THE ARGUS, MELBOURNE – 11 MAR 1887 – SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE

[with the ship] Carlisle Castle, leaving London Dec 14, Mr and Mrs F. Jeffery, family (two) and servant

There is another mention of a Mr F. Jeffery from London and Manchester, contributing 'a bewitching display of ladies' lingerie' to the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition in 1888, which was somewhat similar to the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London - as  Frederick was described as a manufacturer and/or importer in the Will documents, perhaps he went specially to show his lingerie

● Ada Jane must have emigrated to Australia 1901~13

● New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists show:

“K Jeffery, age18 (so born about 1884), born London, Port of Departure London, Port of Arrival Sydney, New South Wales, Voyage Arrival Date 30 May 1902, Vessel Name Arcadia”

listed among the seamen, not passengers – against her name there is a job title, difficult to read, “writer & GS” (general seaman / staff / steward(ess) / secretary / service? – if it’s “secretary”, “writer” might mean clerk, even an early name for “typist” – however, a list of abbreviations in merchant seamen’s records on the National Archives site gives “general servant” for GS), but directly underneath various stewardesses are mentioned, so there were obviously female members of the crew – family sources claim that this is her, but this remains to be proved – if it is her, it would explain why she does not appear in any passenger list leaving the UK

● however, in one of the marriage notices, below, it says “recently arrived from England” – whether someone who had been in Australia for 11 years (1902-13) can be described as recently arrived from England” is debatable

● a newspaper reports the above death, no forename specified, "Parent/Spouse: Kathleen May" - could it be her herself, assuming Arthur Charles Campbell remarried in 1925 – she is not in the electoral register after 1919

● Arthur Charles Campbell’s father was Curate of Frant in 1873

Frant is a village and parish in Sussex, located on the Kentish border, about 5 km south of Tunbridge Wells, Kent – the parish is partly in Sussex and partly in Kent – so “Tunbridge, Wells Kent” as birthplace is more or less correct

● the birth record is for Arthur Charles C. Thorold, the baptism and death for Arthur Charles Campbell Thorold, but all subsequent records refer to Charles Campbell Throrold

● there is considerable material online about Arthur Charles Campbell – some of it will be eventually included here – apparently he was descended from Sir John Thorold, 9th Baronet, who married Jane Hayford, hence Hayford in his son’s name

● a Chas C. Thorold, age 32 (so born about 1874), single, clerk, emigrated to Australia in 1906, and a C. C. Thorold arrived that year in MelbourneONLINE PASSENGER LISTS

● assuming it was Kathleen May who died in 1922, he married (2) 31 DEC 1925, All Saints Church, Greensborough, Victoria, Australia, Jessica Isabel Marjory WereBMD, daughter of Francis Wellington WereTHEPEERAGE.COM, NEWSPAPER, born 1882, Prahran, Victoria, AustraliaBMD, died 21 JAN 1954WILL, East Malvern, near Melbourne, Victoria, AustraliaBMD (a newspaper notice says 31 JAN)
