La portaerei Furious ha l'onore di essere stata la prima portaerei della storia. Nata come incrociatore ha subito durante la sua esistenza una serie continua e profonda di modificazioni che la hanno portata a diventare da una nave in grado solo di lanciare gli aerei (in questa veste partecipò alla Prima Guerra Mondiale ed ebbe l'onore di fare il primo attacco aereo imbarcato della storia) ad una portaerei vera e propria. Ebbe un'esistenza lunghissima (dal 1917 al 1948) ed intensa (fu l'unica portaerei a combattere in due conflitti mondiali) e seguì pari passo l'evoluzione tecnologica dell'arma navale. "Cambiò pelle" infatti almeno quattro volte, risultando, alla fine, una nave totalmente diversa da quella originaria con i suoi poderosi cannoni da 457 mm. Non riuscì mai, però, a diventare una portaerei "tutto ponte" come le coetanee Argus ed Eagle, ma finì per assomigliare alle portaerei giapponesi. Ebbe l'eccezionale caratteristica di avere un'isola sollevabile come un ascensore sul ponte di volo e si caratterizzò per la sua forma ibrida e particolare. La sua importanza storica è innegabile e grandissima ed oscura le sue gesta belliche, peraltro importanti e dignitose. Storica! La nave poteva alloggiare al massimo 36 aerei, aveva un dislocamento a pieno carico di 27.250 tonnellate ed una velocità massima di 31 nodi.
The Furious has the honor to have been the first aircraft carrier of the history. Been born as cruiser it has suffered during his/her existence a continuous and deep series of modifications that they have brought it to become from a ship alone able to launch the airplanes (in this dress it participated in the First World war and it had the honor to make the first attack airplane embarked of the history) to a real aircraft carrier.
It had a long existence (from 1917 to 1948) and intense (it was the only aircraft carrier to fight in two world conflicts) and it followed equal footstep the technological evolution of the naval weapon.
"It changed skin" in fact at least four times, resulting, at the end, a different ship totally from that native with its mighty guns from 457 mms.
He/she never succeeded, however, to become an aircraft carrier "tuttoponte" as the contemporary Arguses and Eagle, but it ended up resembling to the Japanese aircraft carriers.
It had the exceptional characteristic to have an island sollevabile as an elevator on the bridge of flight and it was characterized for its hybrid and particular form.
Its historical importance is undeniable and huge and darkens its war deeds, besides important and dignified.
