The first TEMPO magazine went out on June 7, 1939 in Milan, Italy. The Editor was Arnoldo Mondadori and the Director was his son Alberto. There was also Indro Montanelli (capo redattore), Massimo Bontempelli, Lamberti Sorrentino, Salvatore Quasimodo, photographers John Philiphs (former photographer for "Life" magazine) and Federico Patellani. Inspired by the American "Life" and the German "Signal", TEMPO magazine adopted the formula "short texts-many photos", and it was the most innovative and important Italian magazine of its era. TEMPO magazine ceased publications on September, 8 1943.
The Funny War Italy declared war on France and England on June 10, 1940. During the first 6 months of the conflict the most important Italian cartoonists and illustrators began to work for TEMPO magazine creating the popularvignettes' pages.
Boccasile, Albertarelli, Manzi, Mondaini, Leporini, Bazzi, Camerini and others, set new artistic standards in the humoristic Fascist propaganda.
