La Fabbrica Disney ha preso una rincorsa di circa tre anni (dall82 all85 circa) ed ora è lanciata a piena velocità nel ritmo produttivo: sono già in cantiere numerosi progetti: (uscito sugli schermi per il Natale 97), Aida (che Verdi ci aiuti e sostenga!), Mulan (una fiaba cinese) e Fantasia 2 sono solo alcuni esempi.
Alla luce di queste considerazioni, la traduzione Disneyana vacilla e scricchiola per le molte incongruenze che inevitabilmente allontanano il personaggio di Baxter da quello di Hugo.
Ma in realtà non è forse nemmeno giusto pretendere lassoluta fedeltà al romanzo, poiché la Disney ha come target principale i bambini ed un adattamento è necessario per creare un prodotto divertente, dipinto con una tavolozza di colori schiariti e fondamentalmente sgombro dalle ombre gotiche che aleggiano invece sul romanzo; ci viene così presentato un Quasimodo fin da subito sensibile, assetato di contatto umano e ben disposto verso il prossimo, desideroso di dare, di ricevere e con lo spirito rivolto alla speranza.
La malvagità sistematica del personaggio è molto ben rappresentata, ma purtroppo riflette solo un aspetto del Claude Frollo di Hugo " il cui fuoco interiore ardeva a volte nel suo sguardo al punto da far sembrare il suo occhio un buco aperto nella parete di una fornace (2) "; i dilemmi, le torture spirituali, il lacerante dolore derivante dal crollo dei propri ideali di fronte ad una cosa semplice come la danza di una giovane zingara non emergono sufficientemente dal personaggio Disneyano.
