IL GIUDIZIO DELLO SHINANO / FINAL SENTENCE OF THE SHINANO
La gloriosa storia di questa unità non meriterebbe ulteriori commenti.
La Big E è e rimarrà senza dubbio la più grande e gloriosa portaerei della storia!
Per rendere un'idea della sua vita bellica basta il dato dei successi che fu esposto durante la visita a New York nell'ottobre del 1945, quindi a guerra finita:
20 battaglie, 911 aerei distrutti, 71 navi affondate
Costituì con le due gemelle Hornet e Yorktown il nucleo centrale del Pacifico allo scoppio delle ostilità coi giapponesi. Si dimostrò alla prova del fuoco una portaerei solida, difficilmente affondabile,duttile e potente, al contrario delle ben più grosse Akagi e Kaga giapponesi che furono miseramente affondate alle Midway.
Dal punto di vista storico può essere paragonata alle gemelle terribili giapponesi Zuikaku e Shokaku, con la differenza che riuscì ad uscire indenne da tante battaglie dolorose ed eroiche, basti pensare alle tre bombe incassate a Santa Cruz....., per entrare nell'Olimpo delle grandi navi della storia, paragonabile solo alla Victory di Nelson e forse superiore, per fama, alla leggendaria Bismarck.
La sua storia è dettagliatamente illustrata in una sezione diversa, qui mi limiterò a citare solo alcuni ma significativi dati:
18.04.1942 : scorta la Hornet nel rai di Doolittle contro Tokyo;
04 - 06 giugno 1942 : battaglia di Midway : il suo gruppo aereo affonda le portaerei giapponesi Akagi, Kaga e Soryu ed Hiryu (l'intera Kido Butai)
26.10.1942 : battaglia di Santa Cruz : i suoi aerei danneggiano gravemente le portaerei giapponesi Zuiho e Shokaku, fu gravemente colpita da tre bombe di aereo
16 - 17 febbraio 1944: il suo gruppo aereo distrugge la base giapponese considerata inespugnabile di Truk
14.06.1944 battaglia delle Marianne : i suoi aerei affondano la portaerei giapponese Hiyo
24.10.1944 battaglia di Leyte : il suo gruppo aereo distrugge la supercorazzata giapponese Musashi e la portaerei giapponese Zuiho
16.02.1945 : primo attacco di una portaerei a Tokyo
19.02.1945 : operazione di appoggio all'attacco di Iwo Jima
07.04.1945 : operazione di appoggio all'attacco di Okinawa : viene gravemente colpita da un kamikaze giapponese, tale Tomi Zai, dovette abbandonare per sempre la guerra
Come ben si vede la sua storia sconfina nella leggenda!
Non dimentichiamoci, però, che al contrario di una corazzata, una portaerei non dipendeva solo dal proprio equipaggio e dalla sua contraerea, ma per sopravvivere doveva fare affidamento soprattutto sulla propria squadriglia aerea (caccia e bombardieri) che ospitava.
L'Enterprise seppe, tramite i propri comandanti, forgiare i migliori gruppi aerei della Seconda Guerra Mondiale ed utilizzarli al meglio in maniera letale e terribile, diventando l'incubo degli ammiragli giapponesi.
Dalla fine della Battaglia di Santa Cruz all'avvento della classe Essex resse quasi da sola lo sforzo bellico americano, rimanendo l'ultimo bastione difensivo.
Dopo l'avvento delle nuove grandi portaerei della classe Essex continuò a forgiare, tramite l'aiuto dei propri veterani, i migliori piloti della U.S. Navy e combattè come portaerei notturna fino alla battaglia di Okinawa ed allo schianto del kamikaze Tomi Zai con onore e ferocia.

The Big E is and will remain without doubt the greatest and glorious aircraft carrier of the history!
To make an idea of his/her war life enough the datum of the successes that was exposed during the visit to New York in October of 1945, therefore to ended war:
20 battles, 911 destroyed airplanes, 71 sunk ships
It constituted with the two twin Hornet and Yorktown the central nucleus of the Pacific to the burst of the hostilities with the Japanese. You showed a solid aircraft carrier to the test of the fire, hardly affondabile,duttile and powerful person, contrarily of the well biggest Akagis and Japanese Kaga that were miserably sunk to the Midway. s
From the historical point of view you/he/she can be compared to the twin terrible Japanese Zuikaku and Shokaku, with the difference that succeeded in going out uninjured from so many painful and heroic battles, you are enough to think about the three bombs boxed to Saint Cruz....., to enter the Olimpo of the great ships of the history, comparable only to the Victory of Nelson and perhaps superior, for fame, to the legendary Bismarck.

Let's not forget us, however, that contrarily of a battleship, an aircraft carrier didn't depend only from his/her own crew and from his anti-aircraft, but to survive had to make above all trust on his/her own aerial squadron (hunting and bombardiers) that it entertained.
The Enterprise knew, through his/her own commanders, to forge the best aerial groups of the Second World war and to use them to the best in lethal and terrible way, becoming the nightmare of the Japanese admirals.
From the end of the Battle of Saint Cruz to the advent of the class Essex held up almost alone I strive him/it war American, the last defensive bastion remaining.
After the advent of the new great aircraft carriers of the class Essex kept on forging, through the help of his/her own veterans, the best pilots of the U.S. Navy and he/she fought up to the battle of Okinawa with honor and ferocity.
Legendary.
