a descendant of Frederick Evan says: the story goes that the family weren't happy for him to marry Harriet Miles as she was a milliner, and that at one stage they sent him to Australia to break up the relationship, but he returned and married her and was consequently disowned by the family – the Author has not managed to verify that though TO BE REVISED yyy

● Frederick Evan’s granddaughter Lilian T. Otter Keeble commented: “Harriet had come from a very well-to-do family, and she mentioned  the opposition to the marriage. Also that Simeon Miles was a designer of boots and that they were patented”. Another Durham correspondent comments: “I have found no proof of this, and all the censuses for Simeon say he was a milliner or wool manufacturer. So maybe there is quite a different story between the Durhams and the Miles”

· Harriet’s name (Harriet Georgina) and age (87) on her gravestone are incorrect – her grandson, Sydney Edgar Durham, who had the grave refurbished in 2000 says: “it was with recollections sent to me by my Aunt Lilly [Lilian Jane Durham Foster Barclay] - I would not have thought she would have got her Mother’s name wrong - and the age given on her Death Certificate that I got Monumental Masons to refurbish the grave in the year 2000, to include her name and to add that of my Father, Edgar. If you are able to read the inscription you will see that my Father is not buried there, he was in fact cremated and his ashes scattered in Surrey.

At the time of Harriet’s death in 1941 probably only five of her surviving children attended her funeral - money was short, and it was agreed among the [children] that she should be buried in my Mother’s grave, although in real life my Mother disliked her for some reason. Money was so short that not one of the five volunteered to add her name to the monument, and it was left to me to do so 59 years later! The grave will revert to City of London ownership in 2039 …”

· although Harriet’s Death Certificate only gives the name as simple “Harriet Durham”, the misunderstanding might have arisen because Lilian Jane was confusing her Mother’s name with that of her Sister, Henrietta Georgina - Lilian Jane reported the death, but she got her Mother’s age wrong, simply because she might not have known exactly how old her Mother was, as often happens in these cases

● some family sources suggest that Frederick Evan “made good use of” money left to him relatives (story to follow YYY), but he does not appear in many wills, and then only as a “junior beneficiary”, although obviously the author does not have the wills of all his siblings

James, died as an infant aged 6 months, born late 1890’s, and

Alice, died as a child aged 5 years, again, born late 1890’s

so they are probably these children:

Alice Frances Durham born Q3 1893, West Ham, Essex R/DBMD

James Charles Durham born Q4 1895, West Ham, Essex R/DBMD

DURHAM WAR TIME MOVES PROMPTED BY BOMB DAMAGE

(some notes by Frederick Evan’s grandson, 2015)

● [Lawrence Frederick Durham / Jeanette Josephine Bourdon] Fred & Nett’s house in Fourth Avenue, Manor Park, was badly bomb damaged, and the council moved them to a thatched basic cottage in disrepair, at Little Saling, Essex (something like 50 miles from Manor Park!)

● [Edgar Sydney Durham] Fortunately, the Capel Arms suffered no more than ceilings down and losing all four of its large plate glass shop windows as a result of a nearby landmine

● [Henrietta Georgina Durham / William Charles Otter] Hetty & Will’s house at 87 Bristol Road was bomb damaged and the resulting in a council move for them as well to Collingwood Gardens, Ilford

● [Lilian Jane Durham / Walter John Barclay] Lilly & John’s house in Altmore Avenue, East Ham, was bomb damaged and the council moved them to Beechwood Gardens, Ilford

the following spellings of the name have been found

BIRTH Angolia Codanti - but it might just have been a mistranscription of what was actually written on the certificate

MARRIAGE Angiola Codante

DEATH Angiola C. Davenport

PROBATE 1881 CENSUS Angelia

1891 CENSUS Angolia

1901 CENSUS not found, she was probably somewhere in service

1911 CENSUS Angiola

so the author has assumed that the correct spellings are ANGIOLA CODANTE DETAILS Angiola Codantie

Angiola Codante’s nephew states

● she was involved with the Spiritualist Church

● she had 3 sons, Charles, Lionel and Douglas – it is however strange that Lionel Evans should have been born in Medway, Kent R/D, whereas all the others were born in West Ham, Essex R/D, unless it was because of the war – a Leonard P. Davenport was born Q2 1922, West Ham, Essex R/D (died Q1 1923, Holborn, Middx R/D?) – however, her probate details mention a Lionel Evans Davenport, so this must be the son’s name

● all 3 sons and their father moved in stages to the Bournemouth, Hants (although Angiola Codante must have moved there too, if she died there)

● William Thomas was a labourer at Beckton gas works, Essex

● a grandson of her brother, Harold George Durham, says “I remember that my grandfather said Angiola was a medium or spiritualist and that he was little bit scared of her as he didn't like that sort of thing

● nothing more is known about William Thomas Davenport

· the birth record only says "Carmen J.", and it was presumed that the J must stand for "JEANNE", after her mother - the marriage certificate says JEAN, but the notices in the Irish newspapers when she died say “JEANNE” - admittedly, it's more likely they would have got the name from the family than from an official document, and perhaps the family thought of her as "JEANNE" – her brother says it should be “JEAN” – he has now obtained her birth certificate, and the name is definitely “JEAN”
