GAY FAMILY HISTORY

NOTE ON DATES

● until 1752 the year in England began on 25 March (Lady Day), so dates in the records between 1 JAN and 24 MAR until the year 1752 were shown as in the year before, eg. Alice Aust I’s baptism was recorded as on 11 JAN 1683, whereas by modern usage it would actually be on 11 JAN 1684

● however, in these pages all such dates have been converted into the year in which they would have fallen if the year had always begun on 1 JAN

died 17 OCT 1882, Broughton Gifford, WiltsCERT, age 70

i

● the author previously had that Richard Wansey West was born 25 MAR 1780, but the parish record states that he was baptized that date

● in the 1841 census, a Richard Fox, age 52 [so born about 1789], occupation “Army P.” [Army Pensioner?], was living in Trowbridge, Wilts, whether born in the county is illegible, but it is possibly “No”, followed by Harriet Fox age 15 [so born about 1826], and Emma Fox age 8 [so born about 1833]

● as in the 1841 no relationships were shown, it can only be presumed that these were his daughters by his 1st? wife, who is not listed, so was presumably dead

● Harriet’s age could just be 45 and not 15, in which case she would have been his wife

● The National Archives hold the following documents: “RICHARD FOX, born Frome, Somerset, served in 24th Foot Regiment, discharged aged 29 after 10 years 6 months of service, covering dates (1800-1811) give year of enlistment to year of discharge”

● this is probably him, as (1) according to the census he was born in Frome, Somerset, (2) the age at discharge would make him born around 1780-2, (3) his possible children were only born 1812 onwards, and (3) he is described as an army/Chelsea pensioner in the various census

● a plain “Richard Fox” died Q2 1863, Bradford, Wilts R/DBMD

● as this is the only death for a Richard Fox in the 1860’s, this was possibly him, the informant having only reported the name “Richard Fox”

● he was buried, again as plain “Richard Fox”, 9 APR 1863, Bradford Upon Avon, WiltsBMD, no age or occupation given, so it is not possible to see  whether this was actually him

● Eliza’s death certificate states “Eliza Fox, wife of Richard Fox, pensioner”, which would appear to be him

● nothing more is known about Eliza Wills or Eliza Blanchard

● Sabina already had a daughter, Georgiana Lasbury, born 19 FEB 1843, father unknown (but see notes for Sabina on her page)

● the latter was shown in Richard Wansey West’s 1851 census as Georgiana Petel(?), "daughter-in-law", ie. stepdaughter
