Ma nel 1981 il Viking di modello -A aveva chiaramente bisogno di miglioramenti alla luce della crescita in termini di dimensioni e di forza un prototipo del1'ES-3A Shadow in un volo di prova.
I sedici Shadow prodotti hanno fornito alla flotta servizi di ricognizione elettronica e pattugliamento fino a poco

In particolare, i notevoli sforzi compiuti dai russi per ridurre il rumore dei loro sommergibili avevano reso le missioni ASW una sfida ancora più impegnativa, per migliorare l' avionica, le boe idrofoniche, il processing dei dati ESM radar e l'armamento trasportato, venne dato inizio a un programma di conversioni.
Il risultato fu 1'5-3B, che aggiornò i modelli -A al nuovo standard operativo.
I primi 5-3B entrarono nella flotta ne11987, dimostrando sin da subito le loro nuove capacità di controllo marittimo e la possibilità di lanciare missili antinave AGM-84 Harpoon.
È una versione ancora oggi in servizio.
Una delle speranze dei progettisti per 1'5-3 era di farne una cellula di base per diverse varianti. Sfortunatamente, la limitata quantità
di Viking prodotti ha ridotto notevolmente le sue possibilità di ricoprire altri ruoli.
Un esiguo contingente dei primi 5-3A fu modificato rimuovendo tutto l'equipaggiamento ASW e gli agganci per l'armamento
permettendogli di trasportare cargo e posta urgente; su quella variante trovavano posto anche tre uomini di equipaggio e fino a sei
passeggeri (con minimo livello di comfort).
Classificati US-3A e dotati di un'autonomia di molto maggiore rispetto al tradizionale aereo COD C-2A Greyhound, cinque di questi modelli volarono nella Flotta del Pacifico fino a essere recentemente ritirati dal servizio.
Una versione specifica per il rifornimento in volo, il KS-3A, fu testata ne11980,
senza mai entrare però in produzione.
La versione più importante è stata l'ES-3A «Shadow», una piattaforma per la ricognizione elettronica (Electronic Surveillance, ESM) e l'intelligence delle comunicazioni (Signal Intelligence, SIGINT), che sostituì la vecchia Balena Elettrica EKA-3B. Esternamente, lo Shadow è facilmente riconoscibile per la gobba dorsale e il radome retrattile.
Quasi 1360 kg di attrezzature ASW furono rimossi e 2721 kg di apparati elettronici furono stivati nel vano degli armamenti. Anche se lo
Shadow non è armato, può trasportare serbatoi esterni e serbatoi di rifornimento buddy. Sedici di questi apparecchi sono stati divisi in
due squadriglie: la VQ-5 (i «Sea Shadows» ) nella Flotta del Pacifico e la VQ-6 (i «Ravens») in quella dell'Atlantico.
Distaccamenti composti da due otre aerei sono solitamente presenti in ogni gruppo aereo imbarcato, fornendo un supporto ESM, SIGINT e OTH per il CVBG.
Sfortunatamente, i recenti tagli alla difesa hanno preso di mira la comunità degli Shadow, che sembrano destinati allo smantellamento.
Già nel 1999 gli ES-3 hanno cominciato a essere ritirati dal servizio.
