kong, Fedora Alice (Dora) Deakin ● the
marriage notice for Catharine Marion Ost, 1943
(1920-99), states that she was daughter of Reginald E. Ost
and Caroline Waterfield ● so
presumably Caroline and Reginald Emil divorced sometime between 1920 and 1925 ● in the
1939 Register, Caroline Richards, born 15 FEB 1895[sic], widow, is living
with a person born after 1916 – possibly the David Richards mentioned above -
and a child’s nurse, at Flat 2, Heath Rise, Kersfield
Road, Putney, Surrey – the same building where Frank was probably living ● her
surname has been crossed out and the name Waterfield
inserted, which means that she subsequently married a Waterfield ● the Q1
1940, Wandsworth, Surrey R/D was the only one in
this period in the London area for a Frank Waterfield,
and it was to a Caroline Richards – and Putney was in Wandsworth, Surrey R/D ● Caroline
obviously visited Britain with her family at least twice, as she arrived back
at New Orleans, Louisiana, USA in 1898, age 3, and at Galveston, Texas, USA
in 1903, age 8PASSENGER LISTS ● these
dates would make her born in 1895, not 1898 ● although
no record can be found of when she returned to Britain, in the 1911 census
she was at school at Downside, Western Road, Cheltenham, Glos ● nothing
more is known about her |
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
● notes by a
member of the family: Frank owned several pawn/jeweller’s shops in London, and
a substantial collection of houses in Lee and Erith, Kent. His son John
Francis (Jack) inherited the shop in Vauxhall Bridge Road. All three sons
went to Sandhurst - Jack was a colonel, Patrick
brigadier and Michael captain. During WW2 Jack survived Dunkirk, Patrick was
in North Africa. After the war Jack returned to the shop in Vauxhall Bridge
Road, Pat briefly set up a market garden business at his father's old home,
Ware House in Lyme Regis. He then worked for The Sultan of Muscat & Oman
(Sultan Said), as minister of defence until he retired. Mick lived in Devon,
boatbuilding (small craft) and Pat and Madeleine later moved to Devon to be
near him |
