WILL DETAILS FROM THE NATIONAL INDEX OF WILLS AND ADMINISTRATIONS 1858-1966

Before 1858, ecclesiastical (church) courts dealt with probate cases (wills). A Principal Probate Registry was established in London in January 1858, and several district probate registries were created around the country, and they took control of proving wills and administrations - from then on, the registries oversaw all grants of probate and letters of administration

The collection of these grants is called the National Probate Calendar Calendar. The Calendar is separated into a different volume for each year. The entries in each volume are then listed alphabetically by surname. Information varies across different entries, but each typically includes:

· Full name of the deceased

· Death date

· Death place*

· Registry where issued

· Probate date

· Names of the people to whom probate/administration was granted, often relatives*

* after the 1960’s, these details were were no longer shown
