La Graf Zeppelin è l'emblema delle incertezze e insicurezze che regnarono durante tutta la guerra nella Marina Tedesca.
Nata come capostipite di una serie di portaerei fu varata in pompa magna ma non fu mai completata. E' significativo ricordare che non gli furono mai messi i motori e che la sua esistenza si trascinò stancamente da un cantiere all'altro.
I lavori andarono avanti dal 1936 al 1943 in maniera altalenante e facendo modifiche all'armamento (grazie all'esperienza dei primi anni di guerra). Il suo completamento fu considerato inutile quando Doenitz sostituì Raeder e puntò tutto sulla costruzione a ciclo continuo di sommergibili, rinunciando quasi totalmente alla guerra di superficie. Il fattore principale che ne rallentò la costruzione fu però l'ostilità palese dell'areonautica tedesca (con goering in testa) che era ben restia a dare aerei alla marina.
Ricordiamo che in Germania non nacque mai (sempre per colpa di Goering) una areonautica sotto il controllo della Marina, al contrario ad esempio di Giappone e Stati Uniti.
E' impossibile dire se sarebbe risultata una buona unità. Di sicuro possiamo dire che se anche fosse stata completata e messa in mare non avrebbe inciso sulle sorti del conflitto.
Questo perchè nel 1943 la flotta tedesca era ormai sulla difensiva e ridotta a subalterna rispetto ai sommergibili. Oltretutto una sola portaerei non costituiva comunque una seria minaccia.
Certo se fosse stata resa operativa nel 1940 e affiancata da una o più unità gemelle avrebbe potuto cambiare le sorti della Battaglia dell''Atlantico.
Avrebbe potuto essere di appoggio all'operazione Leone Marino o costituire con la Bismarck e la Trpitz una task force di tutto rispetto. Certo se la Bismarck fosse stata appoggiata dalla Graf Zeppelin non sarebbe stata un facile bersaglio agli aerei dell'Ark Royal.
In definitiva la Graf Zeppelin può considerarsi un'occasione persa.

Been born as founder of a series of aircraft carrier it was launched in great pomp but you/he/she was never completed. And' meaningful to remember that the motors had never put him and that its existence tiredly dragged him from a yard to the altro.
The jobs had gone on since 1936 to 1943 in way altalenante and making changes to the armament (thanks to the experience of the first years of war). Its completion was considered useless when Doenitz replaced Raeder and aimed everything at the cycle construction I continue of submersibles almost totally abdicating the war of surface. This because in 1943 the German fleet was by now on the defensive and redoubt to subordinate in comparison to the submersibles. Moreover an only aircraft carrier didn't constitute a serious minaccia. however
Certainly if you/he/she had been made operational in 1940 and placed side by side by one or more twin unities you/he/she would have been able to change the fates of the Battle dell '' Atlantico.
You/he/she would have been able to be of support to the operation Leo Marino or to constitute with the Bismarck and the Trpitz a task force of everything respect. Certainly if the Bismarck had been supported by the Graf Zeppelin you/he/she would not have been an easy target to the airplanes of the Ark Royal.
In conclusion the Graf Zeppelin you/he/she can consider him a lost occasion.
