In
the last years the number of big bands has steadily decreased. The
reasons are easy to find: the people’s change of taste, the high
costs to run them and a cultural policy that has promoted other
projects. RAI is a famous example of this trend, they have dramatically
cut down on the number of musicians. There are also cases that take a
different direction, but they involve a few professional musicians and
it seems impossible for the amateurs to participate actively.
We are suggesting an experience that is trying to find a solution to
the problem, using modern technology and, above all, the personal
enthusiasm. Through internet contacts and musical forums we have found
several musicians who have agreed to join the virtual big band.
We’ve made a list where the musicians appear according to the
instrument they play.
Everybody records the PDF part and the orchestral midi file they got by email.
Nowadays the home-recording technology guarantees very good results.
Practically you have to play your part listening to the midi file
through the headphones and meanwhile record your performance and send
it as email attached to the author of the song, who will look after the
editing (sinchronizing the tracks, adding the effects, chosing the
volumes).
Technically it works and it is similar to what happens in a recording
studio. It’s a very cheap solution based on “all for one
and one for all” and with little effort the musician can actively
play in a big band, what would be impossible otherwise. This experience
is very useful for the authors too, who can listen to their songs
played by a big band. We hope that a project that was born as mainly
virtual will be able to produce practical things like the friendship
among the members or the exchange of opinions and experiences. There
are three generations that work side by side, beginners next to
appreciated professionists: this is another beautiful aspect of the
music that doesn’t have any borders.
