Simile a un girino di metallo volante, l'EA-6B Prowler sarà probabilmente l'ultimo superstite di una lunga serie di aerei imbarcati della
Grumman risalente a prima della seconda guerra mondiale.
La sua missione è la guerra elettronica (Electronic Warfare, EW), il che spiega la presenza sulla sua superficie di una foresta di antenne.

È così efficiente che l'u.s.AF sta lentamente mandando in congedo la sua flotta di aerei E W EF-ll1 Raven e impiega gli EA-6B nelle squadriglie interforze (USN /USAF). Tutto questo è ancora più sorprendente se si considera che l'ormai trentennale design del Prowler è sulla breccia dalla metà del tempo (sessant'anni) in cui il radar è stato impiegato nelle operazioni militari e, grazie a un programma di regolari aggiornamenti, rimarrà in servizio per almeno altri dieci o quindici anni.
La guerra elettronica (l'intercettazione e il disturbo dei segnali del nemico) ebbe inizio col primo impiego militare della radio nel
conflitto russo-giapponese del 1905 e raggiunse un elevato grado di sofisticazione nella seconda guerra mondiale, quando gli scienziati e i
tecnici dell' Asse e degli Alleati lottarono strenuamente per il controllo dello
spazio aereo.
Il missile Raytheon (ex Texas Instruments) AGM-88 HARM è lungo 4,2 m, ha un diametro di 25,4 cme pesa 363 kg. La
gittata dipende dalla velocità e dalla quota dell'aereo che lo lancia; lo standard per un Prowler è di 50 miglia nautiche, pari a 92,6 km.
