Arthropoda, Diplopoda, Chordeumatida
Diplopoda, Chordeumatida, Craspedosomatidae,
Crossosoma semipes Strasser, 1958 - It is a troglobite Diplopod remarkably adapted to the hypogean environment; it is completely anophthalme. C. semipes is smaller than the species C. cavernicola and has a more marked yellowish color. It lives in cold caves with little trophical resources; in the Rio Martino Cave lives the subspecies semipes, while the "Buco di Valenza" Cave is populated by the subspecies globosum. The author observed this Diplopod predated by the Opilion Ischyropsalis alpinula, whose probably it is the habitual prey. The author found this Diplopod also in the inner parts of the Rio Martino Cave, in the higher branch, where the life conditions are extreme because of the scarse food resources. (Real size: about 20-22 mm).Other images:
