Family Grave of
JEANNE VERSCHOOREN DURHAM (died 1939), HARRIET MILES DURHAM (died 1941), EDGAR
SYDNEY DURHAM (died 1986) ► City of
London Cemetery, Manor Park, Essex · Harriet’s name
(Harriet Georgina) and age (87) are incorrect - Edgar Sydney Durham’s son,
who had the grave refurbished in 2000 says: “it was with recollections sent
to me by my Aunt Lilly [Lilian Jane Durham Foster
Barclay] - I would not have thought she would have got her Mother’s name
wrong - and the age given on her Death Certificate that I got Monumental
Masons to refurbish the grave in the year 2000, to include her name and to
add that of my Father, Edgar. If you are able to read the inscription you
will see that my Father is not buried there, he was in fact cremated and his
ashes scattered in Surrey. At the time of
Harriet’s death in 1941 probably only five of her surviving children attended
her funeral - money was short, and it was agreed among the [children] that
she should be buried in my Mother’s grave, although in real life my Mother
disliked her for some reason. Money was so short that not one of the five
volunteered to add her name to the monument, and it was left to me to do so
59 years later! The grave will revert to City of London ownership in 2039 …” © 2013 The Durhams of Essex-Bexhill · although
Harriet’s Death Certificate only gives the name as simple “Harriet Durham”,
the misunderstanding might have arisen because Lilian
Jane was confusing her Mother’s name with that of her Sister, Henrietta
Georgina - Lilian Jane reported the death, but
she got her Mother’s age wrong, simply because she might not have known
exactly how old her Mother was, as often happens in these cases |

Mortimer Road,
Hackney, Middx · no. 23 not
found, but these are the low odd numbers |
160 Grange Road,
West Ham, Essex · no. 165 not
found – perhaps the houses were destroyed during the war -there are
apparently blocks of flats there now, but presumably the house looked like
this |
“Mahir” shop, 230 Green Street, West Ham, Essex · nos. 232-4, to
the left, seem to have been occupied by a bus garage 1906-60, and then by an
Asian shopping centre that was never built - presumably the house looked like
this · 234 Green
Street was Edgar Sydney’s home address in the 1901 census – his son says “My
Aunt Lily [Lilian Jane Durham] told us she was born
in Green Street, Upton Park, West Ham, opposite Boleyn Castle in 1901” -
Boleyn Castle has since been demolished, and the site has been the home of
the West Ham football ground since 1912 - the houses opposite are numbered
about 550, so 234 Green Street is quite some distance away - unless Green
Street has been radically renumbered, Boleyn Castle was some distance away
from 234 Green Street - the family must have moved "up the road"
between the census and Lilian Jane 's birth |

87 Bristol Road,
Forest Gate, Essex · this is the
address Edgar Sydney gave when he married in 1922 – his son says “I remember
this house up to 1939 – my Grandmother Harriet [Harriet Miles Durham] lived
there with her daughter, my Aunt Hetty (Henrietta
Georgina) and her family |
Off-licence, “Capel Arms", 16 Barwick
Road, Forest Gate, Essex · Edgar Sydney’s
son says (2013) “Note the changes and deterioration compared with D404 (previous page). The
shutters were not there when I last saw it some 12 years ago, when it was
owned by a family from the Indian sub-continent. The place now looks shabby!” |
