CIF CONFERENCE 2001

ROME JULY 24 - 29

DIVERSITY: A RESOURCE OR A MENACE FOR THE THIRD MILLENNIUM SOCIETY (IMPLICATIONS FOR THE HELPING PROFESSIONS)

The many changes that Italy has experienced in the last decades, as it has happened in the rest of the world, have solicited a different way to look at what seems "different" referring to health, psychiatric, criminal, chemical dependency, handicap, sexual role, religious, cultural and migration issues, to mention some. All of this has brought about many new situations and problems, and maybe the opportunity to reflect on how we perceive and live what is unfamiliar to us; thus, the choice to open or close our minds to understand the part of ourselves that exists in others. As individuals and professionals we are constantly faced, in a minimal or maximal way, with all kinds of diversities. Once recognized, how do we react to them? Often they devolve in tension and disputes. Other times they can be used to enhance and enrich individuals and society. Being part of CIF should place us in a privileged position. What is our experience? How can we concretely contribute to the query? We hope that everyone will participate actively and share the invaluable experiential knowledge of which depository. It is our effort to structure the Conference in a way that it will allow everyone to be a protagonist in the making of the event. Let's discover, therefore, with all the respect that is due, how much we have to give and still can gain or not because of "diversity".
