La Lexington e la Saratoga si possono considerare le dirette concorrenti per classe, stazza, origine da incrociatori da battaglia e data di costruzione delle portaerei giapponesi Akagi e Kaga.
Come le giapponesi si caratterizzano per la grande stazza, l'enorme (per l'epoca) capacità offensiva tramite l'alto numero di aerei ospitati e per il fatto di essere nate da navi (incrociatori e corazzate) concepite per altri scopi e quindi non essere state fin dall'origine delle portaerei.
La decisione di trasformare i due incrociatori da battaglia in portaerei fu molto saggia in quanto fruttò agli americani due portaerei molto grandi, veloci e ben protette, probabilmente le migliori della prima generazione di portaerei. Il loro successo induce a chiedersi se gli inglesi non avrebbero fatto meglio a trasformare l'incrociatore da battaglia Hood in portaerei, invece degli incrociatori leggeri da battaglia (Glorious e Courageuos) e delle ex corazzate che in effetti usarono.
Allo stesso tempo hanno subito delle notevoli trasformazioni (basti pensare agli anacronistici cannoni antinave da 203 mm., presenti originariamente anche sull'Akagi e sulla Kaga).
Non è blasfemo dire che sono arrivate "già vecchie" seppur con un "buon lifting" allo scoppio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Come l'Akagi e la Kaga sono state affondate da aerei provenienti da portaerei più piccole ma ben più moderne (Battaglia delle Midway: portaerei Enterprise, Hornet e Yorktown) allo stesso modo la poderosa Lexington non ha retto il confronto con le più piccole "Shokaku" e "Zuikaku" (battaglia del Mar dei Coralli), che erano, nel 1942, quanto di più veloce, potente e resistente la tecnologia navale potesse mettere in acqua.
"Lady Lex" è stata quindi una forte e poderosa unità che si è dovuta arrendere di fronte "al nuovo che avanza" ma comunque è servita di esperienza e di base per le portaerei della classe Essex, quelle che avrebbero in seguito vinto la Guerra del Pacifico.
Comunque il più importante contributo do queste navi alla vittoria fu probabilmente il loro impiego per addestramento ed esercitazioni negli anni tra le due guerre, dove le grandi dimensioni e la capacità di trasporto aerei ebbero grande importanza. Navi più piccole e un minor numero di aerei avrebbero significato minori possibilità di esperimenti e minore flessibilità nel collaudo di nuovi metodi.

FINAL SENTENCE OF SHINANO
The Lexington and the Saratoga the direct competing can be considered for class, tonnage, origin from battle cruisers and date of construction of the Japanese aircraft carriers Akagi and Kaga.
As the Japanese ones are characterized for the great tonnage, the enormous one (for the epoch) offensive ability through the tall number of entertained airplanes and for the fact to have been born from ships (cruisers and battleships) you conceive for other purposes and therefore not to have been since the origin of the aircraft carriers.
At the same time you/they have suffered some notable transformations (you are enough to think about the anachronistic guns antinave from 203 mms., present originally also on the Akagi and on the Kaga).
It is not blasphemous to say that they have arrived "already old" even though with a "good lifting" to the burst of the Second World war.
As the Akagi and the Kaga have been sunk by airplanes coming from smaller but well more modern aircraft carrier (Battle of the Midway: aircraft carrier Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown) equally the mighty Lexington has not held up the comparison with the smallest "Shokaku" and "Zuikaku" (battle of the Sea of the Corals), that were, in 1942, how much faster, powerful and resistant naval technology could put in water.
"Lady Lex" you/he/she has been therefore a strong and mighty unity that is had to surrender of forehead "to the new one that advances" but however you/he/she has served of experience and of base for the aircraft carriers of the class Essex, those that would have subsequently won the War of the Paciico.
