David Hasselhoff: News 2000

19 Dec 2000

1 Dec 2000 David Hasselhoff and Michele Lee will light the 2000 Broadway Holiday Tree. The lighting ceremony will take place in Wednesday, December 13 at 5:15pm in Duffy Square.
In addition to Hasselhoff and Lee, cast and company members from virtually every Broadway and off-Broadway show will be on hand to celebrate and flip the lighting switch. The Times Square BID Kidz, a brand new musical theater company made up of young performers from The New Dance Group Arts Center musical theater program, will perform holiday standards during the ceremony. At the end of the excitement, there will be a moment of silence in remembrance of members of the theater community who have died in the past year.
The Broadway Holiday Tree is presented by Theatre Development Fund, The League of American Theatres and Producers and The Times Square Business Improvement District (BID). This year the tree is a 25-foot white spruce decorated with colored holiday lights and ornaments representing every show currently playing on Broadway and off-Broadway.

It's down to the last days of disco for Saturday Night Fever.

(...) In other Broadway news, tune junkies better hurry if they want to see former Baywatch-er and ocassional German pop star David Hasselhoff pulling double duty in Jekyll & Hyde. Hasselhoff has informed producers that he intends to leave the stage show at the end of his 12-week run January 7. However, talks are underway to bring the Hasselhoff musical to the tube via a live telecast with the Broadway Television Network. (...)

Archerd: Remembering a Hollywood hero
By Army Archerd, Daily Variety Senior Columnist

(...) ``If my career had died after last night (Tuesday) I would have died a happy man,'' David Hasselhoff told me the morning after his Broadway bow in ``Jekyll & Hyde'' at the Plymouth. Well, he was very much alive and happy -- and already thinking about a second musical, ``Zorro.'' Hasselhoff was enjoying praises for his premiere at the post-party at the Russian Tea Room. Those applauding included Cheryl Ladd (who is also bowing on B'way, in ``Annie Get Your Gun''), Lorenzo Lamas and his mom Arlene Dahl, and Pierre Cossette. (...)

5 Nov 2000 David Hasselhoff
by Melissa Rose Bernardo

There are a lot of roles David Hasselhoff is destined to play, but The Body may not be one of them. "Pierre Cossette called me--he's doing a musical on Jesse Ventura. I started laughing," he says. "I said, 'I'm skinny! You'll never see me in tights.' I had a hard enough time wearing a bathing suit."But right now he's got not one but two roles to content himself with: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the long-running Frank Wildhorn-Leslie Bricusse hit musical. Hasselhoff, best known as the brain behind Baywatch and the guy who talked to the car on Knight Rider, is making his Broadway debut. He's already a huge musical star in Europe (they adore him in Germany!), and he's been waiting a heck of a while to show American audiences his stuff. Pardon the pun, but this is his moment.

31 Oct 2000 Dr. 'Jekyll' & Mr. Hunk

[From the New York Daily News: 10/30/2000]

21 Oct 2000 DAVID HASSELHOFF partied at Joe Allen after his "Jekyll & Hyde" opening. Admitting he'd been a semi-nervous wreck onstage, he said: "I caught a look at the audience and became petrified. I literally froze. At one point I'm supposed to tear my shirt and forgot to. Another point I'm supposed to ruffle my hair and forgot to."
His wife, taking pictures of the party, told him how great he was. Hasselhoff, easy, friendly, fun-loving, wearing his Walter Winchell-like snap-brim gray fedora, said: "I just hope we can sell tickets."

20 Oct 2000 Opinions of David's Fans at Jekyll&Hyde

David is doing FINE!
I happen to catch part of the show last night. I was in the city on business and couldn't resist the temptation.(we "jekkies" are addicts). Understand I only saw a few scenes from backstage, but David is doing very well, better than others, considering this is his 3rd performance. His experience indeed shines through.
First of all he looks terrific as Dr. Jekyll! (that's important). Very much the tall dashing English upper crust sort. His song, "Take Me As I Am" with Emma (Andrea), was done with great style and compassion. His chemistry with Andrea seems very natural (that's important). He seemed to struggle with the "Transformation" scene, but that will come in time. His "This is the Moment" was good, but I'm sure he will get vocally more comfortable as he goes along.
The audience was very responsive to him. His "Hyde" is surprisingly good! I say this because it is very hard to switch roles so quickly and do it well. I'm sure he will dig deep into himself and find that extreme "evil" side. I wish I was able to stay longer, but had to catch a train for home I've been around this show and these people before it hit Broadway and it always interesting to see the new "stars" fill the shoes... or in this case "wear the wig" (David's wig is good and he handles it pretty well).
This is probably one of the most challanging roles on Broadway... making "Phantom" & "ValJean"(LeMiz) seem like "a day at the beach".
He called his mom directly after the show from backstage and a few "jekkies" joined in the conversation to mom. Very sweet. Every first show has it's "special moments" and David's was no exception. During one scene David left the stage, but his mike was still on. He was overheard by the audience as saying "I have to go pee!" So... there you have it! A moment, I'm sure DH will remember on Opening night !
Stay tuned for more reviews as time goes by.

19 Oct 2000 Opinions of David's Fans at Jekyll&Hyde

DAVID WAS WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was very lucky to have seen David on Broadway Tuesday night in his first performance as Jekyll and Hyde. He was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!!

His voice was the most powerful I have ever heard it...the sweetest it ever sounded. His acting the best he has ever done! He had every emotion with him on that stage, passion, anger, fear, love...all of them and he used them well!! David and the rest of the cast received a well earned standing ovation after the show. This bought a big smile to David's face! :)
I can honestly say it was one of the most fantastic night's of my life. I love Broadway musicals but this was extra special! David made it special by all of the work and energy and talent he put into the show. If there is any way at all that you can see him in this musical please, DO IT!!!! Trust me. You do not want to miss David in the greatest performance of his life!

23 Sep 2000 News and Views By Jeannie Williams

DOUBLE LIFE: David Hasselhoff has jumped into rehearsals for Broadway's hit Jekyll and Hyde and is wondering what he has gotten into with this huge double role.
"My wife (Pamela Bach) came up, I said, " Get up here. I'm going from highest highs to lowest lows." I'll come back to my room ad go 'Oh my God, why did I do this'"
He puts his hands over his face, but it's (mostly) mock horror for the Baywatch icon. "I know I can do it, and I'm surprising a lot of people. It's just a horrific amount of material. I think after my five month of this (opening Oct. 31, Halloween), I'm going to go out to the writer's house and kill him! But it's a challenge, and life is about recreating yourself.
"But I'm have the time of my life, New York for me is hysterical. I have a scooter, I scoot around, I get , "yo, Knight Rider, yo Baywatch, yo, David, where's the babes" Everybody says something. It's been a really nice welcome.

1 Sep 2000 Yesterday (30 Aug 2000) David called us and ask us about the new "looking for freedom-version". He want to sing this song while he comes to the 10 years show about the "wall falling down" (BERLIN). Jack White wanted that David perform a new version of Looking for Freedom. But David can't come to Germany while he is on Broadway. Because he is on stage every day (except Monday).
In the last days he learn with a singing-teacher to become the last touch as a opera singer.

Last week David was in Hawaii. To look at the shooting from Baywatch Hawaii. There is all ok. That's the last time for David to travel Hawaii this year.

Moreover David told us that the new CD takes time. David has only three songs recording yet now. The CD comes out in next springtime... He think so!! (he hope so!)

Things are great here. Currently recording an album in English and Spanish. I am preparing to close out my appearance on Baywatch--maybe one more episode. I know it's sad, but 10 years is enough sand in my ears, and I'm still shaking water out of my ears. I still love the show, but now it's time to move on to other things...probably Broadway! Sorry the new series and the Dieter film didn't work out, but when God closes a window, He also opens a door--so there are always new things to be excited about. Just finished a CBS tv movie in Canada called One True Love--kind of like Sleepless in Seattle.

Mike Myers has exited starring in the UNIVERSAL Pictures comedy DIETER, resulting in the studio filing a breach-of-contract suit against the actor. "The question from the beginning has always been, can Sprockets move from beyond a sketch into being a full-length feature film, and, despite my greatest efforts, I have yet to achieve that." DIETER was set to star Myers, Jack Black, David Hasselhoff, and Will Ferrell.

18 May 2000 Hasselhoff on dance card for Myers 'dieter'
LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- "Baywatch" leading man David Hasselhoff will star opposite Mike Myers in Imagine Entertainment/Universal Pictures' "Dieter" (a k a "Sprockets"). Hasselhoff will play himself in the film, which will mark the feature directorial debut of art director Bo Welch. The script is being kept tightly under wraps, but it is understood that the story revolves around Dieter (Myers), who co-hosts Germany's most successful talk show alongside his monkey. "Sprockets" even surpasses syndicated series "Baywatch" in popularity, which irks Hasselhoff, the beach show's star and executive producer. When the "Sprockets" monkey is kidnapped, Dieter has no choice but to fold his show and embark on a search for the animal; his suspicions about the identity of the kidnapper lead him to America. Imagine chairman Brian Grazer will produce the project, which Myers co-wrote with Michael McCullers and Jack Handey. "Dieter" is based on a character created by Myers; the actor subsequently brought the eccentric German host to prominence during his run on "Saturday Night Live" from 1989-94. The project will shoot this summer. Hasselhoff, repped by CAA, most recently played himself in the Kevin Allen-directed "The Big Tease," distributed by Warner Bros. last year. Hasselhoff's "Baywatch" first aired in 1989 and was renamed "Baywatch Hawaii" this past season. The popularity of the show also spawned "Baywatch Nights," which ran from 1995-97.

[From Yahoo! News]

Hasselhoff to co-star in Myers' 'Dieter'
Big-in-Germany star David Hasselhoff has signed on to star as himself in Mike Myers new film, "Dieter." "Dieter" is based on characters Myers created for his "Saturday Night Live" skit "Sprockets," in which Dieter and his Teutonic friends discuss avant-garde films and are exhorted to touch Dieter's monkey. The Hollywood Reporter said the plot of "Dieter" revolves around Hasselhoff's jealousy that the title character's talk show has eclipsed the popularity of "Baywatch." Dieter's monkey is kidnapped, and as a result, the host must abandon his show and travel to American in search of his missing simian.

Hasselhoff Set For 'Sprockets'
Following up on rumors last week that suggested David Hasselhoff might be coming on board Mike Myers' Sprockets film to play the flick's villain comes word that, yes, he is. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hasselhoff will play himself in the film. The trade reports that the film's story may have the actor jealous of the success of the Sprockets TV show in Germany, even beating out Baywatch. He has Dieter's monkey kidnapped and brought to America. Dieter must shut down his show and journey to the U.S. to recover the only thing he cares about. The film's script was written by Mike Myers with Michael McCullers and Jack Handey. Production is set to start this summer.

24 Apr 2000 Hasselhoff's upcoming series in trouble?
NEW YORK (AP) -- Will David Hasselhoff be blown out of the water twice in a row? Hasselhoff, whose character bowed out after an explosion on last season's Baywatch finale, hoped to star as a globe-trotting sleuth in the syndicated series Double Cross beginning in the fall. But TV Guide quoted industry sources in its April 29th issue as saying the show is in jeopardy. The magazine said international sales, which often generate half of the revenues of an hour-long series, have been weak. Hasselhoff, 47, left Baywatch after playing lifeguard Capt. Mitch Buchannon for 10 years. His role in the tongue-in-cheek Double Cross was described as "suave guy who drinks champagne and romances pretty women."

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - The "Dream" appears all but over for Roger Moore now that production has stopped on his rookie syndicated action drama "The Dream Team".
Taping on the low-rated series was halted several weeks ago while, sources said, producer BKS Entertainment decided whether to pursue the series. Now that the company has David Hasselhoff in its fold for "AKA Picasso", the prognosis is bleak.
Moore played the leader of an elite squadron of intelligence agents. The show debuted on Sept. 25., and it has averaged just a 0.9 Nielsen rating in national households.
