After finishing work on the film, George Méliès intended to release it in America and thereby make lots of money. Unfortunately, Thomas A. Edison's film technicians had already secretly made copies of the film, which was showed across the USA within weeks. Méliès never made any money from the film's American showings, and went broke several years later (while Edison made a fortune on the film).

From Wikipedia: This 1903 short is the first version ever put on celluloid of the Lewis Carroll classic. Seen today, it's of great historic value, and it's amazing that it still exists, given that many silent films were lost forever. The surviving print is in a pretty bad shape, with many big white spots and missing frames, but no one should be surprised. Anyway, it's watchable enough.
The film, which, at a running time of 10 or 12 minutes in a common silent movie projector, was the longest ever produced in UK to the day (the standard being 3 or 4 minutes, and so, some distributors bought and showed just some parts of this Alice, not the full footage), is more an illustration of Carroll's book than an adaptation. That is, the director assumes you know the story, and so the movie is more like filmed drawings from the book than a filmed story. All the best-known passages are here: the White Rabbit, Alice shrinking and growing up to pass through the door (very primitive but strangely effective FX), the garden, the oversized Alice inside the Rabbit's house, the Ugly Duchess, the baby-pig, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter's tea party (with a March Hare that looks amazingly like "Frank" from Donnie Darko!), and the Queen of Hearts procession. You won't find Carroll's witty satire here (as you won't find it either in most of the posterior versions), but it's actually a cute set of vignettes and illustrations from the book.

From Wikipedia: Released as separate films, lensed in an eerily abandoned Paris in 1915, Louis Feuillade's stark chapterplay LES VAMPIRES is a grim and powerful work which is worlds apart from the later glitz and polish of the golden age serials produced by the American studios.
It should be noted that serials were nothing new at this point in time. Formative efforts such as THE PERILS OF PAULINE had already established the appeal of these generally inexpensive actioners, with their bizarre twists and inventive death traps.
The emphasis was generally on a resourceful protagonist pitted against an equally inventive and determined fiend -- frequently an unsuspected heir or lawyer out to obtain an undeserved inheritance.
LES VAMPIRES did this formula one better, making the menace a vast and largely unsuspected criminal empire which is devouring Paris from inside. With members taken from all classes, the dark society is able to plunder, blackmail and murder without dear of action from the authorities. This continues until their removal of a government investigator brings ambitious reporter Philippe Guerande (Edouard Mathe) into things.
Sent to the country to search for details on the official's murder, Philippe plans to combine business and pleasure by meeting Dr. Lox, an old family friend who has a chateau in the area.
Arriving at Lox's estate at the same time as an American heiress who means to purchase the property, the reporter is promptly framed for theft by the hooded agents of the gang, who are secreted in the ancient building.
Locating the dead investigator's head, Philippe manages to turn suspicion on Lox. Murdering the heiress and making his escape across the rooftops, the "doctor" is revealed as the Grand Vampire the (evident) leader of the criminal society.
Philippe falls into the Vampires' hands but is rescued by Oscar Cloud Mazamette (Marcel Levesque) -- a clerk and minor member of the gang whom he had helped earlier. Philippe and Mazamette combine to try to expose the society's operations and bring the gang to a deserved end.
A series of adventures follow, with the Grand Vampire (Fernand Herrmann) and exotic dancer/criminal Irma Vep (Musidora) providing much of the opposition. In a surprise development, it is revealed that the Grand Vampire is not the gang's ultimate leader. When it is convenient, his superior eliminates him. He, in turn, commits suicide when he is imprisoned by the police.
Satanas, the criminal mastermind behind the group's poisons and explosives steps in and assumes co-command with Irma Vep. This occurs too late, however, as Philippe is closing in on the gang's chief meeting place.
After a series of close calls, the reporter and the reformed Mazamette succeed in destroying the Vampires' leadership and bringing the rank and file members to justice.
Not enough emphasis can be placed on the serial's grim and stark look, which almost functions as a characters of its own. This is a Paris where the gang's activities have seemingly terrified the people to the degree that they refuse to venture out unless it is absolutely unavoidable.
Production took place during WW I, when the streets were largely abandoned, and this strange desolation combines with the scurrying of the few characters to present a powerful emphasis that goes beyond the actual turns and twists of the plotline. The result is compelling, entertaining, and more than a bit weird in spots. Tinted scenes add to the welcome air of unreality.

From Wikipedia: Maciste in Hell is a surreal and visually dazzling masterpiece. Fellini called it "one of the 10 best films ever made" and convinced him as a kid to enter the film business.
After saving a child from a Faust-like character big macho goodhearted Maciste goes to hell and fight hordes of vicious demonic creatures. It's packed with violence, humor, nudity etc. Two scenes blew me away; at one point Maciste decapitates a demon but by some impressive reverse FX the creature picks up his battered head and put it back on his shoulders, in hell there's a giant Godzilla-sized satan who eat humans like peanuts!?! The set design is incredibly impressive, the use of color tinting is pure perfection, and the devil costumes are so detailed I've never seen anything like it. The Danish Film Institute had hired a classical piano player for this ultra rare showing, and he knew what he was doin' to create the different moods of this epic.
Brignone's classic was just one of a dozen Maciste film made in Italy in the 1910s/20s, later Freda did a remake and Mario Bava was very inspired by this film to make his "Hercules In The Haunted World".

Classic and splendid film that is still fascinating to watch. Walter Ruttmann did not make a documentary about Berlin, although 75 after date it certainly can be considered a document about a Berlin that is no more, he composed a film that tries to catch the essence of the atmosphere of a big city. The film is a good example of the art style Neue Sachlichkeit (functionalism): it is a cross-section of Berlin's life in which every element is equally important, shown without comment and in its totality it is the expression of the joy of Berlin's life. It is not a film about the life of Berliners, it is Berlin seen as a living mechanism.
The subtitle referring to Großstadt (big city) is the key, it could have been any other city. The idea as such is not the makers' prerogative. Elsewhere the fascination with the hustle and bustle of the big city was also present as was the idea to catch this on this film and in music: e.g. Cavalcanti in France made a film about Paris and the US Ferde Grofé composed his musical suite Metropolis (1927) with New York in his mind. The irony of all these endeavours is that the film or music is abstract, but that the result is a romanticizing view.
Ruttmann made several abstract film and he refers to them in the beginning with abstract horizontal lines dissolving to rail way tracks. In my view the rest of the film is also abstract. Although we see real people and situations the brilliant editing constantly keeps the film abstract: the situation and the people in a shot are not important, important is the juxtaposition to other shots: is the composition varied enough?. Thus we see a filmic composition (in stead of a musical one) and the subtitle Symphony is just. As with every composition the theme has to be modulated to keep it interesting and it is here where the weakness of the film is. The building up from the start and elaboration up to the beginning of the afternoon is splendid, precise and exiting; but from that point it bogs down for a while: we see another shop, another street etc. without adding much to what already was. It may be that Ruttmann was aware of this, note how quickly he finishes the afternoon to continue with the night-life and then immediately all the excitement and filmic fun is back.
In an 1939 interview cameraman Karl Freund said that everything possible was filmed using only candid cameras. I have my doubts. Let's take for example the sequence of the drowning lady: how could he make an extreme close-up with a hidden camera in such a brilliant angle? (By the way: if she really tried to commit suicide, was Freund himself not only one of the gaping bystanders without doing anything to save her?) How could he foresee the right angle to film the prostitute picking up her client near the cornered shop window? Not that it matters for the quality of the film, but it proofs the old adagium: filming is deceiving.

Porter's cutting was also among the most sophisticated to date, as multiple locations and events were suffused with a previously unseen urgency. From Wikipedia: Beautifully preserved short that shows the influence on American filmmakers by George Méliès, the pioneer of trick photography and special effects.
This short is very much in the Melies tradition. It starts with a man in a parlour smoking a pipe. We then cut to an iris shot with oversized props of two mischievious tobacco fairies, one of whom is being stuffed into a pipe. The two humorously battle, playing pranks on one another. About halfway through the short, the background disappears, but this is to allow for some of the real highlights of this film. Halfway through the film, we seen a fabulous stop motion animation sequence where a flower becomes a cigar, an fine early example of the art. (The first animated film only came out three years before this one reeler in 1906.) After the man returns to smoke the cigar, we are treated to a complicated inset shot, with the fairy first setting fire to some matches, and then the man retaliating with a spritzer bottle. Any time we see the fairy close, it is through an iris, but in this case, when we see the man, we also see the fairy on the table dodging the water. This effect is executed beautifully and looks believable over 100 years later.

From Wikipedia: Many of the costumes and much of the make-up in this film resemble those used in the 1902 Broadway musical "The Wizard of Oz". It's important to point out that you can't compare this movie at all to the 1939 classic--and for so many reasons. Film was just in its infancy in 1910 and full-length movies meant about 10-20 minutes. Sets and costumes were simple and often looked like they were taken right off the stage of a high school play. And, writing and acting as we know of them today, just wasn't invented yet. So I cut the early films a lot of slack and praise movies that actually had decent production values and provided some entertainment into the 21st century--most early films fail on both these counts.
The movie isn't really based on the books but on a stage musical and this at times is pretty obvious--especially when the characters start dancing for no apparent reason at all! But, aside from this odd way of telling the story, it's an adorable and interesting film--particularly as it has people in animal costumes throughout (not just the lion). It just seems very cute and makes watching this historical picture a lot easier! By the way, despite the good production values, this film is not as good as some of the full-length films by the Frenchman, Georges Méliès. His 1902 LE VOYAGE DAN LE LUNE has even better sets and tells a more coherent and watchable story.

The fact that it most likely propagated racial hatred and led to increased enrollment in the Ku Klux Klan disturbingly reveals the power effective filmmaking can wield over a wide audience.
This fact was not only picked up on by Lenin, Eisenstein, and the Soviet realists but by the American government during World War I who sent speakers to movie theaters to ensure their propaganda would reach a large audience.
Cinema needed someone like Griffith, a skilled filmmaker and innovator as well as a spokesman for the medium.
He worked to give it importance and influence with inspiring quotes such as, "We’ve gone beyond Babel, beyond words. We’ve found a universal language—a power that can make men brothers and end wars forever."
Birth of a Nation was not only an artistic success but an unqualified economic one as well, proving that movies of substantial length and quality would bring in audiences.
This is, quite infameously, one of the most virulently racist movies ever made, complete with "Aunt Jemima", happy slaves dancing for their masters, and an evil, scheming figure named Gus that wants to rape a beautiful young white girl. In fact, few if any of the nastiest old stereotypes of African-Americans are missed here.

Part IV and V). This excellent film ends with the retreating of the enemy still further, with much battle coverage. More dog fights are seen, and more heay artillery. What's interesting is that along with the Allied victories, the film never shies away with the observation that with victory, it sometimes comes with a price. Scenes of death on the warfield are shown throughout Parts 2-5, but none to gruesome (thank goodness!) Also throughout the films is the emergence of pets of soldiers in the warfield, A practice of which I'm not sure if they're continuing. In part IV, a tiger is even shown, tied up and is described as a 'mascot' for the men. Part IV also shows the non-war lighter side, as productions are shown with some very convincing drag done by the soldiers, gambling and ither horseplay.
All in all, these series of films are crucial of observation of the history of war, and presents a well balanced overview of the first big war, World War I. Some interesting WWl military vehicles sequences.

He knocks himself out and while unconscious, an escapee from nearby prison exchanges his uniform with Buster's clothes. When Buster comes to, he find himself on the lam from dozens of prison guards. Buster evades them, until he dashes right into the prison. There he runs into one of his golfing friends (Sybil Seely), who is the warden's daughter. The girl finds his prison garb a hilarious joke until her father mentions that Buster (according to the number on his sleeve) is to be hanged that day. With the help of an elastic band, the girl saves him from his fate, but then Buster has to overcome a prison riot and a huge, brutish fellow convict (Joe Roberts). Before he was paired with Oliver Hardy in the late 1920s, Stan Laurel did solo shorts like this one, much in the style of Fatty Arbuckle or Buster Keaton. These days, Laurel's solo work is often forgotten or overlooked, but this movie is a true masterpiece.
As a parody of the Valentino silent "Blood and Sand," it follows humorous rise to fame of a small time matador from Spain. The gags (and surprisingly, the puns) in this film remain timeless, and you can see echos of these gags in Bugs Bunny, Monty Python or Woody Allen, and that make this film far ahead of its time in terms of comedy. Like many of the comedians of his era, Laurel is an incredible acrobat and performs the physically demanding stunts wonderfully. While not as daring as Harold Lloyd or Buster Keaton (for example, there are a couple of cases where a dummy stands in briefly for Laurel), the timing and expressions are played to the hilt.

Although it would probably work all right as a spoof of the basic story, it is particularly designed as a parody of the John Barrymore version of "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" (also available in this Collection), so if you see or have seen that particular version, there are many more amusing details and parallels that you can spot.
Laurel's character, like the original Dr. Jekyll, has an alter ego, but here it is merely a mischievous one. It's funny to see the light-hearted parallels to the much more serious scenes in the original story, and while the movie is rather unrefined overall, most of it is amusing.
Laurel's approach to the role reflects not so much his own style as a deliberate exaggeration of Barrymore's vigorous performance. Since Laurel also gets to play both the upright doctor and the disreputable alter ego, the role gives him quite a bit to work with. Laurel did a solid job in this kind of parody feature, and it's interesting to watch him perform with an approach that's different from the style that's so familiar from all the great Laurel & Hardy features.

From Wikipedia: Keaton's "The Cameraman" is one of his very finest. The first picture he made after his newly inked contract with MGM, this is generally considered to be his last masterpiece. It is reminiscent of some of his early slapstick works: there's a pure anarchistic glee throughout that finally explodes in an incredible scene involving a monkey, a movie camera, and Keaton amidst a full-fledged Chinese gang war (!) that must surely go down as one of the most ambitious gags anyone has ever attempted. But the whole film is great fun and would make a wonderful double bill with "Steamboat Bill, Jr." though the MGM print of "The Cameraman" is far inferior to the United Artists' print of "Steamboat Bill, Jr." (or most other existing Keaton films for that matter). Regardless, a mediocre print is better than none at all and this movie deserves to be seen because it shows clearly all the Keaton's genius.
