Insecta, Coleoptera, Cholevidae, Leptodirinae, Canavesiella lanai Giachino, 1993 - Troglobite insect midium-sized (3,5-4 mm), actually the most specialized Leptodirinae of the Piemonte. It has been discovered by the author in 1993 during a systematic search on the north-western Piemontese territory
, in order to find the indicated cavities and examine their fauna.
With the discovery of this biological entity, has been created a new genus of Leptodirinae: Canavesiella. The cave "La Custreta"
opens in an uneven slope of the Punta d'Arbella, the first promontory on the left side of the Locana Valley (Valley of the Orco river). It is a fossil cavity situated in a marble lense
at about 1350 m above the sea level. The average temperature of the cavity is about 5°C degrees and the fauna form a cave biocenosis
of middle-high quota. Remarkable is the presence of two new species of Ischyropsalis
, an Opiliones genus that live also at an altitude of 2000 m.
With the discovery of C. lanai has been possible also give a sense to the rests of a Leptodirinae (previously found by A. Casale
during a deep excavation near Vistrorio, Valchiusella, that remains until now the only specimen) that has been abscribed to another new species
belonging to the new genus Canavesiella (C. casalei).
The photo below, performed by the author in 1995, has already been published in the "Encyclopaedia Biospeologica" on the cave fauna of the world (Société de Biospéologie - Moulis-Bucarest, 1998, pag. 1089, photo 1
).
