· in D723, it’s difficult to tell whether they are sitting on the same chair, ie. whether the 2 photos were taken at the same time / in the same studio?

outside the Marine Bathing Pavilion, Margate, Kent?

· note Jeannette Josephine’s pointed shoes!

· the sign behind their heads says MARINE BATHING PAVILION – the only mention online of a Marine Bathing Pavilion is that at Margate, built 1926

· an online search on found the photograph on the right (no connection with the Durham family), taken in a similar position, entitled “Cicely & Gertie taken while walking on the Pavilion on Aug 24th 1927” (photo all rights reserved, no owner shown http://www.flickr.com/photos/martinisaac/2267488608/)

· both photos were possibly taken by professional photographers who roamed such tourist spots and photographed tourists for payment – the writing at the bottom of both photos is probably their mark, helping them to identify the customer when the photo was printed – the author’s father had a camera where it was possible to make a mark on the negative with a (what’s the name for that penlike instrument that doesn’t actually write? ironically I think they’re still used in the computer world)

► the wedding took place in West Ham, Essex Registration District

· as it was traditionally the bride’s parents who paid for the wedding and presumably provided the venue for the feasting, the photo was possibly taken at Lawrence Frederick’s home, Fourth Avenue, Manor Park, Essex

· Harriet Miles Durham’s great-niece’s comment: I'm sure I'm wrong about no. 13 possibly being Auntie Allie (Alice Louise Knott Paton, Lawrence Frederick’s cousin) - but the face looks familiar..... - Allie would have been 61, so probably not her as this woman looks younger than 61

Family grave of JEANNE VERSCHOOREN DURHAM, HARRIET MILES DURHAM, EDGAR SYDNEY DURHAM

► City of London Cemetery, Manor Park, Essex

· Harriet’s name (Harriet Georgina) and age (87) are incorrect - Edgar Sydney Durham’s son, who had the grave refurbished in 2000 says: “it was with recollections sent to me by my Aunt Lilly [Lilian Jane Durham Foster Barclay] - I would not have thought she would have got her Mother’s name wrong - and the age given on her Death Certificate that I got Monumental Masons to refurbish the grave in the year 2000, to include her name and to add that of my Father, Edgar. If you are able to read the inscription you will see that my Father is not buried there, he was in fact cremated and his ashes scattered in Surrey.

At the time of Harriet’s death in 1941 probably only five of her surviving children attended her funeral - money was short, and it was agreed among the [children] that she should be buried in my Mother’s grave, although in real life my Mother disliked her for some reason. Money was so short that not one of the five volunteered to add her name to the monument, and it was left to me to do so 59 years later! The grave will revert to City of London ownership in 2039 …”

· although Harriet’s Death Certificate only gives the name as simple “Harriet Durham”, the misunderstanding might have arisen because Lilian Jane was confusing her Mother’s name with that of her Sister, Henrietta Georgina - Lilian Jane reported the death, but she got her Mother’s age wrong, simply because she might not have known exactly how old her Mother was, as often happens in these cases
