Dato che i Prowler sono considerati dai sistemi difensivi nemici «unità di elevato valore» , in genere uno o due caccia forniscono loro una scorta nel caso in cui la situazione si faccia pericolosa.
In realtà nessun Prowler è mai caduto in combattimento, anche se quaranta sono andati perduti a causa di incidenti. n peggiore di questi fu una terribile esplosione in fase di atterraggio a bordo della Nimitz (CVN-74) nel 1979, che uccise l'intero equipaggio dell'aereo e alcuni membri del servizio attivo circa 125 unità.
Questo contingente è appena sufficiente per formare dodici squadriglie della Marina, quattro dei Marines e quattro «interforze»i solitamente, ogni squadriglia schiera quattro velivoli.
Le squadriglie della Marina e interforze USN/USAF
sono di stanza nella NAS di Whidbey Island, stato di Washington,
mentre le unità dei Marines operano a Cherry Point, North Carolina.
Le squadriglie interforze di EA-6B sono una nuova realtà del panorama del dopo guerra fredda, espressione della situazione finanziaria
che non permette più alle forze armate di avere due diversi tipi di aereo per la stessa missione. Anche se la Marina e l'uSAF negli anni
hanno sviluppato concetti e dottrine E W molto differenti, l' Aeronautica ha deciso di ritirare dal servizio il suo unico aereo tattico per la
guerra elettronica, l'EP-1ll Raven.
Ora le due armi si divideranno cinque squadriglie interforze di Prowler «d'intervento rapido», che opereranno con equipaggi di terra e di volo misti formati da membri della Marina e dell' Aeronautica.
Nonostante le legittime perplessità riguardo all'opportunità che ufficiali dell'Aeronautica comandino squadriglie della Marina (e viceversa), questo programma sta procedendo senza intoppi e sembra riscuotere notevole successo.
Proprio come i loro cugini della comunità di Tomcat, gli equipaggi degli EA-6B hanno appreso alcuni nuovi «trucchi» negli ultimi
anni, come l'impiego contro i radar nemici di missili AGM-88 HARM.
I Prowler sono stati anche utilizzati come aerei per il comando e il controllo delle operazioni, fungendo da apristrada per gli altri apparecchi impegnati nelle missioni di bombardamento.
Ulteriori miglioramenti comprendono piani per dare inizio a un nuovo programma di aggiornamenti, l'ICAP III (Improved Capability, capacità potenziata).
Questo programma prenderà il contingente EA-6B di base attualmente impiegato (conosciuto anche come Blocco 89) evi aggiungerà computer più potenti, processori di segnali e dispositivi di disturbo, oltre che un ricevitore GPS e nuovi data link, radio e diversi sistemi di avionica.
I Prowler equipaggiati con l'ICAP III cominceranno a fare la loro comparsa entro pochi anni.
Per quanto riguarda i futuri aerei E W imbarcati, i piani a lungo termine prevedono una versione E W biposto del nuovo P/ A-18E/P Super Hornet.
Una versione evoluta altamente automatizzata dell' ALQ-99 verrà installata su questo nuovo modello, oltre che HARM più avanzati e altri sistemi.
Ad ogni modo, dato che l'attuale budget della Marina non prevede fondi sufficienti per la produzione di questo velivolo, i vecchi Prowler dovranno continuare a volare almeno per un altro decennio o due.

To every way, since the actual budget of the Marina doesn't foresee enough funds for the production of this aircraft, the old Prowler they will have to keep on flying at least for another decade or two.
