Cast & Characters

NICOLAS CAGE ("Via da Las Vegas", "Al di là della vita") è Carl Hayden. E' un poliziotto di frontiera. Lavora presso la California Border Patrol con sede a San Diego. Il suo è un lavoro duro, visto che deve sorvegliare il confine insieme al collega Bobby in un particolare settore della frontiera tra gli Stati Uniti e il Messico. E' turbato da un passato fatto di cose belle e cose brutte, tra le quali la morte per leucemia della moglie Rachel, della quale ha continui ricordi e visioni. Quando incontra la clandestina messicana Louisa crede di aver trovato una bella soluzione ai suoi mali. Tra le cose che ama di più la figlia Tracy.

DAVID MORSE ("Il miglio verde", "Dancer in the dark") è Roberto "Bobby" Ramirez. Collega di Carl. Di origine messicana. E' un uomo saggio, da molto tempo nella polizia di frontiera. Anche lui ha un passato oscuro che non vuole rivelare, fino a che non si decide a tornare a Guanajuato, cittadina del Messico dove è nato, a trovare la sua famiglia. Conosce l'indole depressa e rattristata di Carl e cerca sempre di spronarlo ad andare avanti nella vita.

SALMA HAYEK ("Dal tramonto all'alba", "Inseguiti") è Louisa Hernandez. Bellissima, messicana, è la donna che apre una breccia nel cuore di Carl. Ha un figlio da poco nato ed un fratello abile lavoratore, Ramon. Anche lei rimane colpita dall'animo di Carl, che decide di farle passare la frontiera per andare a cercare fortuna a Madera dove abita un suo zio. La sua presenza entra in scena nel secondo tempo della storia.

ESAI MORALES ("Bad boys", "La Bamba") è Julio Ramirez. Fratello di Bobby. Anche lui entra in scena nel secondo tempo e ha un'importante ruolo, quando informa Bobby della morte dei genitori. Non ha ancora perdonato Bobby per aver lasciato Guanajuato. E' sposato e ha un figlio.

WILLIAM DEVANE ("Payback") è Mendoza. Imprenditore di Mexicali. La polizia americana sa delle sue malefatte, soprattutto riguardo allo sfruttamento della manodopera sui messicani. Carl e Bobby nel loro inconscio gli attribuiscono una serie di delitti avvenuti proprio sulla linea di confine.

Le Note Tecniche

La sceneggiatura di "Immaginary Line" è stata in cantiere per 2 anni. L'arrivo di Cinematik ha dato la scossa giusta alla stesura finale del copione. Il film è tratto dalla canzone di Bruce Springsteen "The line" (dal LP "The Ghost Of Tom Joad"). La frase di lancio è "La fame è una cosa potente" tratta proprio dalla canzone e più volte menzionata nel film. Se devo descrivere il film, direi che si avvicina all'impatto narrativo di "Al di là della vita" di Scorsese sempre con Nicolas Cage. Anche qui abbiamo di fronte un uomo con tanti problemi, soprattutto morali, l'uomo che non riesce ad andare avanti senza pensare a quanto dolorosa è stata la perdita della moglie. La storia si sviluppa nell'arco di alcuni giorni, in cui Carl dà una svolta netta alla sua vita, con conseguenti conquiste e conseguenti perdite. Per stendere il copione mi sono dovuto informare molto sul Messico per dare uno sfondo alla storia, e molto sulle Border Patrol americane e nel complesso è stato un lavoro lungo e arduo. Più semplice trarne un film in confronto a "Sleep of the dead", visto che abbiamo una storia più chiara come stesura, e sicuramente più sfruttabile.

Le canzoni

E' stata scelta una colonna sonora più classica rispetto a "Sleep of the dead". Si va dallo stesso Springsteen, presente con due canzoni ("The line" e "Across the border") a Jackson Browne ("Late for the sky"), ai Buffalo Springfield ("For what it's worth" e "On the way home") a Ruben Blades (nella sua versione del traditional "Un lunes por la manana"), fino a David Hidalgo ("Rio De Tenampa") a Santana ("Veracruz").

There's a bar in Tijuana where me and Bobby
Drink with the same people we'd sent back the day before
She said her name was Louisa
She was from Sonora and had just come north
We danced and I held her in my arms
And I knew what I would do
She said she had some family in Madera county
If she, her child and younger brother could just get through

At night they come across the levee
In the searchlight's dusty glow
We'd rush 'em in our Broncos
Force 'em back down into the river below
She climbed into my truck
She leaned toward me and we kissed
As we drove her brother's shirt slipped open
And I saw the tape across his chest

We were just about on the highway
When Bobby's jeep come up in the dust on my right
I pulled over and let my engine run
And stepped out into his lights
I felt myself movin'
Felt my gun restin' 'neath my hand
