Jack Kerouac publishes "On The Road".
Tail fins and length capture the imagination of Detroit's designers. One of its most extreme examples becames the Cadillac Eldorado, whose 200-inch wheelbase is twice that of the Nash Rambler.
The Bonneville model, with Pontiac's first fuel injection engine, is introduced.
One GM car is a huge success, the Chevrolet BelAir. An average BelAir sells for $2,749.
Buick engineers are once again busy redesigning body lines for the 1957 models, but this is a common practice with all manufacturers in the late 50ies.
The new Buicks look somewhat like a chopped, stretched out 1957 Chevy. They are low and long, with the Specials and Centurys being 208 overall while the Supers and Roadmasters are longer still, 215 inches overall.
Buick's high slanting fins are dominant but blended well with the rear roof pillars which are angled forward, allowing for a wrap-around back window.
The new 364 cubic inch Buick engines have 9.5:1 compression ratios, developing 250 horses at 4,400 rpm's or a 10:1 ratio developing 300 horses.
Ford's retractable hardtop debuts.
Aug. 31: Ford's Lincoln and Mercury Divisions are recombined. 3 days later Ford introduces to the public the Edsel, a new medium-priced car for 1958.
The Edsel will later become a car that few people would buy. By the time it will cease production in late 1959, the Ford Motor Company will have spent $250 million, and the English language will have a new synonym for the word "flop"!
The 1957 Chrysler reachs new levels of garishness.
Designed by Chrysler design chief Virgil Exner, they kindled the tailfin craze that will later reach its Gaudy pinnacle with the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado.
New Chrysler curved side windows expand the possibilities for automotive design.
In 1957, the last Nashes and Hudsons roll off the assembly lines and American Motors becomes the sole Division until 1970, when AMC will purchase the rights and facilities of Jeep from Kaiser-Willys.
The Hudson brand, that merged with Nash at the end of 1956, disappears at the end of 1957.

Hi-Res videos from our Collections are available on DVD, CD or directly in your inbox. Clips and movies can also be downloaded from our servers using a PW or uploaded by us to your FTP.
