NOTES:

no dates of birth are given

● the figures in the AGE column are calculated from the date of birth of the relative member of the family, assuming this is the same person

● no records of Smith apprentices from the next generation can be found (Smith is of course a very common names, so individuals are hard to find with any certainty)

● there were of course few sons in the next generation – many more daughters – and perhaps by this time they were better off and living more from the coal business

this is most likely William Smith I, because:

the date and age are realistic

although there are of course several William Smiths listed, this the only one apprenticed in the Greenwich/Deptford area when he would have been at a "reasonable" age

● the master's name, Matthew Burges[s] is important, as William's eldest daughter Elizabeth Ann married a James MATTHEW Burgess

● James Matthew Burgess was also apprenticed as a waterman in 1821, again to a Matthew Burgess, so there is a good chance that Matthew Burgess and James Matthew Burgess, both watermen, are related

WILL SUMMARY

FULL WILL

i

James Thomas bought the Fairby estate, in Hartley, Kent (http://www.hartley-kent.org.uk/), from the Treadwell family in the middle of the 19th century – a  little later he also purchased the lands owned by James Page, John Swaisland and Wm. Masters Smith, in all about 340 acres - but sold it on 25 March 1899 to Mr. A. E. Dobbs (according to one source), who transferred it to Sir James Timmins Chance (who bought it direct, according to the conveyance), one of the owners of the Smethwick glass firm – as James Thomas’ house in Eltham, Kent, was also called Fairby House, perhaps he named it after his country estate

the address of Fairby House is given in the THE TIMES – 9 JAN 1909 – THE ESTATE MARKET article below as 79 ELTHAM ROAD – it has not been possible to find 79 Eltham Road on Google - there is a Riverston School at nos. 63-9, comprising some what look like old large houses, but this is as near as possible it is to get – there are probably modern houses there today – there is however a Fairby Road on the north side of  Eltham Road, so perhaps this is where Fairby House stood

GRAVESEND JOURNAL - 17 MAR 1869

Incendarism - Sunday 7th March at 2 o'clock. Stack fire at Fairly [sic]. Farm belonging to Mr Smith. Large wheat stack destroyed in spite of efforts of Dartford Fire Brigade. Insured with Kent Fire Office. Reward of £25 offered for information leading to conviction of arsonist.

THE TIMES – 15 FEB 1904

LONGEVITY.- Mr. J. E. Durham, a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, writes from Fairby-house, Eltham-road, Lee, S.E., under date February 11-“You MAY be interested to know that Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Smith will pass their 72nd wedding day on the 14th day of this month, next Sunday. The venerable couple were married at St. Alphege’s Church, Greenwich, in 1832, by the Rev. John Masters, who died at the age of 97, three years ago, at Bennett-park, Blackheath village. Mr. Smith was 93 December 3 last, 1903. Mrs. Smith was 89 this last 2nd of January, 1904. The former was born 1810 and the latter 1815.”

THE TIMES – 27 OCT 1908 – DEATHS

THE TIMES – 9 JAN 1909 – THE ESTATE MARKET

An “upset price” of £1,000 has been fixed by Messrs. Dyer, Son, and Hilton, for the long leasehold detached residence at Blackheath known as Fairby House, 79 Eltham-road, which they will offer on the premises on Tuesday, January, 19th.

HENRY JAMES SMITH’s PHANTOM DAUGHTERS

● it was previously thought that Henry James had 2 daughters, who were only mentioned in wills, and about whom nothing else was known, “Mary” and “Elizabeth”

● by a process of elimination, it would appear that they must in fact be Mary Ann Woodgate Smith [Makey] and Elizabeth Sarah Smith [Payne]

● unfortunately Henry James himself in his will does not list his daughters individually, just mentioning his son William Victor and “all my children”

“MARY”

● a “Mary”, daughter of Henry James Smith, is mentioned in a codicil to his brother James Thomas Smith's will, dated 17 DEC 1901

● he mentions “seven daughters … now living in England” in the following order, which is not unfortunately the order of birth: Jane (Jane Ann), Emeline [sic] (Emmaline Jessie), Henrietta (Henrietta Josephine), Louisa (Louisa Jane), Mary (Mary Ann Woodgate?), Rose (Rosa Morris). Georgiana (Georgi(a)na Emma)

● there were (at least) 8 daughters, and in fact Elizabeth Sarah is missing (see below), sso “Mary” must be Mary Ann Woodgate

● but in another codicil, dated 21 APR 1904, her name is omitted, and only 6 daughters are mentioned, so perhaps she has died in the meantime, or emigrated, or Henry James has only just learnt of one of these events – the only certain event that had happened 1901-4 is that is that Mary Ann Woodgate’s husband Samuel Makey had probably died

● Mary Ann Woodgate Makey, after her marriage in 1866, is only found in the 1881 census and no other one, and no reliable death record can be found for her

● likewise Mary Ann Woodgate is also not mentioned in James Thomas Smith’s wife Jane Ann's will, dated 18 SEP 1905, whereas all the other sisters are

● a  death for Mary Ann Woodgate in Q1 1917, West Ham, Essex R/D, is quoted by a source on Ancestry, but is for a Mary A. W. Mackey, age 72 (so born about 1844-5), so must be treated with some caution, especially as there is Mary Ann Mackey in the 1911 census, living at West Ham, Essex, although it must be uncommon for there to be a Mary A. W. Makey and a Mary A. W. Mackey, both born within a couple of years of each other

“ELIZABETH”

● a hitherto unknown name, “Elizabeth Payne”, daughter of Henry James Smith, is mentioned in his brother James Thomas Smith's wife’s Jane Ann’s will, dated 18 SEP 1905

● but there was no mention of “Elizabeth Payne”, or of Elizabeth Sarah Smith, in her husband James Thomas Smith's will and codicils, dated 1896-1904

● she mentions 7 daughters in the following order, which is, apart from Jane Ann, fortunately in the order of birth: Jane Ann Read, then Elizabeth Payne, Rosa [Morris] Williams, Georgina [Georgi(a)na Emma] Williams, Louisa [Jane] Williams, Henrietta [Josephine] Bishop, Emmeline [Emmaline Jessie] Williams

● so only Mary Ann Woodgate is missing

● she lists a simplified form of the names, eg. Rosa Williams, rather than Rosa Morris Williams, so “Elizabeth Payne” can easily be short for, say, “Elizabeth Sarah Payne”

● as all the other girls are accounted for, other than Mary Ann Woodgate, and as “Elizabeth Payne” is in the correct position to be Elizabeth Sarah, assuming Jane Ann hadn’t made a mistake, Elizabeth Sarah must have married a man called Payne

● as Elizabeth Sarah (Smith) is last found in the 1851 census, not in the 1861 census onwards, and as she was born in 1842, she could have married before then, unless she died young 1851~61

● there is no marriage for an Elizabeth Sarah Smith with a Payne in the London Metropolitan Archives online records, where the father’s name is also listed, so where such a common name can only possibly be looked for, although her baptism is there

● likewise there is no record for someone of her age to have been buried in the same archives

● there is also no record in the 1861-1911 census of an Elizabeth (Sarah) Payne born about 1842 in Peckham

● so, always assuming she did marry someone called Payne, did they emigrate? (with such a common name, research is difficult)

● and was she presumably still alive in 1901, was she not mentioned in James Thomas Smith's will, as not one of the “seven daughters … now living in England”?

● but she was mentioned in Jane Ann Smith’s will, so still alive in 1905?

a  death for Mary Ann Woodgate in Q1 1917, West Ham, Essex R/D, is quoted by a source on Ancestry, but is for a Mary A. W. Mackey, age 72 (so born about 1844-5), so must be treated with some caution, especially as there is Mary Ann Mackey in the 1911 census, living at West Ham, Essex

notes from Jane Ann Smith’s grandson: (to follow)

I have now an overall picture of this amazing woman Jane Ann Smith Williams who crammed so much into her life - she had to be the black sheep or a renegade of the family, not backing off for anything or any one.

She was born and raised in Bristol became a student teacher or helper, then in her twenties went to Cape Town, South Africa,  and so I am told, became a Nurse during the Boer War [1899–1902]. She returned after the War, got married, and lived in Southampton, having five children in seven years from 1906 to 1913, the last one my Mother born in Bristol, then moved to Liverpool and, after the boys’ education, sent them all off to face WW2 in the Merchant Navy - one of them was a POW until the end of the war.

During all this she went back to Nursing the war veterans and was the owner and breeder of Greyhounds that raced in the Liverpool area. She then moved again with my Mother to a small farm in Kirk Deighton [Yorks] for a period of  time, then eventually to Wetherby [Yorks], and then went back to Nursing again at a Children's Hospital in Knaresborough [Yorks].

Somewhere amongst all this time Jane Ann Smith Ogilvie, she became a Catholic and changed her name to Agnes Mary Ogilvie, separated from her husband, and became a close friend of Mrs Mary Bonham Christie.

I know that my uncle George Edward Ogilvie was on Brownsea Island first due to the fact that when she [Mary Bonham Christie] bought it in 1927 she evicted around 340 people, but kept the gardener, odd job man and George Ogilvie the Boat Man, who would then have been 20ish.

Although the Island was strictly private and no one but no one was allowed to visit without an appointment for over 30 years it became a haven for Gran, George, Denis ,Ruby, Bob, Charles, Hetty my Mum, Dad, and sister Jane, as the photos show.

All this was over and done with by the time I was of an age to take part, all I am left with are hundreds and letters that I have only recently acquired, at the age of 64, and I do not recognise or am unable to explain 60% of them. But they seem to fall into categories:

The War, The Greyhounds, The Farm at Kirk Deighton, and Brownsea Island.

i

● a Gladys Williams, age 6, is listed in Charles Edward Williams’ household in the 1911 census, relationship “child”, possibly a grandchild, so it is not possible to know who her parents were – no baptism has been found online

● probate for Henrietta Hannah Worme Williams Childs (“Hettie”)’s will was granted in 1959 to a Gladys Winifred Williams, spinster, so it is possible that this was the same person

● there are 2 Gladys Winifred Williams in the birth index born in Bristol, Glos R/D, Q3 1903 and Q1 1905, so it is likely that it was the latter

● Mary Kathleen Ogilvie Swales’ son comments: "I remember Gladys as aunt Gladys, she was a retired  teacher and used to visit my Grandmother -  she also sent me books, etc. - my  sister says that she was taken in by her aunt Henrietta (Hettie) but that she was  the daughter of one of the other sisters, but she does not know who"

● she was born about 1905 - in 1905 none of Charles Edward Williams’ daughters were married,  except possibly Jane Ann Smith, and 3 of the daughters, including Jane Ann Smith, were 20 or over

● but if Henrietta (Hettie) was really her aunt and she was the daughter  of one of the other daughters, this only leaves 2 daughters who might have been  the mother, assuming she wasn’t the daughter of the son, James Thomas, who however might have emigrated  to South Africa by then

● a Gladys Winifred Williams worked as a teacher from 1925 onwards in  Bristol and Hackney, MiddxTEACHERS' REGISTRATION COUNCIL REGISTERS 1914-1948 (see PHOTOS), so this is possibly her

● a newspaper report about a court case over Charles Edward’s willWESTERN DAILY PRESS, BRISTOL, 27 FEB 1929 actually mentioned Gladys Winifred  Williams as grandchild of Charles Edward (see PHOTOS), and it would appear that she was given a special place in the inheritance

● Mary Kathleen Ogilvie Swales’ son also comments: "The last time I saw Gladys was in the late 1950’s, so she must have been about 54-55, and was as far as I know still single – at that time she lived at 157 Peterborough Road, Leyton, London E12”

● 157 Peterborough Road, Leyton, London E12 (Leyton, Essex) was Henrietta Hannah Worme Williams Childs (Hettie”)’s home – perhaps Gladys Winifred inherited it from her after the latter’s death in 1958

● Mary Kathleen Ogilvie Swales’ daughter comments: “Gladys always lived with Hettie, and when Hettie died she continued at the same address - the last time I  was in contact with her was just after our Mother died in 1983, that made Gladys 77, still single at the time – we never heard from her again”

i

● there is some doubt as to whether this is the correct marriage, as

- Frederick William gives an address in Erith, whereas in the 1911 census the Read family was living in Sidcup, Kent

- he gives as his father Edmund Read, time keeper, whereas the latter is referred to as grocer everywhere else

- in the 1911 census, he gives mechanic fitter as his occupation, in the marriage certificate foreman engineer

- on the other hand, his age in the marriage certificate, 26, would make him born about 1890

- and one of the witnesses was Jane Ann Read, his mother’s name

● as there were no other suitable Read/Copping marriages in this period, either or both of these children might be theirs
