Walt Disney Records: Bio of Goofy
Disney's very own biography of Goofy.
Goofy's multimedia status was launched early in his career, in 1933, with appearances in daily Mickey Mouse comic strips, as a neighbor and occasional associate of Mickey in his activities.
Because the needs of the daily and weekly Mickey Mouse strips quickly exhausted the situations, stories, and characters that had been created for the films, comic artist Floyd Gottfredson and his team of writers created new situations and adventures that, particularly in the case of Goofy, helped define and develop the characters and their personalities.
Today, 60 years later, Goofy is still enormously popular, and appears in comic books and comic strips published in 14 languages and 15 countries.
Beginning in 1953, Goofy starred in his own limited series of comic-book adventures.
He has also starred in comic spoofs of historical characters, literary and actual, including Rip Van Winkle and Leonardo da Vinci.
Most recently, he starred in a limited comic series, Goofy Adventures , from Disney Comics.

Cartoon Brew: What is it specifically about the THIEF AND THE COBBLER that inspired you to invest so much of your time and money to restore this film? Garrett Gilchrist: When I was seven years old, I read an article in COMICS SCENE magazine, and in it, Williams said he was trying to revolutionize animation, that he was trying to create the greatest animated motion picture ever made, and that he'd been working for twenty-three years on this one film called THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER.

Wikipedia: Topolino

Animated Films
Extensive history of family-oriented animated movies from silents to present day.
Early Animation: The predecessor of early animation was the newspaper comic strips of the 1890s.
Winsor McCay ("America's Greatest Cartoonist") New York Herald comic-strip animator and sketch artist Winsor McCay (1869-1934) produced a string of comic strips from 1904-1911, his three best being Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend , Little Sammy Sneeze , and Little Nemo in Slumberland (from October 15, 1905 to July 23, 1911).
His first animation attempt used the popular characters from his comic strip (and became part of his own vaudeville act): Little Nemo in Slumberland (1911) (with 4, 000 hand-drawn frames), followed by How a Mosquito Operates (1912) (with 6, 000 frames).
Messmer continued with his comic strip (begun in 1923) until 1966.
[Mickey Mouse was never a comic strip character before he became a cartoon star.] The first Mickey Mouse cartoon was released on May 15, 1928: Plane Crazy (1928) in which Mickey, while impressing Minnie, imitated aviator Charles Lindbergh.
Segar's "Thimble Theatre" newspaper comic strip published in the New York Journal for King Features Syndicate since 1919).
Popeye became so popular in the comic strip that it was renamed "Thimble Theatre, Starring Popeye." Popeye first appeared on film alongside established cartoon-star Betty Boop in July, 1933 in Fleischers' Betty Boop cartoon titled Popeye the Sailor (1933) , in which they dance the hula.

Walt Kelly Biography
An illustrated biography, including his early work as well as the comic strip Pogo.
During 1935 and 1936, his work also appeared in the fledgling comic book medium working for the company that was to become DC Comics.
However, it was in Dell's Animal Comics that Pogo was born in 1941.
The panel above right, also from the same issue, shows the early usage of human characters, a notion that was abandoned by the time the strip moved from the comic books to the comic pages of the newspapers.
Kelly's work during the 1940's appeared only in comics published by Dell.
Along with Animal Comics , he can be found in Fairy Tale Parade and the wonderful Mother Goose Christmas and Easter specials.
The issues of these comics from the early 1940's are treasure troves of cartooning at its finest.
With titles like Uncle Pogo's So-So Stories and Pogo Stepmother Goose , these hearkened back to the Mother Goose Christmas and Easter specials from Dell Comics.

Furry Feature: Disney's Robin Hood
Small page with a fantastic find: scans of the Gold Key Robin Hood comic covers.
For as long as I could remember, I had always enjoyed cartoons, comics, and storied that featured talking animals.
Disney licensee Gold Key published an adapation of the film in one of their comics digests.
The comic actually came out before the film was even released.
They also published an almost bimonthly comic series featuring original stories that take place between events in the film.
The comic lasted seven issues before being cancelled.
