Face to face with Carlo Trevisan

1. Introduce yourself in a few words? What is your path?

Carlo Trevisan. Profession: dreamer.

Painting is the means to give life to my emotions, my ideas, my dreams. I live in Italy, dividing my time between the sea of Versilia in Tuscany and the wonderful city of Verona.

I have been painting for over 30 years, without ambitions and false steps, without fuss and in the silence of my home-atelier in an ancient Tuscan village.

Thousands of artworks and my paintings are now scattered all over the world. I give small emotions that everyone can hang on his wall at home and live every day continuously.

Presentarsi in poche parole? Qual è il suo percorso?

Carlo Trevisan. Professione:  sognatore. La pittura è il mezzo per dare vita alle mie emozioni, alle mie idee, ai miei sogni. Vivo in Italia dividendomi tra il mare della Versilia in Toscana e la meravigliosa città di Verona. Dipingo da oltre 30 anni, senza ambizioni e falsi passi, senza clamore e nel silenzio della mia casa-atelier in un antico borgo toscano. Migliaia di opere realizzate e miei dipinti ormai sparsi in tutto il mondo. Regalo piccole emozioni che ognuno può appendere alla sua parete di casa e vivere ogni giorno continuamente.

2. How was your vocation as an artist born?

Since the early years of school, it was easy for me to draw. In elementary school I used to draw maps of Italy and Europe for geography and history lessons. In middle school I learned perspective, chiaroscuro, shadows, oil and tempera painting in a personalized program.

During the 15 years of scouting I was interested in many creative and artistic projects in Italy.

Then with the technical studies of Surveyor and Engineering I abandoned everything to devote myself to the real architectural design and urban planning following the family vocation for many generations. But in the 90's my friendship with a old painter Serafino Beconi made me rediscover the greatness of art and I understood that this had to be my way. I started like everyone else with group exhibitions, on the street, outdoors and then gradually with personal exhibitions and more important exhibitions.

At my first solo shows I sold almost everything. I won some awards. The road was the right one.

Come è nata la sua vocazione di artista?

Fino dai primi anni di scuola mi era facile disegnare. Alle scuole elementari disegnavo carte geografiche dell'Italia e dell'Europa per le ore di geografia e storia. Alle scuole medie in un programma personalizzato imparai subito la prospettiva, il chiaro/scuro, le ombre, la pittura ad olio e a tempera. Nei 15 anni di scoutismo mi sono  interessato a tanti progetti creativi e artistici in Italia.

Poi con i studi tecnici di geometra e ingegneria abbandonai tutto per dedicarmi alla vera progettazione architettonica e urbanistica seguendo la vocazione di famiglia da molte generazioni.

Ma negli anni ‘90 l'amicizia con il pittore Serafino Beconi mi fece riscoprire la grandezza dell'arte e capii che quella doveva essere la mia strada. Ho iniziato come tutti con mostre collettive, per strada, all'aperto e poi via via con personali e mostre di maggior rilievo. Alle mie prime mostre personali vendevo quasi tutto. Vinsi alcuni premi. La strada era quella giusta.

3. How does a painting session take place? What is the process of creating one of your works?

I paint every day. The subjects of the paintings are many because there are many ideas in your mind that you want to give life to, but the time and the days are only 24 hours and you can not achieve everything.

I have been painting for years now mainly with oil paints. I carry out several works simultaneously, respecting the drying times.

I am very fast, in my mind I already know how a painting should be completed, what are the colors, the shades, the composition of the subjects/objects.

Painting is taking possession of my time and my being. It is a continuous and relaxing meditation.

During the execution of a painting all attention is focused on that canvas until it is completed. But then, once it is finished, you detach and start a new painting, a new experience, a new emotion.

Come si svolge una sessione di pittura? Qual è il processo di creazione di una delle sue opere?

Dipingo tutti i giorni. I soggetti dei dipinti sono tanti perchè tante sono le idee nella mente a cui si vuole dare vita, ma il tempo e le giornate sono solo di 24 ore e non si riesce a realizzare tutto. Dipingo ormai da anni prevalentemente con i colori ad olio. Porto avanti più opere contemporaneamente, rispettando i tempi di asciugatura. Sono molto veloce, nella mia mente io so già come deve completarsi un dipinto, quali sono i colori, le sfumature, la composizione dei soggetti/oggetti. Il dipingere è rientrare in possesso del mio tempo e del mio essere. è una meditazione continua e rilassante. Durante la esecuzione di un dipinto tutta l'attenzione viene concentrata su quella tela finché non è completata. Ma poi, una volta finito, ci si stacca e si inizia un nuovo dipinto, una nuova esperienza, una nuova emozione.

4. What are your artistic inspirations, influences and references?

Life. Every day I experience emotions, sometimes intense, sometimes superficial. Yet every situation manages to suggest color, scenarios, situations.

I can watch a movie and an idea is born, sometimes a cartoon suggests a painting: I love Walt Disney, I grew up with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

I find the painting of the past all particularly interesting, from the Renaissance (I grew up in the city of Piero della Francesca) to the contemporary one, I'm talking about Banksy, Hirst, Murakami, Hockney, Currin, Sherman.

And then Dali, Hopper, Magritte and Chagall.

Quali sono le tue ispirazioni artistiche, influenze e riferimenti?

La vita. Ogni giorno vivo emozioni a volte intense a  volte superficiali. Eppure ogni situazione riesce a suggerire colore, scenari, situazioni. Posso guardare un film e nasce una idea, a volte un cartone animato suggerisce un dipinto: adoro Walt Disney, sono cresciuto con Topolino e Paperino. Ritengo la pittura del passato tutta particolarmente interessante, dal Rinascimento (sono cresciuto nella città di Piero della Francesca) a quella contemporanea, parlo di Banksy, Hirst, Murakami, Hockney, Sherman.

5. What is your relationship with the themes that emerge in your paintings?

A dreamy life full of positivity. You express what you live and dream, otherwise I wouldn't be a true artist. In my paintings there is always a subject/object that expresses a story, a situation, an emotion. Even a simple isolated tree tells something. Or an animal that looks at us and wants to tell us something. Behind each of my paintings there is a story to be told, and it is up to the observer to enter into that context and, with his or her imagination, give course to the story. I only give the stimulus, the "once upon a time" .... "then the viewer of the painting starts with his own sensations and emotions.

Qual è il suo rapporto con i temi che emergono nei suoi quadri?

Una vita sognante e piena di positività. Si esprime quello che si vive e si sogna, altrimenti non sarei un vero artista. Nei miei dipinti c'è sempre un soggetto/oggetto che esprime una storia, una situazione, una emozione. Anche un semplice albero isolato racconta qualcosa. Oppure un animale che ci guarda e ci vuole raccontare qualcosa.

Dietro ogni mio dipinto c’è una storia da raccontare, Sta all’osservatore entrare in quel contesto e con la sua immaginazione dare corso alla storia. Io dò solo lo stimolo, il « c’era una volta…. », poi chi guarda il dipinto parte con le sue sensazioni ed emozioni.

6. What are the meanings of the colors you use? Do you want to convey a message?

I almost always use bright colors, full of light, air.

In my backgrounds I almost always use Payne's gray, it manages to give the painting a dreamy and oneiric atmosphere.

A clean space in which the eye and therefore the mind can run away without obstacles and hindrances.

Quali sono i significati dei colori che usate? Vuoi trasmettere un messaggio?

Utilizzo quasi sempre colori vivaci, pieni di luce, di aria.

Nei miei sfondi utilizzo quasi sempre il grigio di Payne, riesce a  dare al dipinto una atmosfera sognate e  onirica. Uno spazio pulito in cui l’occhio e quindi la mente può fuggire via senza ostacoli ed impedimenti.

7. What is the best advice you have received as an artist?

I have received a lot of bad advice!

For all of them I should have been an engineer and build and not get lost behind my "color dreams".

But I made the right choice and today I am happy with how I have been able to realize my artistic projects and where I have arrived step by step. Many great collectors have bought my paintings, especially in the U.S.If I were to do a retrospective of mine it would not be in Italy, but in the U.S., there are my most important pieces and the real collectors.

There are plans for this idea.  

Qual è il miglior consiglio che ha ricevuto come artista?

Ho ricevuto tanti sconsigli ! Per tutti dovevo fare l’ingegnere e costruire e non perdermi dietro i miei « sogni a colori ». Ma ho fatto la scelta giusta e oggi sono contento di come sono riuscito a realizzare i miei progetti artistici e dove sono arrivato passo dpo passo. Molti grandi collezionisti hanno acquistato dei miei dipinti, soprattutto inegli Stati Uniti. se dovessi fare una mia retrospettiva non sarebbe in Italia, ma negli Usa, là sono i miei pezzi più importanti e i veri collezionisti. C’è in progetto questa idea.  

8. Can you tell us something about yourself that people might be surprised to hear?

In 2016, thanks to the art gallery Carré d'Artistes in Philadelphia, I was featured in a major project for a major new hotel. Americans are not normal people, they always think big. They asked me 216 oil paintings to decorate their hotel rooms.

Delivery time: 2 months! Thanks to the organization and logistics of art gallery, we managed to deliver the 216 new paintings in the agreed time. I lived the most extraordinary 2 months of my life. It was the proof that painting is my life. And painting is a zen breathing that makes me feel good about myself and others. (Read the article on CNN.com)

Puoi dirci qualcosa di te che la gente potrebbe essere sorpresa di sentire?

Nel 2016 grazie alla galleria Carré d'Artistes di Filadelfia sono stato protagonista di un importante progetto per un importante nuovo hotel. Gli americani non sono gente normale, loro pensano sempre in grande. Mi hanno chiesto 216 dipinti ad olio per arredare le loro stanze d’albergo. Tempo di consegna : 2 mesi! Grazie all’organizzazione e logistica della galleria siamo riusciti a consegnare i 216 nuovi dipinti nel tempo prestabilito. Ho vissuto i 2 mesi più straordinari della mia vita. E’ stata la riprova che la pittura è la mia vita. E dipingere è una respirazione zen che fa stare bene con me  stesso e gli altri. (Leggi l'articolo su CNN.com)

9.Why is it so important to have art in your home?

A painting on the wall is a window to look through whenever you need to relax your mind, to seek an escape, to feel something real.

A window in which to enter with the joys and sorrows of the day and find the right dimension to find yourself and your time.

A painting is a mirror and like Alice in Wonderland everyone can enter and change.

A color is emotion, more colors are harmonies of the soul that stimulate our eye and reach the mind. and this makes us alive.

Perché è così importante avere arte in casa?

Un dipinto alla parete è un finestra dove guardare ogni volta che si ha bisogno di rilassare la mente, di cercare una fuga, di provare qualcosa di vero. Una finestra in cui entrare con le gioie e i dolori della giornata e trovare la giusta dimensione per ritrovare se stessi e il proprio tempo.

Un dipinto è uno specchio e come Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie tutti posso entrare e cambiare.

Un colore è emozione, più colori sono armonie dell’animo che sollecitano il nostro occhio e arrivano alla mente. e ciò ci rende vivi.

10. A story you'd like to share? 

A simple painting of a little bear with a paper on its chest and a red heart drawn on it.

It was the protagonist of an episode that moved me and the staff of Carré d'Artistes.

It was commissioned by a lady from California, without telling us the reason.

The painting arrived on time at a California clinic just before her husband came out of surgery for a heart operation.

It was the first thing she saw on his bedside table. We all cried....

Una storia che vorresti condividere? 

Un semplice dipinto di un orsetto con un foglietto sul petto e un cuore rosso disegnato. Esso è stato protagonista di un episodio che ha emozionato me e lo staff di Carré d'Artistes. Esso fu commissionato da una signora della California, senza però dirci la motivazione. Il dipinto arrivò in tempo a destinazione in una clinica californiana appena prima che il marito uscisse dalla sala operatoria per un intervento al cuore. Fu la prima cosa che il marito vide sul suo comodino. Abbiamo pianto tutti...
