OTHER NOTES |
In September of 1998 U2 announced
they would be releasing the first of three "Best Of"
compilations. This compilation would cover the recordings
released between 1980 and 1990. A new recording of an old track
would be released on this compilation and used for promotion of
the compilation. The track chosen
was 1987's The Sweetest Thing. It had originally
been released as a b-side to the single Where
the Streets Have No Name. The song was rerecorded, released
as a single and on the a-sides disc of the Best
of 1980 - 1990 compilation. The original version was
released on the b-sides
disc of the Best of 1980 - 1990 compilation.
The Sweetest Thing was written for Bono's
wife Ali when he missed her birthday in 1986. It was recorded
for possible inclusion on the Joshua Tree, but didn't make the
final cut. The b-sides for the singles were live tracks recorded
in 1981 in Boston, and 1983 in Denver. Songs from the 1981
Boston show appeared on the Gloria
single, and the Fire single
and the Dancin' Master compilation. Songs from the 1983
Red Rocks show made up part of the Under
a Blood Red Sky live album.
The Sweetest Thing single was the first
single since the early 80s not commercially released in the
United States.
