1959

page44_3

American Motors introduces head restraint.

Cruise control is offered on 1959 Cadillacs.

Chevrolet introduces the El Camino, designed to combine big car comfort with the utility of a pickup truck.

This year Chevrolet introduces the Corvair.
With GM's management techniques, the car becomes the biggest-selling model in the nation and helps GM surpass Ford as the nation's biggest car maker. But its checkered safety record would also serve as the emblem of a rapacious auto industry, more interested in profits than customer safety. As the centerpiece of Ralph Nader's "Unsafe at Any Speed," published six years later, the Corvair will become rallying point in the movement for better built cars with more safety features. GM will discontinue the model in 1969.

Buick's prices drop slightly for 1959 with the most expensive Buick model selling for $4,300 and at year's end Buick is seventh in sales.
Buick's fins run the entire length of the car protruding out over the headlamps topped by a flat roof supported by thin, graceful pillars.
Buick's two millionth hardtop is sold this year.

The one millionth Opel sold gives GM an early start in the small car rush of the 60ies.

GM holds its first auto exhibit in Moscow.

Detroit Transmission produces its 10-millionth Hydra-Matic.

A new Defense Systems Division is formed to perform research directed toward the design and development of weapons systems and related activities. In 1962, it will be transferred to the Research Laboratories and re-named General Motors Defense Research Laboratories, with headquarters at Santa Barbara, California.

April 29: fifty-millionth Ford vehicle is built.

Aug. 24: Ford Motor Credit Company is formed.

Nov. 19: Ford announces it will discontinue the Edsel car line. Consequently Lincoln-Mercury Division is re-formed.

In accordance with a newly developed rear suspenction added on-to 1959 models, Pontiac extends the trend distance between the left and right weels, front and rear, to 64 inches.
This wider model became known as the "Wide Track" within the company, and this name will be used as a catch-phrase in later advertising campaign.
At first the advertising agency was against using a technical sounding catch-phrase such as "Wide Track" as the ad theme, but the results of the campaign will prove that it is a much more fruitful idea than was originally thought. The results give indication that the phrase "Wide Track" summoned up an image of speed with good road-holding ability.
The Pontiacs of the '50s had the image of being plain cars for the specific use of middle-aged school teachers. However, this image will be completely changed by the campaign and consequently the number of young owners will increase from 4.9% in 1958 to 6.4% in 1961.
The "Wide Track" advertising campaign will continue from 1959 to 1970 (and, with some light changes in the slogan phrases, up to nowadays...) with big results in the conquering the young owners market.
