BATTAGLIA NAVALE  DI LEPANTO

NAVAL BATTLE OF LEPANTO

(7 OTTOBRE 1571)

IL TRIONFO DELLA FLOTTA CRISTIANA SULLA FLOTTA TURCA

GALEAZZA / GALEAZZA

GALEAZZA

The galeazza is a type of war helmet mainly used in the Mediterranean Sea beginning from the XVI century. You differentiated from the common thin helmet for the most greater dimensions, the big number of artilleries and the exclusive possibility among the helmets - to effect the side draught.

These ships, you use for the first time in the battle of Lepanto, they represented the passage between the helmet and the war veliero.

The galeazza was usually endowed with 3 trees to sails quadre (the greatest had 4 trees), castle of bow, castle of stern (this model had already been developed in the caracca and subsequently in the galleon of the Mediterranean) and two bridges. It could have brought since 32 to the 46 benches of rowers (oars to scalaccio) and to climb on 36 big guns, more other than young person dimension.

The galeazza was developed on the base of wide helmets merchant said big helmets, for a long time more convenient following the reduction of the Mediterranean trafficis. Since you/they were converted for the military use they had to be potentially tall and wide (rather than to read); an elevated number of guns, that you/they were positioned for the most greater part along the shed sides among the oars and in the castle of bow here and there climbed on.

The model of the galeazza was developed from the Republic in Venice that succeeded therefore to get ships that could compete with the ordinary helmets.

They were relatively built from there few, but they had a lot of importance however, particularly in the battle of Lepanto (October 7 th 1571), during which the power of fire of the six present Venetian galeazzes (to director Francesco Duodo's command), you employ for the first time, they were conclusive in to bring the Christian fleet to the victory. The galeazzes were also appreciated by the great admiral Venetian Francis Morosini, so much that one of these boats were from him choice as flagship of the fleet. Four fit galeazzes to hold the sea also accompanied the invincible Army in 1588 (to es. The Girona).

The a little deep waters, the jagged coasts, the mild climate and the varying winds weakly of the Mediterranean they allowed the helmets and the galeazzes to survive up to the beginnings of the XVIII century.
