Insecta, Coleoptera, Carabidae, Trechinae, Duvalius carantii (Sella, 1874) - Known from the end of the nineteenth century, it is a troglobite Trechinae that live in most of the south-western Piemonte, from the Maudagna to the Vermenagna Valleys. It has been described by Sella on specimens picked up in the subterraneans of the Certosa di Pesio; then it has been found also in the lower Camoscere Cave and in the Caudano Caves. More recently it has been found in other artificial subterraneans, in the Vernante Fortress, where it is so well adapted that it's possible find it in the winter, on the contrary that in the natural cavities. In this place the author has documented a predation of this Carabidae captured by a troglobite spider of the genus Troglohyphantes. It is a Duvalius quite little (size of the body: about 4 mm), that like other representatives of the genus preserves cicatritial traces of eyes. Recently (June-July 2000) the author found specimens of this insect in slate mines near Valdieri and in little caves in the Grande Valley of Palanfrè. In the lower and higher Camoscere Caves, it share the habitat with the most specialized Trechinae of the Piemonte: Agostinia launoi.
