Brescia 1987-88 with 5 municipal nursery schools:  Guided Experiences of approaching Environment.

Our outdoor experiences were all followed by a video camera, not only to have a document, but mainly to watch things better. Children, even the 3 years old, seeing their animatore constantly shooting at trees, flowers,  mushrooms, stones and horse-traces, paid more attention and often “directed” me: “Copy that one, and that other! Do it!”

The Nature in the City

After visiting the trees near their school (they will be glad to meet some little boys, as generally used to see only cars!), the children go out and bring their “messages” to some of them. They choose the pine, the spruce, the cedar, the oak, the plane, and give them a drawing, with a little note written with the help of the teachers.

But in the city there are also parks, there is the little lake with ducks, geese, swans and water turtles, with even big fishes hidden in the bottom of the pond and the wild moorhen sitting on its eggs among a tiny bush of reeds. We saw it, and shot with the camera!

The River

How many are the voices of a river? We can listen - we must be very silent - the very small one of the little rill flowing in the field of grass. Different the creek streaming down among the rocks. But it we stop just a few from throwing stones in the water, we can lend our ears to many various voices, from the middle of the stream, from the whirls, from the thin brooklet coming just here into the big river. And all around dragon-flies in the air, little glittering beetles on the leaves and under the pebbles... Let's play, in our classroom, at being the river, laying down, no, not only one or two children, that's not enough, we need to be many, together, long, flowing, shaking, while someone else jump over from one bank to another...

The Horse

What do we know about horses? Let's imagine and play like Indians and Buffalo Bill. But here in the country maybe we can find real horse traces down the hill. Let's follow them!

Horses are terribly tall to climb on in the reality, it's a great emotion, and somebody is afraid and cries and refuse to ride. The most live the experience and later, in school, they help their timid friends carrying them on their own back. So the children live again that memorable ride one sunny morning on the top of the green hill.

The Peat-Moss Park

Children's drawings, after the walk into the bog, are quite full. The usual blank space between the two lines of the earth and the sky is completely filled by the reeds. They have represented themselves very small down near the water, and all around are tall reeds, and the sky is deep blue. On the very top of the sheet, near the sun, the cuckoo is flying. The saw it, and listened to it: “Cuckoo, cuckoo!” Just a little taller than themselves, they put me too, shooting about with the video camera.

The  Peat-Moss Park of Iseo is now a protected area, with many birds and animals living in the marshland. But it is hard to see them!
