L'Hawkeye è rimasto per lungo tempo in servizio nell'USN. Il primo modello -A volò a partire dall'ottobre de11960, per fornire i
servizi di allarme lontano per la nuova generazione di superportaerei che entrava allora in servizio.
Nel gennaio 1964, i primi dei cinquantanove E-2A vennero consegnati alle loro squadriglie e subito impiegati in combattimento nel Sudest asiatico.
Questi furono in seguito aggiornati allo standard E-2B, che rimase in uso fino a quando non venne sostituito dagli E-2C negli anni Settanta.

Anche se esteriormente identici ai modelli precedenti, gli E-2C erano equipaggiati con computer digitali di nuova
concezione, che fornivano agli operatori la capacità di tracciare e intercettare le dozzine di bombardieri sovietici e le centinaia di A5M ed
SSM che ci si aspettava sarebbero stati lanciati contro i CV8G se la guerra fredda fosse improvvisamente diventata «calda».

Più di recente, gli E-2C hanno provveduto ai servizi di comando e controllo per le fortunate operazioni della guerra del Golfo, dirigendo missioni di attacco a terra e CAP sull'lraq e fungendo da controllori per l'abbattimento dei due caccia iracheni F-7/MiG-21 da parte degli F / A-18 imbarcati sulle portaerei.
Gli E-2 hanno inoltre funzionato estremamente bene come interditori del narcotraffico per le forze dell'ordine statunitensi.

Gli attuali piani vedono la flotta di Hawkeye e di Greyhound ancora in servizio almeno fino al 2020,
quando un nuovo modello classificato come velivolo di supporto generico (Common Support Aircraft, C5A) verrà costruito nella versione
AEW.
A quell'epoca, il telaio dell'E-2 avrà volato per quasi sessant'anni!
