i

● Richard moved to Lambeth, Surrey – his brothers William II and Jacob I also lived there

in his children’s baptism records, he is described as an oilman, as was Jacob I DURHAMS IN LAMBETH

● Richard’s death took place in Mutford, Suffolk R/D, which includes Oulton, Suffolk, where he was living in the 1851 census

● Richard cannot be found in the 1841 census, and in the 1851 census his occupation is shown as “invalid

● so there is no census record showing his occupation(s), but in his various children’s baptism records, he is shown as “oilman” or “servant”

● in his daughter Sarah Ann’s marriage certificate, her father is shown as “Richard Durham, publican”

● his brother Jacob was, in later life, a publican

● in the list of Surrey Licensed Victuallers 1785-1903 online there is a Richard Durham, in 1825, in the parish of St George (St George the Martyr, Southwark), at the Old George pub, Lombard Street (now Leigh Hunt Street, there are no buildings there now, it was possibly bombed during the war)

● in the London 1839 Public House & Publican Directory, as listed in the London 1839 Pigots Directory, there is a Samuel Muggeridge at the Old George, 8 Lombard Street, Borough [Southwark]

● in the 1841 census there was a Richard Durham, age 30 (so born about 1807-11), publican, living at Garden Row, St George the Martyr (which is however over 1½ km away from where Lombard Street was), with an Elizabeth Durham, age 25 (so born about 1812-16), possibly, but not necessarily, his wife, and a William Durham, age 15 (so born about 1822-26), none of them born in Surrey – so, unless there was a serious mistake in the census record, this could hardly be Richard I and his family

● however, in his first 3 children’s baptism certificates, 1824 and 1826, Richard is shown as an oilman, living at the Marsh, Lambeth, Surrey, so he could hardly be the Richard Durham, publican, living in Lombard Street, Southwark in 1825, again over 1½ km away!

● nothing more is known about Ann East

POSSIBLE CHILDREN

BORN

● all the following were children of a Richard Durham and Ann, but it is not definite that this man was Richard I

born about 1792, Rickmansworth, HertsCENSUS

died Q3 1866, Watford, Herts R/DBMD, age 74

i

● in her baptism entry, Mary Ann was described as “daughter of Joseph and Martha Durham”

● in the 1851 census she was shown as Joseph’s daughter

● but in her marriage certificate with Alexander Davis, in her Father’s column she declared “illegitimate daughter of Martha Durham”

● if this is so, it seems strange that she only declared it in her marriage certificate – unless of course it was common knowledge in the parish

● it also means that she was not a “real” Durham, but to avoid having to make too many changes to this site, the Author has decided not to delete her from Joseph’s family

● as her husband was over 30 years older than she was, he could possibly have been considered her father, but had he been, he would presumably not have married her

● Alexander Davis was a lodger with Mary Ann’s father in the 1851 census, so it is presumed he married her, despite the difference in age

● nothing more is known about him

● this family is largely speculation

i

● no baptism can be found for Jacob Durham, although those for all his siblings have been

● the above baptism record is for Jacob William Darram, son of Joseph Darram and Martha – whereas “Darram” could easily be the clergyman’s mistake for “Durham”, the 2nd name “William” does not occur anywhere else

● the 2nd name “William” does would however be feasible, as it was the name of his grandfather (William Durham I)

● in the 1841 census, Jacob’s age was given as 7 (so making him born about 1834), in 1851 20 (1831), in 1861-71 he was not found, in 1881 45-6? (1835-6?), in 1891 56? (1835?), in 1901 66 (1835), and in 1911 78 (1833)

● in the marriage certificate, his age was given as 46 (so making him born about 1835), but he might not necessarily have given his true age

● his father was however given as “Joseph Durham, labourer”, which is correct

● the possible death record in 1912 gave his age as 79 (so making him born about 1833)

● his military records showed that he joined the army on 25 NOV 1853, age 20 (so born about 1833, but he might not necessarily have given his true age), that he was discharged in 1875, age 41 years and 1 month (so born about 1834), and that he served abroad for 11 years and 1 month, this period probably  covering the 1861-71 censuses

● Hannah possibly married (1?) Q3 1858, West Bromwich, Staffs R/D, Alfred Gardener [sic]

● nothing more is known about her

● in the 1861 census a Richard Durham was listed, boarder c/o Naylor family, Southwark, Surrey, 37 (so born about 1824), married but no wife present, general servant, born St Georges, Garden Road, Surrey – this may or may not be the correct man

● in 1820 Richard’s father, Richard I, was shown as living in Lambeth, Surrey

i

● in the marriage certificate Sarah Ann’s father was shown as “Richard Durham, publican”

● Richard cannot be found in the 1841 census, and in the 1851 census his occupation was shown as “invalid

● so there is no census record showing his occupation, but in his various children’s baptism records, Richard is shown as “oilman” or “servant”

● but his brother Jacob was, in later life, a publican

● so the fact that Sarah Ann showed her father as “publican” is possibly just a case of “constructive paternal occupation stating”

● otherwise, there might be some doubt as to whether these were the correct Sarah Ann and Richard Durham, but there was no other Richard Durham in the 1851 census whose occupation was publican

● on the other hand, in the 1861 census, Henry’s wife Sarah Ann is shown as “age 30, born St James, Middx”, both of which are correct for this Sarah Ann

● nothing more is known about Henry Aldridge

JOSEPH I’s CHILDREN:

IN THE 1861 CENSUS ONWARDS THERE ARE NO MALE DURHAMS BORN IN HERTFORDSHIRE (APART FROM JACOB I, DIED 1866, AND JACOB II, BORN about 1831, WHO DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE HAD ANY CHILDREN), WHICH MEANS THAT NONE OF THE SONS CAN HAVE HAD ANY DESCENT

RICHARD I’s CHILDREN:

NONE FOUND IN THE 1851 CENSUS ONWARDS (APART FROM SARAH ANNIGI III), WHICH MEANS THAT NONE OF THE SONS CAN HAVE HAD ANY DESCENT, UNLESS WILLIAM IV DID - NOTE THAT BOTH WILLIAM II AND RICHARD I SETTLED IN LAMBETH, SURREY
