Preliminary notes
Numerous itineraries are possible on the calcareous plateaus, both in the Finale area (m.te Cucco, Rocca of Perti, Bric Pianarella), and in the zone of the Manie (= witchs).
The environment is really particular; on the highlands the mechanized world seems indeed very more remote than it is in reality.
If you don't want the Smilax Aspera (tenacities climbing thorny) destroys your attire don't estranged by the beaten paths.
The vertical walls are frequent that make forced the passages.
Entirely different the environment on the ridge watershed where it finds again the usual aspect of Appenines.

1 - Road Regina (road Beretta)

Updating: 9/2001
Trail description
From Colla S. Giacomo we take the road toward the Passo of Melogno that it crosses the forest almost in plain.
Later around 1,5 kms we perceive a tourist poster that brings news historical around the ancient road.
We begin to go down to the left and after few meters we take the road, closed by a bar, that goes to right in light descent neglecting the two forest roads that they are more inviting and that they go down more steeply.
The road continues in the wood alternating tracts in descent to others in slope, it decidedly descends with some windings.
A diagonal tract toward west, then a steep descent. We arrive so to a clean turn to the right (km 3,1) where it begins a tract of 500 ms ruined by the floods of the brooks.
After this little cycle tract the path is widened for becoming forest road.
At the end of a tract in descent we must do a lot of attention because we have to leave the inviting forest road, that begins to climb, to take a minor road that goes down to the left (km 4).
The road has a little bit rough ground, but it is cycle. With some windings we go down until the road it is widened and a wide cart-road becomes (km 5).
We follow it without difficulty until almost near the provincial one. Here (km 7,1) we find to the left a road more narrow that goes down in opposite direction to that from which we originate.
We go down, we cross 200 meters and we turn to the right in a path with bushes. We have to get over some tract invaded by the vegetation thorny, then the situation improves and a tract in clean descent it brings us to meet on a wide road (km 8,1).
We turn to the right and we stay on this road that leads to the Provincial one, in place Pian Merlino (km 9,4).
We go on the descent on the asphalt road and we arrive to a intersection near the small church of S.Rocco (km 11,4).
To the right we can go down to Calice, to the left to Feglino.
In front of the church a dirt road departs and immediately there are two possibilities:

  1. we go on in plain on the comfortable dirt road. After 500 meters we leave the road and we go down to the left (trail sign FIE: two red disks). The descent continues enough easy. We reach a intersection (km 12,5) where we go to the right and we reach Pianmarino (km 13).
  2. we go down to the left following the steep paved descent. Later few the inclination decreases and we easily continue up to the houses of Cia (km 11,9). To the right we find two paths and we take that level (trail sign FIE: red cross). We continue enough easily but with some difficult passage, then we rise reaching a first intersection (km 13). We go to the right here and we cross the preceding path; we turn to the left and we reach Pianmarino (km 13,5).

We cross the whole beautiful lawn, avoiding to stamp on the grass, and we arrive to an intersection. Here the path goes to the left (it is cycle but clearly more difficulty) while we turn to the right following a dirt road.
It is a private road that passes near a farmhouse where there are poltry, cross therefore with suitable respect! The road climbs for then going down to the houses of Montesordo; we get over that and we reach the asphalt road (km 14,2).
We turn to the left and we follow the asphalt road up to the church of Perti (km 16,2).
In front of the church a mule-track goes down. We follow it in light descent, then in slope. The road then it goes down, it passes in the near of the Castle and it finishes to Final Borgo (km 17).

Gradient: 800 ms.
On saddle: 93%
Observations: Some difficulties of orientation. The trail signs are scarce (luckily). The road is enough evident but the two intersections (to the kms 4 and 7,1) it are not at all.
Varying 1.1: To Calice.
From the church of S.Rocco we follow the main trail. When that leaves the road to go to the left we continue on the road. We get over a tract in slope, then we begin to go down.
We always follow the most evident road neglecting those small. The steep descent becomes asphalted and we quickly arrive to Calice (km 5,4).

2 - Ascent from Feglino to Colla S.Giacomo

Updating  4/2000
Run
From Feglino we follow the asphalt road that it climbs to Orco, passing under the tall motorway bridge. We almost continue in slope until to the first houses of Orco. Here, at the end of the slope, we find to the left a road in slope (km 2,7; trail sign FIE: two red crosses).
The asphalt road coasts along an area pic-nic, it becomes dirt and it softly goes up again to half coast. To a first fork we rise to the right and we arrive to a cross in proximity of a house; we go to the left here (km 3,9).
We rise on a rural road with good paving and without excessive inclinations.
We neglect the numerous deviations always following the principal road and precisely: to the right to the km 5 (fork for farmhouse Stra); to the right to the following fork to the km 7,2. Other deviations are evidently misleading.
Inclination increases, we pass near a ruin and arrive to cross the ample dirt road deriving from Rocche Bianche.
We rise to the left quickly reaching the Colla.

3 - Descent from  Colle of Melogno to Calice Ligure (via Bric Gettina)

Updating  4/2000
Run.
From the fortifications of the Melogno we go down toward the sea up to reach an evident cross with a road that originates from left (big square, restaurant).
We leave the National road and cross the square to take a level mule-track that is directed toward south coasting along the hill on which is the "House of the Magician".
At the first fork we go to the right and we continue coasting along the National road from above.
Later around 6,3 kms a clearing is glimpse in the wood, few more meters before. It is the square with the small church of the Madonna della Guardia (it deserves to arrive there for the panorama). To the left a road gets further in opposite direction to that of origin.
We pick it up: it offers an amusing descent up to the floor of the valley. Here we cross a bridge and we reach the provincial road (km 11).
Gradient:   950 ms.

Varying:   From the church of the Madonna della Guardia the dirt road can be followed to the right. We arrive to the National road.

4 - Cross from  Spotorno, via Val Ponci

Updating:  1/2000
Run.
From the center of Spotorno we go toward Savona until to meet the deviation for the highway. We turn to the left, leaving the National road.
We follow the road that go toward the highway, doing attention to the small roads that climb among the houses on the right.
When we find an ampler road with indication "agriturismo Mae Vigna" we turn and we rise (km 0,5). (Just after we can take away also the small Via ai Frati).
The road climbs to go out of the houses and it reaches the agroturism. We pass in front of the building and we arrive to a fork where it climbs to the right (km 1,7).
We get over a steep ramp in concrete to whose term we continue on the dirt road.
There aren't other difficulties of orientation.
We get over a rough and steep tract, we laboriously continue to go out on a breadth pass (km 4). Here we cross the trail sign FIE (double red squares), that we will follow for a long time, and here it passes the itinerary 8, of the zone of Vado Ligure, directed to the Mao mountain.
We go to the left softly climb to cross a road that climbs to the right (pylon ENEL, km 4,6).
We rise on this road. ( varying 1 and varying 2 )
Ascent it begins steep then it is attenuated, but at the end it becomes very steep. It finishes in peak to the bric Colombino (km 5).
We continue in crest with several slopes and descents until to a saddle; here go to the right avoid the ramp that climbs.
The road continues on the northern slope and conducts to a cross-road (km 7,8). Here it is possible to go down to the left arriving on the road below (road crossed by the variation 2).
We continue to the right (always trail sign FIE) overcoming a brief ramp and then up to meet on an dirt road. We take the branch of left, climbing (km 9).
We reach shortly the confluence with the road that climbs to the Rocche Bianche (km 9,6).
We go down arriving to the asphalt road and Magnone (km 11,3). We turn to the left. We reach the provincial road where we turn to the right. To the fork that follows we don't go for Finale but we turn to the left and, after 100 meters, we rise to the right (indications for cemetery, km 12).
We exceed a church and arrive to a chapel. Going straight we would go to the Bric dei Monti ( itinerary 7 ).
We go down to the right on an ample path (equipped for not seeing people) that it was the ancient Roman Julia Augusta road.
A first tract, steep and often muddy, it conducts to the first (of Magnone) and then to the second Roman bridge (of the water). There is still some steep tract and we cross the path that goes down from the Manie (itinerary 10) , near of the third bridge (of Voze, km 14,2).
After hundred meters, next to the ruins of the fourth bridge, we rise on the shore of right and we continue among the lawns. We return on the itinerary that becomes a road, we get over the bridge of the Fate and we reach the asphalt road (km 17).
The steep descent brings to Calvisio and then to Final Pia (km 20).
Gradient:  550 m in slope.
On saddle:  99%
Observations:

Varying 1   It is possible to climb from Spotorno with a fork run.
From the center of Spotorno we direct toward the highway, on the road for Tosse and Magnone.
The road get overs a small river and then it passes under the railroad. We neglect the first crossroad and we take to the right the second, in slope (street alla Rocca; km 0,7).
The slope is steep but on asphalt road, then the paving becomes in concrete and the inclination it increases.
Finally (km 1,5) the road becomes dirt. We enter the valley crossed by the highway going in plain to the left.
Steep tracts are alternated to others level, then the road is feathered with some very binding ramps. Exceeded a winding the inclination decreases and the road meets in another one, more marked (km 3,8).
We rise to the left and we enter an ample road paving in gravel.
We turn to the right reaching the intersection with the road for the bric Colombino (km 4,8).
The difficulty is as soon as inferior to that of the principal itinerary.

Varying 2   The road that continues over the intersection for the bric Colombino reaches the provincial one that climbs from Spotorno to Tosse and to Magnone. The whole run is ample and partly asphalt (km 3).

In front of the small church a dirt road departs in descent.
We pick it up and we go down, with constant inclination, in the beech-wood.
At 5 km is met a fork where we go straight neglecting the right road. The descent is made steep and quickly hands to the first houses of the country of Vene (km 9). Here we meet the asphalt road; we continue come down up to the principal road, turns to the left for Calice (km 12,5).
Along the whole run they are met forks that are neglected, all it takes is staying on the principal run.

Updating: 1/2000
Run.
From Calice we follow the main road coasting along the stream. We neglect the indications for Rialto that they are met to the right and we always continue on the road.
Crossed a bridge we begin to climb and soon the slope is made steep. We reach a small church where we still go straight on. We leave houses with some steep windings arriving to cross a road. It is the road that arrives from Rialto (country that doesn't is necessary to reach).
We rise to the left with more moderate inclination, we get over a last house and we meet a fork (km 6).
We take the dirt road that it climbs to the right.
We rise with ample windings and non excessive inclination.
We go out on the provincial road that brings to Bormida and Osiglia (km12,5); the National road is found 100 m to the left (restaurant, itinerary 3 ).
Reached the National it is gone to slope up to the Pass.

The highland of the Manie

This territory is extended between Finalpia and Spotorno. It is entirely crossed from an ample asphalt road connected to others smaller.
On the highland there are numerous dirt but easy roads, while the runs of connection in the side valleys can be rather difficult.

7 - Ascent from Varigotti to Bric dei Monti

Updating:  12/2000
Run:
From Varigotti it is necessary to find the road with the indications for Isasco.
We rise for this asphalt road that it conducts to a square from where it continues steep and concrete paving.
The steep tract finishes and begins the dirt road (km 2.7). We continue in light slope and we reach the intersection with the asphalt road (km 4.3).
We cross the asphalt road and continue on the dirt road on the other side. With descending course we arrive to the church of S.Giacomo (km 5).
From here, going to the left, we could reach the Arma of the Manie and go down, in around 1,5 kms, to the road of the Roman bridges.
We go to the right instead on a road to light slope that conducts again to the asphalt one, exactly in front of the restaurant Ferrin. We turn to the left.
We get over a tract in light slope and we go down then to Voze where we turn to the left (km 8).
From here in common with itinerary 4 . We do attention to a road that is directed to the left with almost opposite direction to that of origin. It is the road for the church and for the cemetery (km 11).
We follow this road to meet a chapel on the left (km 12.2).To the right the path goes down (trail sign FIE red little ball) for the Val Ponci.
We go straight on the road that it becomes dirt. The road has term to a gate. We rise to the left.
We integrally follow a mule-track that it finishes little bottom the peak of the Bric dei Monti (km 14.3).
Around 500 meters before the term of the road it is well visible a knoll with some pine. The panorama deserves the few meters of deviation.

8 - Descent from Bric dei Monti to Varigotti

Updating: 12/2000
Description.
From the peak we go down, crossing the road of slope, and taking the first, evident path to the left (km 0.5, trail sign FIE).
Let's follow it in the bush of holm-oaks to an intersection (km 1.5) where we go to the left arriving to a square and to a dirtroad.
We go down on the dirt road arriving to a lawn in a small valley. We go up again from the opposite part and we continue on the road that finishes to the asphalt (km 3; you see varying ).
We turn to the right on the road that climbs for overcoming a back, then it goes down to arrive to the restaurant Ferrin. We continue for 200 meters and then we turn to the left.
Here it begins a beautiful dirt road that it goes down up to the lighthouse of Capo Noli (non accessible lighthouse). One hundred meters before the lighthouse (km 7.4) start to the right a few visible path (blue trail sign) that it is advance in the wood.
We follow it without difficulty for a kilometer then the path it begins to go down steep, with rough bed and it becomes difficult to cross in saddle.
We arrive to a strange adorned construction and we go down passing near the small church of S.Lorenzo (absolutely to reach!).
The bed is good now and allows to continue in saddle up to the asphalt (km 10). The center of Varigotti is 500 meters far.
Gradient: 450 m.

Observations: the tract among Capo Noli and Varigotti has some difficult tracts. It is worth to do a quiet descent going on the two deviations that conduct to spectacular panoramic points.
Varying of the Red Earths: Beautiful and strongly advisable.
Go to the right climb on the asphalt road for around 100 meters. To the left we see a square from which a dirt road departs.
We go to slope and we arrive to a square level from where they depart varied paths (km 0,2). We turn to the right taking the road that rise.
We get over 300 meters steep ramps, then we continue on the road in light slope. The road finishes on a square (km 1) and it becomes path.
The path proceeds level for 300 meters, absorbed in the Mediterranean bush. We get over a tract in descent, then we go to slope and we finally go down for meeting in the dirt road direct to Capo Noli (km 1,7).

11 - Ascent from Final Pia to Rocca di Corno

Updating:  1/2001
Run
From the church-convent of Final Pia we follow the road that goes up again along the stream in direction of Orco/Vezzi/Magnone.
get over the church of Calvisio and the few houses we watch out to a bridge that it crosses the stream, to the right (km 1,6).
The road climbs steep with narrow windings in direction of Verzi. Later around 1 kms we notice to the left an ample dirt level road.
The road, of ancient Roman origin, it is forwarded in the val Ponci; the whole run is marked from the symbol FIE red rhomb.
We cross a first Roman bridge (bridge of the Fairies) and we reach some farmhouses; we go up to the left immediately later slightly, to avoid a tract not practicable, and we return on the layout in correspondence of the second bridge, to which immediately follows the third one (bridge of Voze or mute; km 4,5).
We skip the path for the Manie, on the right; we get over a brief difficult tract and then we reach the fourth bridge (the water's bridge; km 5.3).
A steep and often muddy tract it conducts to the Colla of Magnone where the itinerary is met for the Bric of the Monti , km 6,3.
On the left of path of origin a small road it gets further in plain (run for not seeing people). We take it. We forward so in a wood and the road it climbs, with some brief tear, up to get over a shoulder of the bric Carč.
Almost at the end of the slope the trail sign FIE goes to the right, while the path for not seeing it goes to the left. We skip the trail sign and we go to the left, however a little anymore before the two runs they are rejoined.
At the reunion we continue to the left in descent. The layout becomes a road and goes down to a saddle where a tabernacle is found (km 7,8).
On the right the road goes down to the provincial one, to the left a path that returns in val Ponci goes down; instead we go straight on reaching an old quarry.
We get over a brief tract in slope that conducts to get over the buttress of the Rocca degli Uccelli. A brief level tract and we go out to the Ciappo of the Sale (km 8,3).
We are by now on the highland that connects the Rocca degli Uccelli with the Rocca di Corno.
We follow the path that is typically forwarded in the dense vegetation of Mediterranean bush in environment "finalese". Carefully avoiding the small paths that are detached by the principal run we substantially proceed on a level run that doesn't introduce difficulty if with some hostile passage.
We arrive so to the summit of the Rocca di Corno (km 10).
To return doesn't stay that cross the same road, at least up to the saddle with tabernacle. From here it can be gone down to the left to the provincial road or to the right in val Ponci.
Gradient:  450 m.
On saddle:  99%
Observations:   The itinerary is superimposed partly to the run equipped for not seeing; it is evident that it is necessary to triple the attention for the presence of excursionists.
Varying of descent:
  • From the peak of the Horn it can be gone down for the west wall helping himself with some rope in place. Reached the base the wall it is coasted along toward left to take the steep path that finishes to the parking. On saddle: zero%.
  • From the peak of the Horn it is returned back for around 600 ms. In a square a path is noticed to the right. Going down is reached it the bridge of the Fairies. Steep and not cycle.
  • Returned back until almost to the Ciappo of the Sale it is to the right a few visible path. After some meters in plain it is fallen in low forwarding itself in a hold throat (valley of the ashes). The path finishes in val Ponci, a little awry in the farmhouses. On saddle almost zero.

We continue stright on asphalt road, in light descent, then in slope and we arrive at the end of the road (km 3,4). We go to the right here over a bar.
We pass near a goup of houses and we arrive to an intersection (km 3,9). We leave to the right the narrow road that goes to the walls of Montesordo and we go to the left.
We get over a farmhouse and we go down in the beautiful plain of Pianmarino (km 4,3). We cross the whole lawn avoiding to crush the grass.
Almost at the end of the lawn we climb to the right a steep rough narrow road arriving to an old quarry. We follow to the left the road that it coasts along the wall of the Rocca Carpanea then going down on dirt rough road up to the provincial Final Borgo/Feglino.
Gradient: 390 ms.

Observations: The varying it allows to avoid the fatiguing slope however it is, in turn, few cycle.
A mixed solution probably exists that allows to begin come down with the variation and then to reach the road under the walls of the Bric of the Monk.
Varying 12.1: we entirely cross the lawn of Pianmarino, leaving to the right the main run that begins to climb.
On the right slope of the valley it climbs a wide path (itinerary 1 contrarily). After hundred meters we meet a fork where we go to the right, in descent. We find a second fork and we still go down to the right.
It follows a steep, difficult and rough tract that very quickly goes down. We try not to lose the path (yellow signs) and we arrive to an intersection more evident where we go to the left arriving, with a last descent, to an asphalted narrow road.
Coasting along the highway we reach Feglino (km 7).

Run
From the rocky expanse that constitutes the Ciappo we direct toward west, on well marked path (trail sign FIE: squared red, itinerary 14 contrarily).
Some about ten meters of rough descent they bring in the rent of the wood from where we continue always following the ample and well evident path.
With some slope we get over the headings of some valley until to arrive to a small square, with beaten ground, absorbed in the wood (km 1,8).
We leave the principal path to go down to the left on a smaller path (trail sign FIE: red rhomb).
The first tract is steep and difficult, but it is brief and it conducts in a lawn near the construction it dictates "House of the Vacchč."
We continue among the lawns of the valley; at the end we neglect the path that climbs to the right and we continue in the floor of the valley to cross the river going up again from the opposite part.
A tract in descent brings to again cross the stream, we shortly go up again then.

At the term of the ledge begins a steep descending tract that brings to the edge of a quarry and finally to a small road (km 1) from where the asphalt is reached to hundred meters.
Gradient:  100 m.
On saddle:  50%
Observations:  It is an a little cycle run, difficult and also introduces some exposed tract.
It can serve to whom wants to continue for Orco or, in contrary sense, for the one who originates from Orco and wants to continue for Finale avoiding the asphalt.

Svoltiamo a sinistra e scendiamo.

20 - Ascent from Finalborgo to Gorra

Updating: 2/2003
Description.
We depart from the historical center of Finalborgo and we go out of Porta Testa reaching the road that climbs to the highway. We turn to the left here. After a hundred of meters we find to the right a dirt road that climbs, closed by a chain (km 0,3; trail sign FIE: red rhomb).
We turn and climb without difficulty reaching a little church. The slope does more difficulty because of the rough ground. We get over two windings and get over the bank to arrive on a wide road (km 1,7).
We now follow this road, neglecting the gates of the quarry and we reaches its term (km 2,6). On the right we follow the path that forwards on the highland, in light slope, then level.
At a fork we continue straight on (the left path is that FIE, that we find again before). We continue in light slope, then we go down to meet the FIE path and we continue to the right up to the confluence with the path that it originates from Borgio (FIE red circle; km 4).
We turn to the right. The path slightly climbs to a back (to the right a narrow road leads to an enchanting angle typically finalese) and then it goes down to the border of an ample lawn (km 4,3).
We are able to ascent on the paved mule-track that it climbs on the left, or to go to the right and to cross the lawn, at the end ascent to the left. In every case we reach the cemetery and the church of S. Martino (restaurant).
Behind the church the path climbs with a non cycle stretch and reaches the big cross of the Marian apparitions (km 4,6).
We go down on the good path arriving to an intersection where we turn to the right with the trail sign (FIE red rhomb; straight on varying).
The path is good, but presents some uneven stretches, then it becomes road that climbs to the aerials (km 5,2).
We continue on the road that goes down and it reaches the pass that precedes the Tower of Bastia (km 5,7).
Intersection of paths. We follow the road for fifty meters and we turn to the right in a wide path that steep goes down (trail sign red circle; the road that we have left it continues and it reaches the tarmac after 800 meters).
The path becomes road and lead decided to the first houses of Gorra, where we meet the tarmacked road (km 6,3).
The center of Gorra is to the right to 800 meters, from there to Finalborgo 3 km.
Gradient: in slope 340 ms.
Rideable: 98%
Observations:
Varying 20.1: Direct descent to Finalborgo
From the church of S.Martino we return to the lawn and we follow the path that coasts along it, side north (trail sign FIE: three red disks).
We meet two intersections where we go to the right. The easy stretch finishes and the path begins a steep descent, with some narrow winding and rocky ground. Then we still overcome a long easy diagonal and then some windings. We arrive this way to the beginning of the road that we have used to climb (km 2). A lot difficult.

21 - Descent from Gorra to Borgio

Updating: 2/2003
Description.
From Gorra we take the narrow tarmacked road that climbs in direction Verezzi. At the last houses of Bracciale we turn to the left (km 0,8) and ascent following the a narrow road. To the left at the first intersection. We are following contrarily the itinerary 20.
At the following fork we don't follow the road in concrete that climbs to the right, but we continue on the left.
Another fork and we turn to the right here, in steep slope (km 1,2); at the end we turn to the left. The level path crosses the wood, then it goes down with some narrow windings to overcome the rocky ridge. To the descent it follows a steep and not cycle ascent, another descent and finally a slope that brings us on the pass beside the Rocks of the Orera. Intersection (km 2,2).
We take the path on the right, the most marked of the two, level. With beautiful up-amd-down run we arrive to cross a wide path (km 2,5). To the left the variation goes down 20.1; we turn to the right and we reach the great lawn under the church of S. Martino (km 2,7).
We cross the lawn and we meet the mule-track that it descents from the church. We turn to the left (two trail signs FIE: rhomb and circle).
We overcome the brief slope and then we begin the descent. We leave to the left the run 20 (km 3,1) and we continue straight on.
The path is binding because of the stones, but it is not too much difficulty.
We arrive on a narrow road (km 4) where difficulties finish. We turn to the right and we go straight at the following intersection. We reach a tarmacked road (km 4,5). Following it we quickly reach Borgio (km 5,3).
Gradient: in slope 90 ms.
Rideable: 96%
