i

● William Jacob Smith had 3 pubs in Greenwich, Kent and/or owned the Neville Arms in Borough High Street, London [actually Southwark, Surrey], 5 others in Greenwich, KentFAM

● it is however unclear whether he owned the pubs or just managed them

● he was apparently found in bed with a maid (some say he "rented" the pubs, that's why he fell into disgrace)

● presumably for this reason he emigrated to S. Africa in 1882?, although he is missing from the 1881 census

● one wonders why he didn’t take his sons with him – perhaps he emigrated under strange circumstances

● he gave his son Charles William II £100 before he went, but later had to ask for it backFAM

● he died a pauperFAM

● estate £160-16-4 gross, nil netWILL

● his son Charles William said he had "2 stepmothers"FAM

● in the 1871 census Louisa is shown as wife (perhaps that is why the sons were living elsewhere)

● the address where she died, 62 Tottenham Court Road, is a 3/4 storey late 19th century, commercial property built as a public house, and now in retail use at ground floor level with vacant office chambers on the upper three floorsINTERNET

● nothing more is known about Madge Isabel – no records can be found about her

● perhaps she lived in South Africa

● she was granted administration over William Jacob Smith’s estate, 21 OCT 1895 – she gave a London addressWILL, so perhaps she had come back from South Africa

HIS FATHER:

● at the time of the 1871 census was living at the Man in the Moon pub, 7 Bear Lane, Greenwich, Kent

● when he remarried in 1872, he gave Museum Street, Bloomsbury, Middx (possibly another pub) as his address

● his 2nd wife died in 1880 at the Rose & Crown, 62 Tottenham Court Road, Bloomsbury, Middx

● by 1881/2, he had emigrated to South Africa

● it would therefore appear that, probably from his mother’s death in 1869 onwards, Charles William lived in Gravesend, Kent with his maternal aunt, Mary Ann Martin Lygo

Henry Charles Lygo was named Lygo after his uncle, Henry Charles Lygo, who brought Charles William Durham II up

● a comment from his niece: “Uncle Harry lived in Clarence Place [Gravesend, Kent], a big house, the two girls seem to have their own flats and they met up at meal times and at tea time, and would sell each other [things] - they each had their own rations, so if one had used any of theirs they would sell to who ever wanted it, be it jam butter bread whatever”

● John Stanley’s eldest daughter, Muriel Alice, born 1920, told the author in FEB 2013 that, as a child, let's say about 1930, she was taken to a pub in Lewisham? to see her grandfather (Charles William Durham II)'s, first she said brother, but it couldn't have been, so we settled for, "relations"

● author’s comment: the area, Lewisham, is right, but as far as I can calculate, the Durham pub business was long since finished - as far as I can see, the last Durham in the business, Charles John Durham I, died in 1895, and doesn't seem to have had any children – therefore it m ay be that some of the generation after William Jacob Smith Durham / Charles John Durham I ran a pub(s), possibly independently of the original former Durham pub business

Jeannette Anne Victoria emigrated to Canada in 1955

● an email from her daughter: “in 2003, around her 70th birthday (and 25th wedding anniversary to Alan Black) she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer (in the duodenum)”

● “she was diagnosed with what we thought to be an auto-immune disorder called Sjögren's syndrome, the symptoms being loss of saliva and dry tear ducts - as it turned out they are also symptoms of this form of cancer. She was told her tumor was in-operable, but just like Jinny, she researched until she found a specialist who would try to perform the operation. Unfortunately the operation was unsuccessful, and so began 4 years of treatments and experimental treatments (one from the UK no less) and in the end  massive doses of vitamin C - supposedly the cure all! She was very brave and truly a fighter in every sense, but in the end the cancer won. Mum passed away August 9th 2007, we said our farewells in a lovely memorial service on August 14th..and we buried her ashes in Hudson, Quebec on Thanksgiving of that year. Her husband Alan, has been suffering from depression on and off for years, and has been struggling ever since. He is still living in their lovely home in Hudson. He is virtually house-bound, and has been for 4 years now. It is very sad, as he is a lovely man, whom we all adore. My younger brother sees him weekly, and oversees his well-being. I live outside of Toronto (about 5-6 hours away by car) and try to visit 2-3 times a year. We are not sure what will happen next, but he is safe and comfortable in his home for now. This is still very sad for me, and a little hard to write, but I feel now that the "hard" part is over”

i

● the above death record is for James Walter W. Huntley

● in the 1939 Register a plain James Huntley (born 7 JUL 1910), married, was listed with a Hester Huntley, name corrected by hand to Maud H. Huntley (born 9 NOV 1919), also married, presumably, but not necessarily, his wife, although no marriage record can be found in that period, 1 person born after 1918, Brian Huntley (born 29 DEC 1934), and 2 other persons born after 1918

● the birth record for Brian J. G. Huntley, birth registered Q1 1935, Poole, Dorset R/D, shows his mother's maiden name as Butler

● there are birth records in Poole, Dorset R/D for another 3 Huntley children, mother's maiden name Butler, in 1933, 1936, and 1946, ie. only 1 between Brian J. G., 1935, and 1939, so it is not clear who the 2nd person born after 1918, after Brian might be

● also, if James Walter William was living with Maud Hester in 1939, it is strange that a child, mother's maiden name Butler, should be born in 1946

● but a child, E., was born Q3 1939, Poole, Dorset R/D, mother's maiden name Musselwhite, so perhaps that was the 2nd person born after 1918

● however, if Hester / Maud H. was only born in 1919, she would be too young to be the mother of the other children

● a Maud H. Musselwhite was born Q4 1919 (which would correspond with the date of birth given in the 1939 Register), Poole, Dorset R/D, mother's maiden name HardwidgeBMD

● and a Maud H. Musselwhite married Q4 1955, New Forest, Hants R/D, a plain James HuntleyBMD

● so it looks as though James Walter William and Hester / Maud H. finally married in 1955, although the date that her name was corrected in the 1939 Register book was 1967

● there was the possibility that Winifred Bessie died before 1939 Register, and that James Walter William remarried, but no death record could be found for a Winifred B. Huntley, or a (2nd) marriage for a James Walter W. Huntley with a Hester / Maud H. before 1939. But Winifred Bessie’s granddaughter’s tree on Ancestry (seen OCT 2021) gives her death as 16 JUL 1983, Poole, Dorset, although no registration record can be found

● however, a Winifred B. Huntley (born 18 FEB 1917), “married”, was listed in the household of George and Bessie H. Butler, in Poole, Dorset – her parents?

● if this is the correct Winifred Bessie, she would still only have been 16 when she married and the 1st child was born

● nothing more is known about Winifred Bessie Butler or Maud Hester (Musselwhite?)
