The National
Archives hold the following documents: a) Ephraim Gay,
born Wiltshire: Attestation papers to serve in the Royal Marines at Woolwich
1847 (when aged 21), Discharged [discharge date not given] as [discharge
reason not given]. b) Ephraim Gay,
born: Broughton, Wiltshire; Age at attestation: 21; Attested: Woolwich;
Joined in: 1847; Discharge reason: Paid £20; Discharge year: 1850 (does this
mean he PAID £20 to get OUT of the Royal Marines?) this would make him born around 1826 – in
his first marriage certificate, 1849, he is described as a Marine |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
the fact that
he married the first time in the Parish Church, but second time in an
Independent Chapel, suggests leanings towards the family’s eventual
membership of the Plymouth Brethren – see GEORGE EDWARD GAY, BELOW the family
moved to Bath, Somerset, 1891~1901, so leaving Broughton Gifford, Wilts |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
there was
another EPHRAIM GAY in Wiltshire at the same time, born about 1822, Staverton, Wilts, son of Ned Gay, married 24 DEC 1843,
Trowbridge, Wilts, RUTH RICKETTS, daughter of John Ricketts, weaver &,
died 17 APR 1889 &,
Plymouth, Devon, variously described as cloth worker, agricultural labourer,
saw sharpener, children Eliza, William – no apparent connection |

one site has Lydia as Lydia Maud
Sawyer, but the name Maud doesn’t occur anywhere else, and it has
not been possible to contact the author of the site to check this point |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
John emigrated
to Canada in 1900, with Lydia, Spenser Fox and Bernard John, but not
Frederick, returned to England DEC 1911, having sailed from Portland, Oregon,
USA, and emigrated again to Australia in 1912, with Frederick as well |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
there is a
family story that there is some connection to the family of Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s family
– nothing more is known, and the story doesn’t specifically mention this
family, but certainly Spenser (Spencer) Fox’s name is strange – Fox is his
paternal grandmother’s maiden name – could Spencer be the name of his
maternal grandfather, ie. Lydia Alford later Sawyer’s
real father? Why else would Lydia have called her son Spencer? No connection with the Spencers have
been found in the official records, but other records might tell otherwise.
The story also mentions Australia, where the family certainly emigrated to |

Henry and George
Edward went to Canada, arriving APR 1906 on the PARISIAN
(steerage) - on 7 AUG 1906
they crossed the border into the USA at Detroit, bound for Indianapolis,
Indiana – George Edward returned to the UK,
arriving 20 JAN 1908 at Liverpool on the CAMPANIA (3rd
class), but Henry is not listedONLINE
PASSENGER LISTS – unfortunately, the reason for their choosing
Indianapolis is unknown – although their elder brother was living in Canada
at that time, there is no evidence that they went to see, or stayed with, him
– they did not give any addresses or names of relatives – the date for Henry’s
return to the UK has not been found
yet – the reason for this trip of several months is unknown – it can only be
surmised that they went with a view to emigrating, but changed their minds –
one of George Edward’s daughters thinks they may have gone more than once,
but so far only one trip has been found, and if they went with a view to
emigrating but changed their minds, they would hardly have made more than one
trip |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Henry and Edith
Mary eventually moved to Ealing, Middx |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
together with
his brother George Edward, Henry set up Gay Brothers, an engineering firm, in
Kingston on Thames, Surrey, later Hampton, Middx –
there was another Gay Bros Ltd in Birmingham, Warks,
dealing in sheet metal goods, but there is nothing to suggest there was any
connection |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Henry and Edith
Mary brought up George Edward’s children after the latter’s 1st
wife died |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Edith Mary
visited the USA in 1952 – 45 years after her husband - departing 29 APR,
arriving New York 5 MAY, and returning from Quebec, Canada, arriving 14 AUG –
on her US immigration form she stated she was visiting relatives (an E. A.
Hood) in California, so it is unknown whether she visited any Gay relatives
in the USA or Canada – she travelled with a Charlotte R. Hunter of 26 College
Close, Harrow Weald, Middx, housewife, age 65 (so born
about 1887) In the 1926-36
Electoral Registers Albert and Charlotte R. Hunter were living at 40 St
Kilda’s Road, Harrow, Middx Edith Mary had
a sister, Charlotte Rachel Hood, born Q3 1886, Stoke Bishop, Glos – Charlotte R. Hood married Q4 1919, Uckfield, Sussex R/D, Albert Hunter, and at least 4
Hunter children, mother’s maiden name Hood, were born 1920-5 in Uckfield, Sussex R/D – one of these was Maurice Hunter,
born Q2 1924 – family sources say Henry Gay’s niece, Marion Fowles, born 1916, married a Morris Hunter, so there may be some connection, or this may just
be a coincidence – no Hunter/Fowles marriage has
been found So it looks as
though the 2 Hood sisters went to California to see their (Hood) relatives (all this
information taken from BMD, CENSUS, and Ancestry and Findmypast
TRAVEL RECORDS) |

|
it hasn’t been
possible to get any photos of the various premises, even if they still exist
- Union Street is right in the centre of Kingston and is full of trendy

possibly why they needed them – Oldfield Road must
have been the first decent sized premises |

SPENSER is the
name in the birth certificate, his legal name, even if, let’s suppose, his
parents wanted to call him SPENCER, and the name was just miswritten!
However, in other online records, the name is written as both SPENSER and
SPENCER |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
as Catherine
Agnes’ sister, Isabel MacDonald
Walker, also died in Perth, perhaps they emigrated together |

i |
Francis Boultwood’s Great-grandfather, Franz Heinrich/Francis
Henry Breidenbach (about 1813-1871) was born possibly
in Cologne, Germany, immigrated to the UK, married a Court Perfumer, William
Page’s daughter, Emily Ann Page (about 1817-1894), took over his perfumery
business, which was established during the reign of King George III, and changed the name from PAGE to BREIDENBACH
in 1836 – he was naturalized in 1847 - his children and grandchildren were
given the name of Johann Maria Farina within their names after the famous Eau
de Cologne manufacturer (1682-1754), so the initials J.M.F. in his father’s
name probably stand for Johann Maria Farina the surname was
changed from Breidenbach to Bryden
in 1916 owing to anti-German sentiment in the UK during WW1 he married (2) Q2
1960, Westminster, Middx R/D, Rhoda E. Dawe, and had a son A THE BREIDENBACH FAMILY – the site is
however poor on family history |
